I've just read a new debut that's a 20th century story by Aussie author Emily Brugman. A group of Finns migrated to the heat of Western Australia and became seasonal cray fishers on The Islands. First generation is traditional - second is in hotpants at beach BBQs.
4.5~5★ My review of The Islands
I imagine all readers are aware of who Nelson Mandela is, but for the future generations of children, this is a welcome addition to the Little People BIG DREAMS series by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara. This boy moved from a traditional childhood in an old culture to become a champion for freedom and a world leader.
4.5★ My review of Nelson Mandela
The Moving Target
by Ross MacdonaldVery highly regarded mystery written in and taking place in 1949 in and around Santa Barbara, California, which Macdonald calls Santa Teresa. Private detective Lew Archer is hired to find a wealthy man who has disappeared and may have been kidnapped. I read a great many of Macdonald's books decades ago and I thought I'd take another look. To my surprise I found the dialogue stilted and unrealistic. Consequently I didn't enjoy the book as much as I thought I would. 3 stars.

Basis for a good 1960s movie, Harper with Paul Newman. I don't mind Macdonald's dialog, though dialog is not his strength as it was for Raymond Chandler. Chandler's dialog probably isn't realistic either, but it's often great fun.

Bone Deep: Untangling the Twisted True Story of the Tragic Betsy Faria Murder Case by Charles Bosworth Jr. and Joel SchwartzThe true story of justice subverted when Russ Faria was accused of killing his wife Betsy Faria. Now a mini-series on Hulu.
The case is covered very thoroughly. 4 stars

I just finished listening to How to Kill Your Family
Great for those that like their books dark and twisty. My four star review:

I am an author and sadly get to read too little, so I am excited. I just sent my last manuscript to the editor and ordered new books to read.
End of Days by Brad Taylor
Starless Crown by James Rollins
I just finished The Foundling
Suspenseful historical fiction my five star review:

Plum Lovin'
by Janet EvanovichStephanie Plum #12.5, OK to read as a standalone. Stephanie becomes a match-maker for Valentines Day. No murders, no criminals, no man-hunting. Very substandard entry in the series. Not recommended.
I've just finished Little Rumours by Bryony Pearce
Here is my three star review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Mango, Mambo, and Murder
by Raquel V. ReyesThis is the first book in the Caribbean Kitchen mystery series, featuring a Hispanic sleuth and her circle of friends and relatives.
Good multiethnic cozy mystery with recipes. 3.5 stars

I just finished The Murder of Mr. Wickham and
recommend it to lovers of historical fiction and Agatha Christie style mysteries. My four star review:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Just finished The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle. Currently reading The Maid by Nita Prose (April read for "The Perks of Being a Book Addict" group)
Just about to start Notes on an Execution. I'm doing very little if anything else today other than read. Ahhhh
I finished The Honjin Murders by Seishi Yokomoto. A locked room murder mystery written in 1946.Just started C. J. Box's first Joe Pickett book Open Season. Enjoying it thus far.
Don't Eat Me
by Colin CotterillDr. Siri #13, OK to read as a standalone. Dr. Sir tries to find the history of a skeleton found at a public monument. I'm a big fan of the Dr. Siri series and I've been reading them in order. This is by far the weakest entry. Almost no mystery -- a great deal of the book is made up of Cotterill's nauseating descriptions about the trade in animals and animal parts. Just because he's right doesn't mean I want to read this disgusting stuff -- page after page. Not recommended.
An Elderly Lady Must Not Be Crossed
by Helene TurstenThe further sardonic adventures of 88-year-old Maud, who doesn't shrink at a spot of murder.
Fun sequel to the first book. 3.5 stars

I love that series and it has some of Tursten's other characters in the books too

I like it a lot although I've only read about 25%. Her prose has such a unique flavor - beautiful of its own accord but then you add in the long tangled run-on sentences, some of which go one for two pages, and the sharply drawn characters and vivid setting.... It's like if Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez directed a Virginia Woolf novel.
