R13: SS Team 13 - 13 Going To 1st

Book Read: Executive Power by Vince Flynn
Date Read: 02/15/22
How it Fits: This book is number 6 in the Mitch Rapp series
Rating: *****
Pages: 512
Location: Southeast Asia
Review: There is so much going on in this book, that it is hard to reduce all the action into one paragraph. Early on we learn that an American family has been kidnapped in one of the Philippine Islands. Attempts are made to negotiate a rescue, and the military plans a rescue. However, when a Navy Seal team is ambushed, all evidence points to a leak in the State Dept. At the same time, in the Middle East, a ruthless assassin, funded by powerful oil money, is seeking to foment a world war.
The thread of this book produces an excellent expose on the type of enemy we are fighting, the modern day manner of that fight, and how political correctness can not only torpedo the effort, but result in inexplicable havoc for this country.

Wasn't sure whether to call it week 4 or week 3.

Sending out a quick reminder that Thursday is coming up fast. We just need two more reviews to roll on Friday. Go team!!!

Go team!!!

XOXO

Accidently meeting in America to romance in South Korea. Jenna meet Jaewoo one day while he was in America and they had fun while it lasted but they promise to stay in touch. Time passed and Jenna end up in South Korea to be with her grandmother who is sick and studying. Where she go to the same school as Jaewoo and they started to have a secret friendship. Why? It's because Jewoo is part of the K-Pop group and he doesn't want to have scandal. It's pretty sweet and we are following how teen idols are having a difficult time having a proper normal life. It's like forbidden romance and something what all fans of k pop dream to date and idol.

I hate when that happens! I have problems with other stuff on the site and it's frustrating. Thanks for reposting the review; I've added it to the list!

Jammin Jenny again? *sigh*
Well, that means it's a bit of a good news/bad news situation - specifically, good news for the team, bad news for Jenny.
Since this is the second time she's missed the deadline, I have to disqualify her. This means you'll continue as a 5-player team (since I don't currently have any back-up players available), and as all remaining players had their reviews posted in time, you can go ahead and roll for this week.
I'll let Jenny know.

Bouchra - The Sign of the Four review 4*
Darkness - Mia review 4*
Jeanne - An Antique Murder review 2*
Delitealex - Mother Load review 4*
Current bonus point count: 3

Meg, I was just checking the bonus points and I think we should've earned one for Darkness' book which has a Romance genre? I believe there's a bonus point for reading Romance for the 02/11 roll...
I'm going to be reading The Sign of Four, #2 in the Sherlock Holmes series. I'm still double-checking the correct edition that corresponds to the one I have as an ebook :)

Post your edition as soon as you've found it and I'll add it to the list.

We earned that bonus point in round 1 when Bouchra read a series book #3 that had a red cover, which was the alternate #3. That was a good find, though!

Okay. I think them mb I will go for The Legacy.

Alright, Jeanne, kudos for wanting to try it. I didn't understand it, either, so let me go over to the discussion thread and ask.
Edited to add: I've posted the question!

Thanks, Darkness, I'll add it to our list.

Her Royal Highness by Rachel Hawkins
Date Read: 2/20/22
How It Fits: #2 in the Royals series
Pages: 274
Rating: ★★
Review: Where was the plot? It starts with Millie getting a scholarship to a school in Scotland after getting her heartbroken but then she gets there and literally not a damn thing happens.
The romance between her and Flora fell completely flat for me because one) Flora is awful and one dimensional and two) there was just no believable chemistry between them. The ending was rushed and there’s just something about royal romances that I don’t really enjoy so this book completely missed the mark for me. It’s way too short and feels empty and shallow.

Meg wrote: "Great! Will she starting right away? That is, with this round?"
That's the plan. :)
Unless you'd prefer to hold off until the next roll, Alex?

Reviews are due Friday before 11:59PM Central Time, though the goal is have them in by Thursday night. It's less nerve-wracking that way for the team!

We're posting ahead of time what we plan to read so I can keep a running list. Keeps things sane.

You've got me thinking of tackling the read-a-series-from-the-start bonus. If our next roll has a one (1) that could be the sign to try.

Review:
Violet and Grandma Daisy are busy running their magical bookshop as well as preparing for a Poe-try reading day as part of the town festival (Poe-try as in Edgar Alan Poe). The murder of an unlikable member of their writing club has the authorities pointing the finger at an unassuming business owner who happens to be a friend of Violet's. This fact, along with nudging from Poe's stories and the store's pets, has Violet investigating and digging for other suspects.
The author tells an easy-going, good mystery in a lovely setting. The thing that gets on my nerves and pulls me out of the story is the constant repetition of store names and factoids. For example, we know the bookshop's name from the start, yet it constantly gets repeated. Ditto with her friends' shops, like the creperie and dress store. However, I love the pets, and love how books are magically matched with customers. Also love Sheriff Rainwater, a calm, steady leader and human being.
I'm giving this 4 stars, rounded from 3.5, for the story and the fun magical elements.
