PattyMacDotComma | 943 comments I've just read a new debut that's a 20th century story by Aussie author Emily Brugman. A group of Finns migrated to the heat of Western Australia and became seasonal cray fishers on The Islands. First generation is traditional - second is in hotpants at beach BBQs.
The Islands by Emily Brugman 4.5~5★ My review of The Islands

PattyMacDotComma | 943 comments I imagine all readers are aware of who Nelson Mandela is, but for the future generations of children, this is a welcome addition to the Little People BIG DREAMS series by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara. This boy moved from a traditional childhood in an old culture to become a champion for freedom and a world leader.

Araych | 692 comments The Moving Target The Moving Target (Lew Archer #1) by Ross Macdonald by Ross Macdonald

Very highly regarded mystery written in and taking place in 1949 in and around Santa Barbara, California, which Macdonald calls Santa Teresa. Private detective Lew Archer is hired to find a wealthy man who has disappeared and may have been kidnapped. I read a great many of Macdonald's books decades ago and I thought I'd take another look. To my surprise I found the dialogue stilted and unrealistic. Consequently I didn't enjoy the book as much as I thought I would. 3 stars.

Basis for a good 1960s movie, Harper with Paul Newman. I don't mind Macdonald's dialog, though dialog is not his strength as it was for Raymond Chandler. Chandler's dialog probably isn't realistic either, but it's often great fun.

The true story of justice subverted when Russ Faria was accused of killing his wife Betsy Faria. Now a mini-series on Hulu.

The case is covered very thoroughly. 4 stars

Araych | 692 comments Plum Lovin' Plum Lovin' (Stephanie Plum, #12.5) by Janet Evanovich by Janet Evanovich

Stephanie Plum #12.5, OK to read as a standalone. Stephanie becomes a match-maker for Valentines Day. No murders, no criminals, no man-hunting. Very substandard entry in the series. Not recommended.

Araych | 692 comments Don't Eat Me Don't Eat Me (Dr. Siri Paiboun #13) by Colin Cotterill by Colin Cotterill

Dr. Siri #13, OK to read as a standalone. Dr. Sir tries to find the history of a skeleton found at a public monument. I'm a big fan of the Dr. Siri series and I've been reading them in order. This is by far the weakest entry. Almost no mystery -- a great deal of the book is made up of Cotterill's nauseating descriptions about the trade in animals and animal parts. Just because he's right doesn't mean I want to read this disgusting stuff -- page after page. Not recommended.

I love that series and it has some of Tursten's other characters in the books too

I like it a lot although I've only read about 25%. Her prose has such a unique flavor - beautiful of its own accord but then you add in the long tangled run-on sentences, some of which go one for two pages, and the sharply drawn characters and vivid setting.... It's like if Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez directed a Virginia Woolf novel.
