YA read sometime between 2015-2020. I only clearly remember the ending, but may have girl is supposed to marry wealthy “prince” but falls for the “ chef”/“baker”/household staff. Spoiler ahead.

What I remember about the book is the ending. Main character marries the “baker” and directly after the wedding they are attacked and the groom (and I think most of his family) is killed. She I believe was talking to his mother, who also survives the attack. I always wanted to see if there was a sequel to find out if there was a sequel.

It seems possible this is “The Betrothed” by Kiera Cass. In it Lady Hollis Brite is courted by the king and it’s assumed she’ll marry him, but a family of commoners moves into the castle, and she falls for the blacksmith son. (Spoilers!) They run away together and get married, then directly after the party is attacked by some assassin group, and it’s at least implied that the main character’s new husband is dead. His mother does survive, and the main character ends up traveling with them back to their country.
