Now starting CASE HISTORIES by Kate Atkinson, the first book in her Jackson Brodie series. This one didn't win any major awards, but Stephen King said it was one of the best mystery novels of the decade. We will see if that assessment holds up.
Beat the Devils
by Josh WeissIn this alternative history novel, commie-buster, anti-Semitic Joseph McCarthy is U.S. President and there's a nefarious plot afoot that involves a Jewish LAPD detective.
Interesting noir novel. 3 stars

I love Kate Atkinson, and that series is one of my favourites. Enjoy it, James!!
Ashley Audrain's psychological thriller, The Push, caused a lot of stir and I wondered why. I knew there was a worn-out mother with young children, but I expected something more.

The Old Silent
by Martha GrimesRichard Jury #10, OK to read as a standalone. I'm reading the series in order and this one is very different from most. Much less humor than usual, meaning less of Plant's goofy pub friends. Serious portrait of a tired overworked but brilliant detective following up a complex case that he's emotionally involved in. Highly recommended.
Making Movies by Sidney Lumet. If you love movies, this is a must read. 4/5https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I used to read Richard Jury novels some 20+ years ago. I liked them.
Two books:
Tomb of Sand by Geetanjali Shree (a mammoth tome if ever there was one) and
Death on the Nile by Agatha Christie. I've now seen three different versions of adaptations, and I can't help but think how well Christie set up the story. Definitely deserves a reread.

A new favourite Aussie thriller for my bookshelf! If you need more than my enthusiasm, Lee Child called Michael Trant's latest novel, Wild Dogs "Tough, fast and hard – my kind of book." It is also a completely authentic, Aussie outback story. I'm with Lee on this one.
5★ My review of Wild Dogs
I read and recommend Wild Prey by Brian Klingborg It is a police procedural set in rural northern China. My 4 star review https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I finished The Other Passenger by Louise Candlish.
A very pleasant surprise! Here's my review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I wasn't feeling so good yesterday, so (my many thanks to Karen who posted this title here) I received my copy of Bone Deep: Untangling the Twisted True Story of the Tragic Betsy Faria Murder Case and spent the day reading it. Where the series introduced more than a bit of levity into the story, this book is more geared toward the facts in the case, the trials, and eventually Pam Hupp's undoing.

OMG what a creepy, manipulative and evil woman!

Yes, creepy is the word. That comes across very well in the book, which to the authors' credit, isn't overly sensationalized.

Hardly a mystery, but I couldn't resist sharing some of the verse and illustrations after enjoying a re-read of Madeline, the much-loved picture book and poem from 1939 by Ludwig Bemelmans. I can't recite all of it anymore, but I'm surprised how much I remember."In an old house in Paris that was covered with vines lived twelve little girls in two straight lines. . ."
5★ My revisit to Paris with Madeline

Chris wrote: "...I have read the first 4 in this series and this one I only gave 2 stars- grittier than I usually care for, but the other 3 I really liked & came to admire the MC."Glad to hear that because I like this one a lot so far. It is gritty, but I don't mind that. There's a philosophical undertone that reminds me a little bit of Ross MacDonald's Lew Archer series.

King has been known to stray into hyperbole when it comes to plugging other authors, but I did really enjoy this book.

Second that. And if you liked The Long Home, his follow up Provinces of Night takes it to a whole new level.
In the next month or so, I'm planning to read his short story collection I Hate to See That Evening Sun Go Down: Collected Stories.

not really a crime/mystery book, per se, but it will interest those who enjoy crime books. WARNING: it's extremely violent.
RJ - Slayer of Trolls wrote: "King has been known to stray into hyperbole when it comes to plugging other authors, but I did really enjoy this book. "A lot of authors do this. I had a friend who was an author and she'd have me read the books that were sent to her to review so she could write a one or two sentence blurb from the notes I made about the book
