CIENNA (cgoodsky) | 6 comments The book I'm looking for is set in a fantasy world. The main character is a human(or at least humanoid) dude, who has a dragon for a dad. His dad sleeps a lot, and I think the main character says that a year for him is like a second for his dad.
The main character will eventually turn into a full dragon, and he hasn't yet gotten his first scales yet. The progression of his transformation was either based on his age, or on what accomplishments he had.

At one point he gets trapped in this arena of sorts, and there are orcs/ogres? He fights his way out but I think he ends up killing a few innocent people as well.

At the end of the book he gets scales, which are on his arm I think. The color of the scales was determined by his actions and/or morals, and since he killed a few innocent people, his scales were black(which was bad).
Then his dragon dad gets angry/disappointed/disgusted at the color of his scales and sends the main character away or something, so he can try and change the color of them.

I remember the cover had like a dark red rim with some sort of pattern. This was also the first book of a series.
I read it around 2016-2019.
