Review: It's been almost 5 years since I read book 5, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Elena is the world's only female werewolf and she's pregnant. She and members of her pack are asked to steal Jack the Ripper's "From Hell" letter from a sorcerer's collection. When they do, they somehow open a portal that releases zombies and other folks from Victorian England. They also release zombie rats that carry a deadly strain of cholera into Toronto. I liked the time travel aspect and the historical references. I really liked the vampire, Zoe, and I hope she shows up in future books in the series. The book was fast-paced which is what I enjoy when I'm on a reading deadline.

Review

This is the 3rd in The Ivy Years series and like the rest of the series, although a hockey romance, the focus is on the romance rather than the hockey, We follow Graham and Harkness' new hockey player Rikker as they struggle with their deveoping relationship as they overcome their own fear and the fear of others. A good novel that can be read as part of the series or as a standalone.

Book: The King of Koraha
Author: Maria V. Snyder
Pages: 522
How it fits: #3 in the Archives of the Invisible Sword
Date read: 17/2/22
Rating: 4,5 stars

Review: I was curious about where this book was going to go after the conflict was resolved in the second book. In this book Shyla is travelling to meet the king of Koraha. She is asked to find out who stole the tax money. At this point the story turns into a detective story in a magical setting. Because of the nature of the investigation Shyla travels to other cities of Koraha and we get to see more of the interesting world that Maria V. Snyder created. What I always enjoy about this author's books are the characters and the dynamics between them. I also ejoy the fact that the story doesn't alway go the expected way, there are many twists and turns. In that respect this book does not dissapoint. The new characters are intriguing and it twisted to many different directions before we got to an explosive conclusion.

Heart of a Warrior by Johanna Lindsey (#3 in the Ly-San-Ter Family)
How it fits: #3 in Ly-San-Ter series
Date Read: 2/17/22
Rating: 4 stars

Review: Johanna Lindsey was one of the first romance authors I read and her books captured me right from the start. This series is different from what I have read of her books so far. I have mostly read historical romance, this one is more Sci-Fi Romance which was very different to read from her. This series takes the role of the male being the dominant one and the women are very independent and don't like to be controlled, that made for an interesting story line.

Review
I have to admit I'm thoroughly enjoying this series, although a hockey romance there is very little hockey and is more focused on the couple. Rafe and Bella are a sweet couple, who have a role reversal to the typical romance trope. There are some heavy issues dealt with during their story which was handled sensitively as they grew closer. Can't wait to read the next in the series.

I love this series! It gets silly sometimes, but it is a fun read. I've reread it multiple times and it continues to keep my attention and tickle my funny bone. Each reread is better than the last, I think.

Book: Fugitives
Author: Alexander Gordon Smith
Pages: 320
Read: 24/02/22
How it fits: #4 in the furnace series
Rating: 3,5 stars

Review: This series is a very good young adult series. I love the main characters. They are people that are stuck in a horrible situation and made to make horrible choices. In this book the gang has finally managed to escape from furnace penetantiary, but so have all the others (dangarous criminals, monsters). Because of this the whole city is in lockdown and the police is patrolling the streets looking for the fugitives. I like the direction it is going on. I can't believe there is only one book left in the series.

Prodigy
2nd in series
Read 2/25/2022
★★★★

Review: It's so weird to read dystopias these days. So many aspects of this novel could apply to our current day, with a deadly plague and huge class divides. While the 1st installment focused on the Republic, here we get a glimpse of the Colonies. Day believes the Colonies are a utopia but instead he finds a land of corporate greed and the exploitation of the lower class. Sound familiar? The book hints at not one but two love triangles, and the ending made me sad. Hope things look up in the last installment!

Review: I read the first book in this series in 2014 so I had a little trouble remembering this family. Johanna Lindsey books are almost always about a family and the romance, which I love. I love that this one is in the Texas and the west. This is the story of Casey Straton, the child from the first book romance. She leaves her family home in Texas to show her parents she can do more then women's work. She meets Damian Rutledge III. That is when things get interesting. This is the last book in this series.

Atlas of the Heart: Mapping Meaningful Connection and the Language of Human Experience
Read 3/1/22
★★★

Review: I have read several of Brene Brown's books and I enjoy listening to her podcasts, so of course I had to grab this new book. A researcher by trade, she names and defines 87 different emotions and discusses how similar emotions often get confused with each other. She also talks about why the emotions come up and offers ways to understand them so we can better manage them and ultimately connect with others. She gives advice on what to do when we are overwhelmed by an emotion (i.e., when someone is giving you bad feedback and you're feeling an onslaught of uncomfortable feelings, stop the conversation and ask for a minute to get some water or walk outside, then meet back up and start over.) The problem with this for me is that I doubt I would remember her advice if I find myslef in that situation. On the other hand, maybe that's the point. It's good to recognize that practicing these actions will ultimately help our personal development.
