Audrey | 515 comments I am currently reading A Liaden Universe Constellation: Volume 5 by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller. I have read some of the short stories before (but fun reading them again!) while others are new to me.

I’m still reading fantasy. Found two new series that were good, and now I’m rereading a duology. I’m trying to wait until August to reread Ship's Boy by Phil Geusz for the August Limited Pick. The next book in the Bob and Nikki series should appear in August (going by average time between books in that series). I have preordered The Rosetta Mind: Book Two of the Rosetta Series by Clair McCague which is due out in late August - it’s SF but unlikely to be space opera, first book was all on Earth I think. It does have aliens, and the main character is definitely not neurotypical.

New Bob and Nikki book just dropped: Trifecta by Jerry Boyd. I’m going to attempt to finish the fantasy I’m currently rereading before starting it. Then after Trifecta I’ll reread Ship's Boy for the August Limited Pick.

message 104: by Audrey (new)

Audrey | 515 comments I finished Ship's Boy by Phil Geusz for the August Limited group read. I started Midshipman, the next in the series, since I managed to get it free at the same time I got Ship's Boy. It picks up shortly after Ship's Boy ends.

I’m about 80% through Trifecta by Jerry Boyd. This book is different from the rest of the series. Instead of a short novel all from the POV of Bob, this volume is a set of three novellas with only one from Bob’s POV. Second story is about Joshua, and third Dingus. The three stories take place at about the same time in different parts of the galaxy.

Debrac2014 | 71 comments Thanks to Ally for mentioning The Rivers of London series! I'm enjoying them! I've also read Fault Tolerance by Valeries Valdes and Eclipse the Moon by Jessie Mahalik!

Finished Trifecta. It didn’t seem quite as much fun as the books that just stick to Bob’s storyline. Reread Ship's Boy and Midshipman by Phil Geusz. Now I’m sucked into a new-to-me fantasy series.

Great fantasy series. Not finding anything else new that holds my attention. Just started rereading The Rosetta Man by Claire McCague which appears to be available as a free ebook right now, likely because of the sequel coming out in a couple of weeks. SF but not really space opera. First contact type story, with a key character being neurodivergent in the extreme. This will be the third time I’ve read it.

Ooh, loved The Rosetta Man. Thanks for the heads up about the sequel. And so the TBR grows….

Rosetta Man was good. I was surprised at how much of the details I’d forgotten. After that nothing new was holding my attention so now I’m rereading Fair Trade: An Alien Invasion Story by Mackey Chandler and enjoying it very much even though I still remember a lot of the details. Fair Trade is an unusual first contact story.

message 111: by Teresa, Plan B is in Effect (new)

Teresa Carrigan | 3643 comments Mod
After Fair Trade I reread several fantasy books. I have some preordered books that will arrive later this month and more in September. In the meantime none of the free previews or free ebooks I’ve tried have grabbed me, so now I’m rereading The Silver Ships by S.H. Jucha.

message 112: by Ally (new)

Ally | 99 comments Did not finish Nexus yet ... sorry I fall back in the Lit RPG rabbit hole. It's addictive.
If you like Fantasy you may be interested, there are a lot on KU. Try The Path of Ascension by C. Mantis The Path of Ascension or He who fight with monsters He Who Fights with Monsters (He Who Fights with Monsters, #1) by Shirtaloon or The Primal Hunter The Primal Hunter (The Primal Hunter #1) by Zogarth or Beneath the Dragoneye Moons Book 1 by Selkie Myth Beneath the Dragoneye Moon or The Wandering Inn Book 1 (The Wandering Inn #1) by Pirateaba The Wandering Inn
A more military approach : The Two Week Curse (Ten Realms, #1) by Michael Chatfield The Ten Realms

message 113: by Shawnie (new)

Shawnie | 24 comments I'm seeing a lot of buzz over The Wandering Inn: Book 1 but I wonder if it's worth the time commitment. Did you love it?

I’m about halfway through rereading the third book of the Silver Ships series by S.H. Jucha. I’m planning to finish #3 then switch to the sequel to The Rosetta Man by Claire McCague which just came out today. Title is The Rosetta Mind: Book Two of the Rosetta Series.

message 115: by Teresa, Plan B is in Effect (new)

Teresa Carrigan | 3643 comments Mod
About halfway through The Rosetta Mind: Book Two of the Rosetta Series. It isn’t as much of a page turner as the first book. Yes there is action but it seems more like snippets of it rather than a roller coaster. Still not what I’d call space opera, and so far in this book all the story is set in one small area of Canada.

message 116: by Teresa, Plan B is in Effect (new)

Teresa Carrigan | 3643 comments Mod
Finished Rosetta Mind. It definitely did not meet my expectations, but it was readable. It’s clearly crying out for a third book in the series.

Nothing in my pile of new free stuff kept my attention and it isn’t September yet so I decided to continue rereading the Silver Ships series. Currently on #4 Haraken.

message 117: by Ally (new)

Ally | 99 comments I liked The Wandering Inn. But I read books 1 to 3 and quit after. The author is prolific. The story is slow paced but good characters. Not very LitRPG (no character sheets with numbers to minmax...). Just a Fantasy story with a tiny bit of a System.

Finished rereading Silver Ships #4 and #5. Starting my reread of Boundary by Eric Flint for the September group read.

message 120: by Teresa, Plan B is in Effect (new)

Teresa Carrigan | 3643 comments Mod
Boundary was quite enjoyable. I finished it yesterday, and nominated the sequel for the October group read.

Didn’t find anything interesting in my accumulated pile of free stuff, and want to wait on the sequel in case it ends up being the October Reader Pick, so I’m back rereading Silver Ships series. Currently on #6.5 (why the .5?) Allora.

Probably because it's a novella. Only 137 pages. Not considered a "primary work".

Mackey Chandler published April #13 last night! Title is Let Us Tell You Again. He posted a while back saying that he thinks there might be one more book to April series to finish bridging to the Family Law series.

message 124: by Teresa, Plan B is in Effect (new)

Teresa Carrigan | 3643 comments Mod
I thoroughly enjoyed Let Us Tell You Again. Now stuck in a severe book hangover. In the next six weeks I’m expecting three preordered books and a book whose author never does preorders. The expected books are:
Next Bob & Nikki book by Jerry Boyd (#28)
Empire at Gloran by Blaze Ward
Humorous nonfiction
Fantasy

message 125: by Teresa, Plan B is in Effect (new)

Teresa Carrigan | 3643 comments Mod
Still waiting on those expected books. In the meantime I’m rereading Common Ground and Other Stories by Mackey Chandler. First story is a first contact type, where an alien spacecraft just shows up near the International space station and starts trying to communicate with the astronauts.

message 126: by Teresa, Plan B is in Effect (new)

Teresa Carrigan | 3643 comments Mod
Finished Common Ground. Title story is very good, a couple of the other stories are worth rereading.

Started rereading the current last book of the fantasy series whose next book is coming out on Friday. Enjoying it but the new Bob and Nikki book finally appeared. Title is The Boatmen by Jerry Boyd. This is the series that starts with Bob's Saucer Repair, so I’ll probably switch to that now then after finishing it go back to rereading Death Over the Garden Wall by Honor Raconteur.

If my memory serves me correctly raconteur is more or less the French for storyteller. Seems like a good name for an author.

message 128: by Teresa, Plan B is in Effect (new)

Teresa Carrigan | 3643 comments Mod
No clue whether Raconteur is a pseudonym but she is indeed a very engaging author, for most of her series. Most of them are YA fantasy.

The Boatmen by Jerry Boyd was great. First half of it follows Dingus, off investigating the origin of the sleeper ship. Second half follows Bob who has returned from rescuing Zelda. I’m looking forward to more about the Boatmen.

The new book This Potion is da Bomb by Honor Raconteur was excellent. Likely confusing to readers who haven’t read at least some of the previous books of the series but the previous books are also very good.

Now I’m digging through my pile of accumulated free previews and deferring starting What If? 2: Additional Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions by Randall Munroe which arrived during the week. I enjoy his books but usually just read one chapter at a time spread over a few weeks. Humorous nonfiction that scratches my itch for math and physics when needed.

message 129: by Lizzie (new)

Lizzie | 303 comments Finished the last book in A.K. Duboff's Cadicle series. Empire United is book 4 of The Taran Empire Saga. Empire Defied (Taran Empire Saga #3) by A.K. DuBoff

Now reading A.G. Riddle's latest, Lost in Time. Lost in Time by A.G. Riddle

Nothing in my pile of free previews held my attention. Read a bit of What If? 2 (making it last), and have been rereading Dragonsong by Anne McCaffrey. Likely will reread Dragonsinger too, but I don’t reread Dragondrums as often.

just finished vol 3 in the series - Record of a Spaceborn Few - not my fave. took a long time to get to the point of this character driven story. very different from the first 2 books.

(all which can be read by themselves as standalones , IMO.)

Kay Dee (what is your storygraph name? mine is in my bio. join me!) Meadows (kdf_333) | 52 comments also just finished the graphic novels The Old Guard by Greg Rucka.
i read the books after watching the netflix movie with Charlize Theron. netflix changed some of the actions but most of the dialogue was almost word for word from the comic.

they are nothing like her Kushiel series. They are more like Kim Harrison books.

Pern books, especially the ones early in the series that focus on the harpers, are such comfort rereads. hmmm might add them to my list.

Finished rereading Masterharper of Pern. Tried a bunch of free previews and bought two. Got bored halfway through the fantasy one. Currently reading Legend Rising by Jonathan Yanez which seems to be space opera. I’ll let you know whether I find it worth reading, if I manage to finish it.

Also still reading What If? 2: Additional Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions, a chapter or two a day, trying to make it last. Upcoming I’ll be rereading Threshold for the October Reader Pick.

message 140: by Audrey (new)

Audrey | 515 comments I am getting near the end of A New Clan: A Star Kingdom Novel by David Weber. Not bad but there were some really goofy errors an editor should have picked up on (for example, humus as a snack is fine for an earthworm, but not so much for humans; hummus on the other hand would be edible).

Next up is Threshold by Eric Flint for the October Reader group read.

Losing interest in Legend Rising. Read a new fantasy book that I did like, third in a series. I’ve decided it’s close enough to October to start rereading Threshold.

Finished rereading Threshold by Eric Flint and Ryk Spoor. I still recall enough of the plot of the third book that I’m holding off on rereading it just yet. Rereading a fantasy trilogy now. Later this month I have a preordered space opera book due, by Blaze Ward.

Still reading fantasy. On the 10th my preordered space opera will arrive: Empire at Gloran by Blaze Ward. This is book 5 of a series that I have been enjoying. Book 6 is up for preorder too, due out in November.

message 146: by Sydney (new)

I’m almost halfway through A Changed World Box Set: The Complete 5 Book Series by Alice Sabo. It’s SF but not space opera, and was on sale so I got it because I really liked her fantasy Tales of Haroon Books 1-3 series (all 5). It didn’t sound like the type of book I would enjoy but it sucked me in. I care about the characters and the way they are trying to survive.

Edit: it’s still on sale for $1.99 on Amazon.
