Hi guys,

Let's do an MLK-inspired readathon starting this Friday, 1/14. For anyone who unfortunately doesn't get 1/17 off, let's keep this readathon open throughout the week.

If you want a bit of a reading prompt, here are a few ideas that might guide you in your book selection.

(1) read a book that challenges you
(2) read a book by or about or involving a social activist
(3) read or listen to an important speech

Any other prompt ideas are welcome, just leave them in the comments. And of course, you do not have to fulfill a prompt to participate.

Cheers,
your moderators

Charleen (charleenlynette) | 1688 comments I'm in. Not sure I'll be able to fit in a prompt, though I did just finish Uncomfortable Conversations With a Black Man and would highly recommend it.

Icy-Cobwebs-In-Space (readingreindeerproximacentauri) | 325 comments I'll be doing two other Readathons Jan. 14-16 plus finishing another ending January 15.

A book that challenges? Sounds good.
Hopefully The 1619 Project: A New Origin Story will be in via Library e-. Also going with The Nickel Boys. 1-challenging, 2--surely involves activism of some kind.

That's a great book choice.

Icy-Cobwebs-In-Space (readingreindeerproximacentauri) | 325 comments MLK's birthday is Jan. 17. Robert E. Lee's is Jan. 19 (still celebrated in Alabama). I think a book on Slavery or Civil Rights would be appropriate for the Challenge prompt..example, The 1619 Project: A New Origin Story

Charleen (charleenlynette) | 1688 comments Currently reading:

Dreamcatcher by Stephen King p116 (19%)
The Office of Historical Corrections by Danielle Evans p163 (61%)

That last 40% of The Office of Historical Corrections is the title novella. It was preceded by a handful of short stories, all of which I enjoyed, and I'm hoping I'll be able to sit down tomorrow and get the entire thing read in one day. In one sitting would be better, but something* tells me I won't have that much uninterrupted time.

(*Two very energetic somethings someones.)

I'm hoping to finish both of these over the next week (the King might be a stretch), plus I'll get an audiobook going.

A book that I love recommending is Kindred by Octavia Butler. There is a recent graphic novel adaptation that is amazing! Sorry, the app on my cell doesn't let me link anything.

Kindred by Octavia E. Butler
Kindred A Graphic Novel Adaptation by Damian Duffy

Both are great. I prefer the original but possibly that's because I read it first.

Friday I completely listened to The Cousins by Karen M. McManus . My favorite McManus novel so far but I do have a couple more to read, I think. At the very least her newest one.
I read Princess Princess Ever After by Kay O'Neill and then The Tea Dragon Society (Tea Dragon, #1) by Kay O'Neill The Tea Dragon Festival (Tea Dragon, #2) by Kay O'Neill The Tea Dragon Tapestry (Tea Dragon, #3) by Kay O'Neill and they were all just adorable AF.
I finished both The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab Vicious (Villains, #1) by V.E. Schwab yesterday.
Haven't gotten much read in We Hunt the Flame (Sands of Arawiya, #1) by Hafsah Faizal though I am liking it.
I started to read both Crossbones by Kimberly Vale The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele Richardson today.

I started listening to Cultish The Language of Fanaticism by Amanda Montell while shelving authors A-F in my library yesterday and today and bought a magazine/brochure rack hoping it will work to display my graphic novels in my library. lol. The room is slowly coming together but my additional bookcases won't be here till mid-March. I ordered them in October. Blah.
Hoping to read March Book One (March, #1) by John Lewis March Book Two (March, #2) by John Lewis March Book Three (March, #3) by John Lewis today and finish reading The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele Richardson as I am about 80% through.
But back to Cultish while I work for a smidge. I did not have today off but I took it off and then the weather was really bad this morning so I'm glad I had previously taken it off! I'm now about halfway through Cultish.

I got half way through listening to Up to No Gouda (Grilled Cheese Mysteries, #1) by Linda Reilly yesterday and I read March Book Two (March, #2) by John Lewis .
Got a headache after work and went to bed fairly early so I didn't read March Book Three (March, #3) by John Lewis or any of We Hunt the Flame (Sands of Arawiya, #1) by Hafsah Faizal . I'd like to finish those by Friday. I am reading the paperback of Flame but also nabbed it on KU so I can read more. But I should really finish Crossbones by Kimberly Vale first!

message 36: by Shelby (new)

Shelby Suderman | 2180 comments I managed to make some progress in I Am Legend by Richard Matheson yesterday as well. I got the audiobook for The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab as well, so planning to power through that in the coming days.

I may actually finish Dreamcatcher by Friday. I also picked up a poetry collection from the library today... perhaps not quite in the spirit of the "book that challenges you" prompt, but it definitely will, regardless of the content.
