Lilisa | 2770 comments Great you’ve got your brush up lessons scheduled for next month, Janice. Hopefully all will go well and you’ll be driving again very soon, especially when the weather is still good! All the best.

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments Thanks. :) I hope to be driving by end of July.

Janice, I feel you're pain. I'm still jumping through hopes 17 years later. My licence only lasts 3 years now. I need to renew it this year so I have to make an optician appt to get my peripheral vision checked. I have that test - it's the one that HGV drivers take where you one eye covered and stare into this machine. They put a control in your hand and you have to push a button every time you see a flickering light. Those little effers are so hard to catch, even on my good side. I was moaning to a friend yesterday that I wonder how many "normal" drivers our age would pass. Being an observant driver depends of so much more that Range of Vision otherwise machines could replace driving instructors!

Anyway, I'm glad to hear it went well for you.

Word of warning - my biggest battle was with the insurance companies. Untill recently they changed the goal posts every year. Now that all opticians have been forced to invest in the equipment I just described they've settled on that. Of course this was for my specific brain injury which sounds to have been much more severe than yours.

I think second to my dyslexia, driving was the biggest obstacle I faced post brain injury. But....that was 2 decades ago and I'm really hoping things have moved on.

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments Thanks Margo. I know the machine you're talking about. The technician said not to worry about missing the dots or hitting the button in anticipation. It's set up with a margin of error. Every case here is different, and I may not even need an assessment by my optician. I will find out when I get a letter from the government.

Yes, hopefully you won't need that test.

It's horrible when authorities question your ability to do something that you've been doing every day of your adult life. The waiting is difficult *hugs*

Saar The Book owl | 2649 comments I didn't know that it was so difficult to get your driving license back after a stroke, Janice, at least they could've made you make the test in your own familiar car. I'll hope you get it back and that you can drive again.

It' s a heat wave here! It's going to be 35°C today. It has been now the 3rd or so day and it's ridiculous...I've worked an hour and a half in my vegetable garden yesterday and it was too much.

So, exams are over and now it's impatiently waiting on my results. My first year as a student veterinary assistant has been wonderful, stressy with work and household...but I've found my passion. I've learned so much and although I'm not so social I got to know a couple of new friends. Now it's waiting for results, re -exams and then the 2nd year. Can't wait!

message 659: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments I always hated waiting for exam results. Best of luck Saar - I'm sure you aced it ;-)

The reason they make you do the test in a strange car is duel controls. Janice was grand but I've heard some horror stories of people not seeing red lights, not keeping to their side of the road etc. Stroke can be unpredictable. I wasn't let near a car for 9 months after mine due to dysphasia.

message 660: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments It's great that your exams are over Saar. Hopefully you won't wait too long for your results.

We had rain today so it's on the cool side.

Its the opposite here with a sudden start to winter.
Pleased to hear that you have found your passion, and is an occupation I admire greatly.
Good luck with the exam results.

message 664: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 2649 comments Exam results will be all published the last Tuesday of June. I know the results of some already, but here, since a couple of years, the marks have changed. During the year, after each exam, you get a mark. The difference between the fulltime students and the ones who follow the study from distance (school - work - household, but you have lessons almost 1 day/week and you learn everything that the regular student needs to learn), is that you can spread the exams. So, you get a mark after your exam: A, B, C or D. A and B means you've past the exam. Each mark has a set of points, but you'll kow that only in June, at the end of the academic year. So, for now, I've got 2 A's, 3 B's, 1 C and 1 D. But I haven't got my final scores yet and still waiting in some results. I hope my explanation is a bit clear, haha.

We had a big thunderstorm early in the morning and it's now at least 10°C colder.

message 665: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments Well it sounds to me like you're safe but I'll hold off on the congrats till tuesday😉

It's around 20c hear but it feels like thunder. It is dark and overcast and so bloody humid!

Odette (odman) | 997 comments Shortest day over, but still bitterly cold. Feel more optimistic as the days slowly lengthen.

message 670: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19137 comments Funny how when it is summer for us, I don't want to think about it being the longest day of the year because it feels all downhill to winter from there and the summer is just beginning. Yet, when it is flipped, I'm so excited that our shortest day is done and we will be getting at least more sunshine, even though winter is far from over. Glad for you that your shortest day is behind you now, Odette.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Lol Kristie, same! It also just doesn't match up that it's the longest day and summer is starting, yet it's getting darker sooner already. It would make more sense for summer to start June 21, and the longest day towards the end of July ;-)

You'll need to have a chat with the Man (or woman or person or being) upstairs to try to arrange that Peggy ;-p

message 683: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments It has pretty much been a month now in my new job and at my new flat! Time really does fly. My life is looking pretty unrecognisable right now but in a very good way. I really like my flat and my cat Kylo has adapted to being a house cat really well (after a few weeing on my new sofa mishaps). The little town I live in is pretty cute and it's a good distance for my commute to work. I'm loving the convenience of a flat and being in a town. I've picked up my job really well and my line manager is really happy with me. I'm really enjoying it. And I'm enjoying all the NHS discount I can now get, one of the perks of my job, good timing considering everything is so expensive here all of a sudden. I feel like I've settled into everything quicker than I thought I would and whilst it has been stressful at times, I've definitely coped better than I expected too. So that's a relief. I've also restarted seeing hypnotherapy clients one day a week so everything is falling into place nicely. I'm getting someone to paint my boat over the next couple of weeks and then it should be ready to sell. Hopefully, it won't take too long. Will be soooo good to be free of it now.

Congrats on getting the FF tickets Peggy, I hope you have an amazing time!

I'm pleased you are making steps to getting your driving license reinstated Janice, how annoying that it was revoked in the first place!

message 684: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments Great to hear all is going well for you Sarah. What a huge change for Kylo - a boat cat to a land cat overnight. I'm not surprised she weed on your sofa. She was probably wondering why her home was so still LOL

message 691: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 2649 comments @Peggy: waw, Foo Fighter tickets! You were lucky to get them. I hope they will continue as a band, but who knows....

I managed to buy a ticket for Rammstein in August! Their tour got cancelled twice due to Covid and it was sold out before that already. I've received an email yesterday that, because I was on the waiting list, there were tickets available again. I had to work and it took me an hour and a half before I could finally buy my ticket!

I'm doubting to buy tickets for Bruce Springsteen next year too.

message 696: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4528 comments I've started a new project. My neighbor has a beautiful desert rose that he takes out in the summer months so it can get full sun and produce lovely pink/red flowers. Everyone who passes by stops and admires this unusual plant with it's knobby exposed root ball and beautiful flowers. I liked it so much I went out and bought one for myself (a very small one). He came by one day and told me he had some seeds I could have if I wanted to try starting the plant from scratch. So, I took them (12 seeds), read everything I could find and now have 10 sprouted baby desert roses. I told my neighbor that if this works out we have Christmas presents for those people who stopped to admire his plant. Or we could just go into business for ourselves and sell them. It would only take 5 or 6 years for them to become interesting looking. 😏

Kristie | 19137 comments It's a long goal plan, Roz! I bought some little berry plants and this is summer two with them. We are hoping to finally get some berries next year. I bet those flowers are pretty.

message 698: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments That sounds really cool Roz!

We have several berries I don't know the English names for, raspberries and grapes. I mostly watch the birds enjoying them though, lol!

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments My sister brought me a couple of tomato plants in containers. They are starting to get fruit. I can hardly wait for them to ripen and have some fresh tomatoes.

message 700: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4528 comments Fresh home grown tomatoes are the best, Janice. I’m jealous! I’m not sure they’d survive here. We’re getting temps of 106 - 107 (F) the next few days. Yikes!!
