Has anyone read any of Salman Rushdie’s novels? I haven’t been drawn to them at all, but I remember the death threats against him when The Satanic Verses was published in 1988.

I haven't, Shirley, but have the Satanic Verses and Midnight's Children on my shelf. I have a friend who absolutely loves him.

Maybe a buddy read is in order, as sounds like a lot of us have been meaning too?

I heard today not only about his eye, but that he was on a ventilator and cannot speak, he had the nerves in one arm severed, and also has wounds to his liver.

It's the Canberra Writer's Festival here this weekend that I'm working with a bit with uni at the moment, and this is really rattling. I really hope it doesn't impact these wonderful kind of festivals across the world.

Shirley I am hit or miss with Rushdie. I either love the book or find it excruciating. Loved Satanic Verses. Hated Midnight's Children. Lots of people loved it though.

I started Midnight's Children in 2013 for a group read in another group, but gave up after 50 pages, mostly because I wasn't in the mood for magical realism at the moment. My intention was to come back to it at some point. I can't believe that was 9 years ago.

I had read somewhere that The Satanic Verses was a "controversial book", but didn't know about the fatwa and everything else until around a year ago, when I read an article in the newspaper about Salman Rushdie because of his 75 years old birthday. And didn't know anything about the death of his Japanese translator, and the attacks to other translators until yesterday. Crazy.

The only thing I know about Rushdie is The Satanic Verses and the controversy it caused. I'm too young to remember it first hand (I was only 4 in 1984) but guess I heard about it later for some reason and never forgot. Or come to think about it.. when I grew up I loved Trivial Pursuit kind of games and it may have been a question in one of those games we had at home. When you play them often enough you end up knowing all questions and answers by heart, lol!

Oops, sorry, my mistake! I have Wingspan, the normal edition and an expand. Then other great ones are Calico and Scythe.
There's the option to play solo or with more. Like in Wingspan, it's just a little adjustment in the rules and board.

I had the weekend off and the last two days on vacation. I have to get back to working from home tomorrow.😊

I talked to a server at a restaurant on Saturday. We were talking about the weather and moving. She said she moved from Long Island to Wyoming and now she is in Oregon. I said it was too cold in Wyoming and the winter was too long. She said they had four seasons in Wyoming. They were Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, Labor Day, and Winter. 😎

I just read that on Romulus, they only had two seasons - too hot and too cold. 🖖🏻

I'm starting again on Monday, after 5 weeks off. I'm actually looking forward to it :) I really enjoyed my time off but I feel rested and ready to work again. I like my job too and I like to have a bit of structure in my life.

In other news, I saw the new book page you have all been talking about for 18 months today. At work, while not logged in, the new page popped up.

I was listening to the ABC Radio National Book Show about the Miles Franklin shortlist, and there is the first ever self published book nominated on the shortlist this year. The guy couldn't find a publisher, so decided after 10 years of writing he would just publish it himself, and is now up for the most prestigious book prize in the country for the book. Talk about vindication!!

Any way, looked up his book and saw the new pages... not a fan. And FINALLY understand you all :D

The book is Grimmish if anyone is interested.

The book page changed for me months ago. Now, a few days back, the old book page came back and there is a message that says "Thank you for participating in our new book page beta, which has now ended. We have returned you to the current version of the page while we prepare to bring the new book page experience to all of our customers". I didn't even know they were still trying it as beta. I thought at this point it was the page everyone was seeing.

I agree with Rusalka, WFH is easier to get back to. I am “hybrid” and can go into the office once a week or more, if I want to. At home, I can dress in anything I like, even for meetings. It is not require to turn our video on for most meetings. We do have some that we do though. I at least make sure my hair is brushed. 😉. We have virtual lunch once a month with our immediate work group. Video is optional but most of us turn it on. It is nice to see each other and keep in touch because we do not work with each other much. We are mostly a support organization and work across product teams in our business unit.

I stay 500 m from office and prefer to go to office everyday for half a day atleast. Of course, the office campus is beautiful and green, there is a free gym and the cafeteria food is not half bad!! beats cooking at home anyday!! :-)

I got the same message as you did, Shirley. For months I would go to a book's main page and get the new beta one and have to switch it to the old one. Hated the new one and said so in feedback. I'm much happier with the old one.

I'm so glad to be retired now. No dress codes, no "work" clothes. Just shorts, jeans, t-shirts. I do comb my hair and put on a little make-up (no one needs to see this face totally naked), but that's about it. And when I go to meet friends, I put on a nicer shirt. It's so much easier now.

I'm having a few rough days, and I spent the day at ER yesterday. They say i'm having a combo of migraine (no migraine pain) and a mix of anxiety. The ct-scan was unremarkable, saying that everything was good. Although I asked they consult with my neurosurgeon, I don't think they did. These were the symptoms I was getting before my first stroke. I will follow this up because I guess I have to be my own advocate.

So much fun to be dealing with this when we getting a second heat wave.

I hate it when Drs think that they know better than us, giving them free reign to disregard our requests 🤦‍♀️ maybe a call to your specialist to confirm that they got everything they needed from the ER Dr, and don’t need further steps from you? I have found that to be a nice “casual” way to get everybody in the loop. Good luck, and take care 🥰

I have been WFH since 2017. And my dress code went that way to. I usually mark the few meetings that I may have to turn my camera on with a vibrant purple background, This being said, i have a large shawl on my chair that I can "casually" wrap myself in if I get a surprise one.

That works well unless, like last week, my boss sends me a team message saying he would be stopping by to drop something in about 20 minutes. I was on another call and noticed it 15 minutes later. I looked down at myself and ran to my wardrobe shrieking like a banshee. Barely made it.

Oh, Janice. I'm so sorry you're not doing well. I would definitely follow up with your neurosurgeon. It's always best to consult with a doctor that knows you and to advocate for yourself. I hope everything turns out ok.

I remember many years ago my daughter was taken to the ER after a fall and had x-rays on her spine. They said she was fine and sent her home. A couple of days later her primary doctor called to check on her to see how she was doing. When I asked what she was specifically calling for I was told that my daughter had fractured a vertebrae and they wanted to make sure she had no further issues! No one even told us about it. I was so mad that they just sent her home like that with no information. She was literally getting ready to walk out the door to go sledding with friends. If she had gone and hit a bump wrong she could have been paralyzed, but no one from the hospital felt the need to inform us of this fracture.
