Vagabond Treehouse (2023) [Beware of Chicken 3 - December 4th]
Looks like it was published towards the end of the series (book 4-5)... and the quality is subpart, with little editing...
Seems possibly safe to read at the beginning, but might not give a good first impression...

Started Strange Practice yesterday… picked it up on a sale earlier this year… the Dr. Greta Helsing series…
One of my friends reviewed it as a humorous Penny Dreadful story…
Took me a long time to get it straight that this is set in present day and not 1800s… the cover and blurb feels very 1800s, then I’d hear a line about surveillance and 3D printing… at first I wondered if maybe accelerated technology… cause the murders are called Ripper Murders…

Almost done with Strange Practice, Greta Helsing #1... the tone reminded me of Night in Lonesome October... the hijinks and action/mystery reminded me of an episode of Buffy, right down to the hideout in the sewers...

I enjoyed it... there's 3 books in the series, I have 2 of them...
First one takes place in London... second at a medical conference in Paris, 3rd at a spa for mummies in Marseille region of Spain...
EDIT: I'm probably gonna say you should check out any book I don't outright hate or feel indifferent about / close alot... anything I read in 1 sitting / day, basically... :D
Altho, I still need you to catch up on Black Hat Bureau (I read #6 and you didn't), and we need to continue with Marla Mason (I read #6 and you didn't), Agatha Heterodyne (we're on #3 next), probably Theirs Not to Reason Why, and Ghosts of Gotham (trying to wait for audio #4 before scheduling 3+4)... just saying, the open series keep piling up, when we start new ones instead of finishing old ones :D

I've read about 250 books, this year, according to the spreadsheet... should be about 10/week...
That site outtage last night was super annoying... I feel like the site always breaks when I'm sitting here constantly refreshing, wanting to talk...
And even though the site is functioning again, I still get alot of error loads... so it's not really 100% yet, I don't think...
Pretty late yesterday, I finished 2 of my weekly BR reads, and decided to finally read Priest of Crowns, after buying it nearly a year ago, on sale, I think...
This is the finale of the War for the Rose Throne series, which is basically Peaky Blinders with magic, from what the critics say... I've loved every entry of this series I've read... and I've had one of the easiest times listening to this series, despite long gaps waiting for new books and no re-reads... it's impressive really, given all the characters...
I'm over half done with the book already, and it's been pretty bonkers, as expected, considering how memorable the finale of the previous book was... the magic system in this series is relatively mysterious and bonkers... it has that no-holds-barred feeling of the magic in the Manifest Delusions series or the later Lot Lands books...

Speaking of things I don't mention reading around here... my recent go-to read, when I don't know what else I want to read, has been a full re-read of Melissa F. Olson's Old World mega-series...
All the books are available on Kindle Unlimited Read & Listen, except maybe some of the anthologies/short stories, that you can snag up for cheap...
There's Scarlett Bernard, null mage (has an aura that nullifies other supernaturals, and makes them temporarily human, like in the Parasol Protectorate series by Gail Carriger) -- 2 trilogies
And there's Allison "Lex" Luthor, boundary witch (think necromancer / witchy vampire, that is really hard to kill, can interact with ghosts, and can use vampire tricks ON vampire (control/mind manipulate)... she has a niece whose a null, and is protecting her)...
The trilogies alternate, and there's 2 anthologies... the series kinda got derailed for a few years when the author got pregnant... last year, she wrapped up the storylines for now, with a big Old World War Avengers scenario, but I feel like I need a re-read to prepare for it, so that's what I've been doing...
I'm about halfway through my re-read now, having read one trilogy in each series, over the past month or 2...
The series was originally a Buddy Read, a few years ago, with Daniel & Laura, I think...

half the time I load a book page, it asks me to sign in, and I have to reload to register I'm already signed in... so parts of the site are clearly struggling to communicate with one another...
I think there's a larger problem with the internet yesterday/today...
Audible purchase button was broken yesterday... there was a banner acknowledging that sales were failing to process/complete...

Adding Melissa F. Olson - Old World...

Honestly, I feel like I'm refreshing more today... the site is super broken... have to refresh alot, and then sometimes refresh some more to get comments posted... I'd hate to be trying to create new threads today...

It's what I do... basically everything I read that doesn't suck ends up on someone's TBR :D
I wonder if I'd like War for the Rose Throne as much, if I'd ever actually watched more than a few episodes of Peaky Blinders... sometimes there's real advantages to watching so little TV, I guess... :D

Finished Priest of Crowns, and don't know how to feel...
Some people in reviews, compare the series to Game of Thrones, but I saw more parallels to Joe Abercrombie, especially the newer Age of Madness trilogy...
The book was great/amazing/etc... but I have some pretty conflicted feelings about the characters, and their motivations/end results/how reliable the narrator was in the end, etc... then again, these are written as memoirs, and the story repeatedly tells us that history is written by the victors, so I shouldn't be too surprised :D

What have you done to me, Choko?!?... you've reawakened a hunger... for romance novels...
It's all Dark Hunter's fault... I mentioned it over there, but I've gone ahead and started a Psy-Changeling re-read, with my spare Hoopla credits... on book 2 already...

Hah! Me too! I've been seeing War for the Rose Throne around... definitely want to read that at some point... and I've picked up a few Melissa F. Olson books too...
**Fingers crossed** GR actually isn't being too horrible right now...
How you doin' Choko? That storm was intense... power's out in half my town (44% according to outage map I just checked)... I'm part of the lucky 55% this time...
Power is out at work, and 90% of the stoplights on my drive home... so many idiot drivers not following the rules and treating it like a 4 way stop intersection...
Made it home, tho, and have power to cook...
I heard the town on the other side of the interstate has a fair bit of property damage from the tornado... and power out all over the place in the region, according to coworkers...

The outage map has been getting worse instead of better... but it also looks like they've finally started making some progress on fixing some...

Work still doesn't have power... 1/3 of town still doesn't have power... apparently a transformer exploded and caught fire yesterday...

Got to go home and get paid for a full shift, apparently... SNOW DAY!!! :D
City also declared a local state of emergency, and a curfew from 10pm to 5am for all non-essential travel, with half the stoplights in town still out...

I'm a bit further south... not really a suburb of Chicago... I'm about halfway between Chicago and St. Louis...'

Great news... I saw he'd been publishing that new Ishmael trilogy, in the Spring...
I picked up the Shaman & Smuggler's Tales on that big sitewide sale, so I could read those before I move on to Ishmael 7-9 and the new 10-12... probably gonna start Shaman's Tales this month or next month, when I have a gap in my BR reading...

I submitted BR requests for Discworld starting in January 2024... two books a month, on the 8th & 22nd... we discussed this several times in the past, but Narilka reminded me in the Battle Ground thread, and I pulled the trigger on it... only put in requests for the first 12 for now, through June 2024... super hyped... gonna try and get some of the new recordings they've been doing for the 40th/50th anniversary (depending if you measure from release of Discoworld or start of Pratchett's career)...

You should join, even if the BR pace fizzles you out, you can get an idea if they're something you'd want to revisit later on, at your own pace...

Also, Iain, your typo of Disco-world made me smile... ^^

The internet says the early Discworld books have some Hitchhiker vibes, but Pratchett settles into his own style after 3-4 books...
I honestly liked the first Hitchhiker book, and felt like the series had diminishing returns... I abandoned the series around book 3...

Same, basically... I'm sure there'll be alot of interest at the start, and we'll see how much maintains momentum...
