And now you see why I've been rhapsodizing about this series to all that would listen, for like 5+ years now... it's the best thing that came of the one time I signed up for a 6 month pick it for me reading buddy over in Girls, Guns, & Grimoires... I was on a steampunk kick, back then, and my Buddy suggested this series among others... it's so unique and completely fun...

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments You are so right!!! This was a ton of fun!!! I loved the quirky world building and I want to know everything about the characters! The hero-adventurer was so entertaining, the cat was awesome, and I wanted to hug Dimitri and his bears!!! I am a bit split as far as the Baron is concerned... (view spoiler)

I enjoyed it tremendously:))

Now I will jump for a quick read of Captain Share and will be back for book #2...

By the way, I am up to Ch. 3 in Captain Share, and Ishmael is 38 years old and 7 years married!!!! Whaaaaaatttt?! And obviously it's not easy to have a marriage while being a deep spacer... I hate seeing him so... depressed, I guess? Just not a natural state for his character...

don't you mean "meowsome"?... I'll see myself out... Krosp DOES add meow to alot of words, tho...

and yea... the tone of Captain's Share & Owner's Share (and much of Double Share, honestly), are quite different from the first trilogy... Ishmael grows up, and deals with alot more serious problems... the 3rd trilogy looks promising, tho, in regard to being more fun like the first trilogy... not sure how, given where the plot is headed...

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Oh-o! Now I am scared!!! I have been feeling something coming, you know when you are paranoid that something bad will happen, but I have no idea what... I really don't want the bodyguard girl to die though... And I don't want pirates to destroy or steal the ship... I can't think of anything else too terrible that could happen, since I know we are not losing Ish, because we have more books...

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Hahaha! I remember that line:)))

I finished Owner's Share ... All that at the end happened so fast!!! It almost felt like the author was taking his time through 95% of the book, then just rushed through the last 5% because it was so sad... I don't think he likes bad or sad vibes and you can tell... I was very surprised and you were right - bad it was...:((( I still liked it, just kind of a downer... Do you plan on reading the next books, or should we do all the beginning of the month BRs first and return to it?

I'll probably do the Shaman trilogy next, and the next Agatha book, but not before I do 2-3 other BRs, so probably not until next Monday...

I need to do Sisters Grimm 5, the Space Janitor 2.5 novella, Verity Kent 5 , and October Daye 5...

I hope you like it more on 2nd try, Emily... it throws you in fast, with a prologue with little context... then time jumps, and is a bit like the opening to Alice in Wonderland or TV/Movie, where the character is in a hurry and running late... after a few chapters, you get your bearings and can follow the story better, I think...

Started book 2 re-read, Choko: some favorite extra characters are introduced in this one, like Zeetha, daughter of Chump... also, I think the authors do more footnotes in this one, and later insert themselves into the story as historians of this world...

Read Agatha H and the Clockwork Princess yesterday and the day before, as I mentioned a bit previously...

This one is twice as long as the first book, but it doesn't feel like it... it also doesn't feel like too too much happened, before you reach the climax and everything slams together in glorious ways...

I think part of that is the nature of webcomics, which are generally plotted differently than books...

It has a number of laugh-out-loud moments, no matter how many times I re-read the series... usually something the Jaegermonsters do... and also a number of big reveals that will have long-term repercussions on the story, (view spoiler)

message 4773: by Choko (new) - rated it 4 stars

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments I am only 40% in, but I am enjoying it tremendously! Let's just say it right away - the Jaegermonsters are my favorite!

Then we can't ignore the Cat! When they were in the forest and found the lost kid, the cat's commentary that they found their "provisions" and the subsequent argument why they shouldn't eat it, had me laughing for real. The thoughts that come to the Sparks are fascinating!!! You never know what insane thing they are trying to not do next:))))

I am really enjoying the story! The background on Clause's relationship is interesting... I still don't like his methods and choice of allies in the pirate lady though...

1) Jaegermonsters are the best
2) The Cat/kid scene was hilarious, and the kid's all "you must be circus people" :D
3) I let Klaus get away with so much, for the type of story this is... the pirate lady too, who I find comically violent...

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Same here. I am terrified for everyone's state of well being when she is on page, but I appreciate the fact that she always tends to choose her bloodthirsty nature over common sense or really anything else:)))

Agatha is not a very good actress, is she? At least she is a good mechanic:)

50% in... I want to know what is causing everything to be getting fixed little by little... Is she fixing things in her sleep, or has she created more of her little robots, or is it just the magic within her somehow influencing stuff?

Girl Genius: Agatha’s robo-creations are explored more in the next book… I love how even Agatha is put of the loop at first, until someone complains about the ticking noise :D

Marla Mason: Grim Tides is the Suicide Squad book… or Sinister Six… also, TA Pratt gets to start featuring his favorite character, now that he’s writing these through Kickstarter… Elsie Jarrow the chaos witch that Nicolette idolizes and spent the first 5 books in the insane asylum/prison for wizards just outside Felport…

She has an interesting arc that runs parallel to Marla through the 2nd set of 5 books…

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Girl Genius - I just passed the clicking noise!!! Haha! Absolutely adorable!

Lars and Agatha just don't work for me and all together, I think... They both seem to be sexually frustrated, but apart from that, nothing much in common... However, I can see it's a bad idea to have a mad genius running around while sexually frustrated...

I kinda want to listen to all the Animorphs audiobooks next year... bit of childhood nostalgia, but also a pretty messed up series in hindsight, marketed to children...

It's about an alien invasion of Earth, similar to the lizard people in the show V, but these are brain slugs... a group of kids get shapeshifting technology from injured friendly aliens and start a resistance movement... there's 54 books, and 5-10 companion books (about side alien races that are important to the series, and Avengers-style Megamorph books that tell bigger stories with multiple POVs)...

After 3 years of monthly releases, the 54th and final main entry came out last week... the companion chronicles will start releasing later this year, and over half of them will be out by Christmas... I figure the last of them will be out early next, making it the perfect timing...

The stories are pretty short... 100-200 pages.. typical monthly released kids books, common in the 90s, I'd say... audio is only 3-4hrs per book for the main series... the companion books are longer... and you can generally skim the 2nd chapter of each book, which is a recap of the worldbuilding and previous events to keep people up to speed...

I tried doing a re-read about a decade ago on my Kindle, and made it through about a dozen of the books... I see the series mentioned online occasionally, and it rekindles my nostalgia, and how crazy the series is... one of the often-mentioned episodes includes a character beating someone to death with their own severed arm...

Anyway... it seems like something I can zoom through in my spare time, once In Death & Dark Hunter are over with, and maybe someone else would be interested to join me...

As much as thinking about it makes me want to start sooner, I really want to wait for the Megamorphs and one-offs to start releasing, so I can read everything in 100% order...

These were a big thing from the mid-90s to mid-00s... there was even a show on Nickelodeon with Shawn Ashmore and other lesser known actors...

I'll be in for Threshold... this'll be like my 4th readthrough... 1/2 are my faves... 3 alright... 4 I need to better appreciate on repeat, hopefully... it's a true crossover with tons of Easter Eggs for superfans that remember all the smaller details... I hope Clines writes a 5th one... been awhile since he released an Audible Original, but those don't tend to get much marketing before sudden release...

Yahtzee Croshaw is another oddball author recommendation... he hasn't published anything in awhile... I read his Jack McQueen, I mean Jacques McKeown, books a few years ago... the only other thing he really has that I can read is Differently Morphous, which he's working on a sequel to, last I heard...

Jacques McKeown: Will Save the Galaxy for Food & Will Destroy the Galaxy for Cash

EDIT: Looks like the sequel came out already... maybe he's working on a 3rd Jacques book now... Existentially Challenged is the sequel to Differently Morpheus...

They are... super fun... especially the 2nd one... they follow a space grifter who makes the mistake of pretending to be a famous space adventurer / author whose been writing memoirs... this leads to him getting blackmailed by the assistant of and entangled with a space mobster whose incompetent son is the famous space adventurer's #1 fan... things get out of hand... hijinks ensue... and he swears off the identity...

Only to get roped in again... the 2nd book goes to even crazier heights, and he even ends up on TV in-persona... then the memoir writer starts writing books about the crazy stuff being done by the grifter in his name...

The theoretical 3rd book could do anything... it's got it's work cut out for it, to outdo the 2nd book, I think... they're kinda off-the-wall bonkers...
