I finished my binge of Alice Sabo books.

Currently reading a free short story in the Tolari Space universe. Standalone, and I think it’s an appetizer for an upcoming novel. Name is Food Fight. Author is Christie Meierz. It doesn’t show up searching Goodreads yet. Other Tolari Space books include The Marann and Farryn's War.

Next in my TBR is Empire at Gloran by Blaze Ward.

Food Fight by Christie Meierz was interesting. It’s been a long time since I reread Farryn's War but the new story triggered enough memories that I could tell it takes place after Farryn’s War. The upcoming book is due out in January but isn’t available for preorders yet. Odds are good that I’ll reread starting with The Marann in December so that I’m ready when the new book comes out.

Currently reading Empire at Gloran by Blaze Ward. It’s not grabbing me yet, but it’s not unusual for this author’s books to take until halfway before the action starts. Some of his series I simply lose interest in completely, but I’m hoping this doesn’t turn out to be one of those.

Empire at Gloran finally got to the action. I finished it last night. Gave it 3 stars. Will likely buy the next in the series.

Now wading through free previews in hopes of finding something more interesting than books I started but haven’t finished yet. The next book in the Bob’s Saucer Repair series should be out reasonably soon - that’s always a treat for me.

C. John Kerry (cjkerry) | 621 comments Was at the local Rotary Club's semi-annual book sale this week. It is held in April and October. As always I checked out the Sci-Fi books and was a bit surpised. Lots of early books (sixties and seventies). Picked up a few things, including a couple of books from Ace back when their books were a wee bit shorter than the other publishers. Some fantasy in their and not sure anything is specifically space opera. I am wondering if someone got rid of a personal library for one reason or another. Only other book I got was on the Toronto Blue Jays.

message 156: by Teresa, Plan B is in Effect (new)

Teresa Carrigan | 3643 comments Mod
Often personal collections get donated to libraries for one of these reasons: owner died, owner is moving and has to downsize, divorce, or quite commonly these days old eyes can’t handle small print and owner just uses ebooks now.

message 157: by C. John (new)

C. John Kerry (cjkerry) | 621 comments Didn’t think of that last one. Having moved myself I can understand that one. I am currently cataloguing my entertainment library(s) on another site and if I still had everything I got rid of before I moved I hate to think of the amount of work that would be required.

Currently reading Foundation. Of course I read it previously, probably two or three times, but it's been a long time. I don't remember much of the detail. I've just started it and was struck with the quality of the writing. Asimov was good. Even after 70 years.

May not really be space opera, but the opening chapter is on a space ship. 😉

Have you watched the show on Apple? It’s really good, and departs from the books significantly enough to keep it interesting.

Well I had been rereading a fantasy book and planning to binge the rest of its story arc, but I just noticed the new book by Jerry Boyd is out, so I’m switching to that. Title is Slow-Mo. No clue what it’s about other than Bob’s Saucer Repair.

message 163: by C. John (new)

C. John Kerry (cjkerry) | 621 comments Not reading and not a book but I listened to the album Perry Rhodan Pax Terra, which is based on the Perry Rhodan science fiction series. The composer is Christopher Franke who is best known over here as the composer of the music for the Babylon 5 television series.

Slow-Mo by Jerry Boyd was fun. The POV stayed with Bob for the entire book. I’ve been rereading part of a lengthy fantasy series, not sure whether I’ll stop after the one I’m rereading now or the next one.

SF that I’m planning to (re)read in November:
Portal by Eric Flint for the group read
Skyspark by Ryk E. Spoor for the limited pick.
Domain at Yaumgan by Blaze Ward, due out Nov 10th
From Every Storm by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller, due out Nov 23rd. This is a chapbook containing three short stories.

I finished rereading Portal by Eric Flint and Ryk Spoor last night. I enjoyed it very much but left my rating as 3 stars because I need to wait until my memory fades or too much of the action is spoiled. This is our current Reader Pick.

Now I’m rereading Skyspark by Ryk E. Spoor for this month’s Limited Pick. This is free to read on Baen website, and available in a free ebook anthology too. I put details on the discussion thread. It’s always interesting having a point of view character that is an alien who isn’t just a human in a costume.

Teresa Carrigan | 3643 comments Mod
Finished rereading Skyspark. Now I’m reading a new book: Domain at Yaumgan by Blaze Ward. This is likely to be the final book of this story arc.

message 169: by Teresa, Plan B is in Effect (new)

Teresa Carrigan | 3643 comments Mod
Domain at Yaumgan was good and it wrapped up the story arc nicely, while leaving possibilities for other story arcs to follow.

Now I’m in search of something else to read. What are YOU reading? Or nominate a book for the December group reads. I need ideas.

Sweep of the Blade (Innkeeper Chronicles, #4) by Ilona Andrews Sweep of the Blade is the only one that could be considered Space Opera but even it is mostly planetary.

Trike | 777 comments Hoopla is having its thrice-yearly free reads, and this month it includes the novel Lethal Cargo by Felix R. Savage and comic book Star Wars: Bounty Hunters vol. 1: Galaxy's Deadliest, both of which are Space Opera.

Check to see if your library offers the Hoopla app. Works great, especially for comics. Your tax dollars pay for it, might as well use it.

I’ve been rereading fantasy while waiting for something new that grabs my attention. In about a week a preordered book will arrive: From Every Storm by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller, due out Nov 23rd. This is a chapbook containing three short stories in the Liaden Universe.

Rosenblue(promoting non-biased,honest reviews & a dislike button on GR) | 7 comments I'm re-reading the Harry Potter and Angel Sanctuary series.
For Harry Potter I'm currently reading book four of 7 and for Angel Sanctuary book 6 of 20.

Teresa Carrigan | 3643 comments Mod
Read From Every Storm by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller. First story is set right after the ancient war against the machine intelligences. Second is set around the time when Korval was exiled from Liad but is about a minor character from a previous book, one who had interacted with both Er Thom and Shan before, from a culture that was extremely matriarchal.

The third story was the only one I’d read previously. It was posted on Baen website a year or two ago. This is one I’ll likely reread after each time I reread Mouse and Dragon. It shows what happened to Sinit and her clan after the events of Mouse and Dragon.

Now I’m rereading Into Tolari Space by Christie Meierz which I think is a free ebook for the rest of November. This contains two stories that are prequels to The Marann which is our December group read. Backstory type stories. One is sort of a first contact story. These stories aren’t needed to enjoy the rest of the series, but since I’m planning to binge the whole series I’m starting with the chronologically first.

I know I said I’d binge reread the series for The Marann by Christie Meierz. I didn’t expect to gallop through it.
Finished rereading:
Into Tolari Space
The Marann
Daughters of Suralia

Currently rereading:
The Fall

Next in line is a new story arc in the same universe:
Farryn's War

Then in January, the new sequel to Farryn’s War.

I finished all the books in the Tolari Universe a while back. Read Legacy by Bob Mauldin which is our Limited Pick. Currently rereading the sequel to Legacy: Spheres of Influence but am likely to get distracted by other books if something interesting shows up, such as a new book in the series that starts with Bob's Saucer Repair by Jerry Boyd or one of the fantasy books I’m expecting to drop this month.

message 181: by Lizzie (new)

Lizzie | 303 comments Jucha's latest Gate Ghosts was very good. He keeps increasing my expectations of him as he continues to write the series. Alien Intrigue (Gate Ghosts #6) by S.H. Jucha .

I am on book 6 of Chaney's Starcaster series and enjoying it. Sci-fi with magic or if you read a lot of old sci-fi - with ESPer powers beyond what I ever imagined at age 12. The characters and story are well done. Cry Victory (Starcaster #6) by J.N. Chaney

Finished Spheres of Influence, now about halfway done rereading #3 Far Horizons. I’ll likely reread #4 as well if I don’t get distracted by a new book. Besides several fantasy books due out in the next few weeks, I’m looking forward to these SF books coming out:
Bob and Nikki #30 (it’s been about 6 weeks since #29 so should drop soon)
Doctor Galaxy by Jenny Schwartz, due out Dec 18th
Rembrandt’s Station by Christie Meierz due out Jan 5th

Finished rereading When One Door Closes, which finishes off that series. Into the West by Mercedes Lackey was good but I think I liked the previous book better, and it’s clear there will be at least one more book in this story arc.

Just noticed the latest Bob and Nikki book is out. Title is Mr Wilson’s Neighborhood. It’s #30 but doesn’t seem to be searchable on Goodreads quite yet. Author Jerry Boyd.

Update: it’s now searchable!
Mr. Wilson's Neighborhood

Teresa Carrigan | 3643 comments Mod
Mr. Wilson's Neighborhood by Jerry Boyd was enjoyable. If you liked the first 29 books odds are good you will like this one. The action is mostly low key or social/mental in this book.

Now I’m reading another new book: Doctor Galaxy: A Science Fiction Romantic Comedy by Jenny Schwartz. This starts a new series, from the same author who wrote Space Deputy which we had as a group read a few years ago. I expect it to be light and humorous.

I got about 40% into Doctor Galaxy but it isn’t holding my attention. This might be a problem with me rather than the book, because two new fantasy books aren’t holding my attention either.

So what are YOU reading that’s good?

I managed to finish the two new fantasy books but not having any luck with Doctor Galaxy. So now I’m rereading Quarter Share by Nathan Lowell for the umpteenth time.

message 191: by Trike (new)

Trike | 777 comments Just read Once Upon A Galactic Time hoping for some Space Opera fun but instead got a yee-haw MilSF that was pretty much a Mary Sue exercise.

As I said in my review, I guess it’s progress that we can have dumb female power fantasies to stand next to all the dumb male power fantasies, but I don’t care for either flavor. Especially when it could’ve been so easily avoided.

Finished Full Share. Found out that one of my favorite fantasy authors has entire series written under a pseudonym that I’d never seen before, so I’ll be immersed in fantasy for a while.

In January I have Rembrandt’s Station preordered. That’s the sequel to Farryn's War by Christie Meierz.
