Vagabond Treehouse (2023) [Beware of Chicken 3 - December 4th]
I’ve been getting new releases I might have otherwise waited for… not sure I need to use anymore credits… maybe 1-2… have more UF/PNR new releases first week of March tho, so it’ll be easy…
Neuvel book is on Hoopla TBR for me… missed BR last year, I think…

Oh yeah that one's good! I need to continue the series. But I might reread the first one. Maybe when the third comes out in April.

The humor was only in the beginning of the story. XD
The rest of the story was a mish-mash of history & stuff happening. A bit wobbly in showing the story, but it was interesting. I don't think the answers to the questions I have are going to be answered though, and that's kinda sad.

A Hero Born

Also been seeing A Hero Born around on lists... looking forward to your thoughts, Soo. I always feel guilty reading things in translation though... I feel like I should pick it up more books in Chinese but my Chinese is so rusty it'd be so much work... and I'm lazy...

A Hero Born"
I gave that one 3 stars. It was entertaining but might have been better for me in print. I hope you enjoy it.

A Hero Born #1 - I'm about 1/3 to half done.
Thoughts:
1) It's one of those stories written in a simple manner, but that's deceptive because you would think it'd be easy to follow. Due to the style/translation, you have to pay attention to what's said because the small descriptions have to be held fast in your head & connected to the rest that follows. Lots of moving characters & plot loaded scenes.
For example, in any of the epic series we love to read, each book is long enough to have drawn out thoughts, actions, etc. In A Hero Born, there are only a few drawn out sentences & a series of staccato descriptions & actions. I actually have to pay attention to the story more in audio format or I find it easy to lose track of who is doing what.
A nice example of writing a rich story with less words.
2) There's a bunch left unsaid/not translated. Like I didn't know months had gone by between one event & the next until much later.
I think the story would be hard to follow & get the "why" a lot of stuff happens due to lack of context for some people. If you don't know anything about Wuxia, Xianxia, martial arts, Tao, etc, there's a certain lack of depth to the story. It makes what happens seem shallow & not as meaningful or connected.
Like how people could go from offering a drink, making a threat, fighting with killing intent and then become best buds within minutes. XD
JAM PACKED! XD
It was easier to have events in context in Musashi than in A Hero Born. Sort of.
3) The active scenes are a clear portrayal of what's going on, but so much happens in sequence that I end up pausing the story or rewinding cause I let my brain think about it longer than the moment is given in narration. XD
I've grown up watching movies/series about the stories spun from this series. It's fun to match up previous experiences with what I'm reading.

Yah, it was a wonky transition piece. Do you want Zoya to stay alive or keel over? I'd be cool with her dying to save GM. XD

I liked it! I think the translator did not write the story to be read by English readers and that's where some of the hiccups for the story come across. It may make it seem uneven, jumpy, etc.
Not sure if it's in the original, but the story was told in a block format: intro of characters/setting, maybe setting, some dialogue, action. Similar to how you'd experience a story in TV shows.
A lot happened within a few hundred pages & I can see how that could be a turn off for some people. There was a lot of context that was missing from the story. I say a lot cause the differences between Mongolian cultures, the Jin/Yin and Song/etc were distinct. So a little note isn't enough to show how different that could be. Though, I did like how there were phrases like how Jing ordered simple meats + bread & rolled them together to eat.
I liked the intro notes & end notes. I learned today that kung fu means to do something over & over.
I do think I knew that the Legend of the Condor Heroes title translation was made more for the English fans than anything else. Title should be more like: The Legend of the Birds of Prey Heroes
XD
The poetic stance names may sound like blah blah blah to other people, but I really liked it. It's easy to imagine most of them from the phrase.

[book:A Hero Bo..."
A week per book sounds good! Maybe starting with the second week of April? The beginning of the month is absolutely packed for me xD

[bo..."
I could do a book/week if it was in late May-early August, but I don't think I could do it before that....
Looks like I'm going for big points, this month, in the reading competition...
Blood of Liscor's only ebook edition, from Amazon, is listed at 1684 pages... pretty nice for a 43hr audiobook...

You just gotta do a google search... tech bargains always seems to have a new link when I search: https://www.techbargains.com/deals/am...
$144 for 24 months = $6/mo like usual...
I'm gonna wait a bit to re-up... my sub ends in September... but Audible is about to renew, and I've been spending money left and right, lately, as I dealt with my apartment situation... I'm about sorted... replaced some stuff, got tons of plastic storage containers, basically improved my setup in alot of ways... just need to get an air purifier and a few more odds & ends... and that TV stand...
For now, I'm just using 2 stacked heavy duty 40 gallon storage containers as my TV stand... works pretty well... except when I need stuff out of the containers...

Followed through on my plans to cancel Netflix, Hulu, and Disney... should have done that months ago... $25 per month + $80/yr saved... $380 total... been at least 6 months since I watched anything seriously on there... September I did when I was having medical problems...

Tried the Tech link & it was a bust. I think that one is new subscribers.
This link?... seems like it's working for me: I have the 3 price options, and you gift it to your own email address and redeem it... can take up to 24hrs to receive the email...

Woah, I totally didn't get that link. I was just sent to Amazon Kindle page.
Iain my link hero!
I clicked the price options near the top of the tech page, not the get the deal button at the bottom (which seemed to be some other $5 thing)
I just tried it after you had issues... I knew, from the first time I opened the page that it looked like previous versions we used, so didn't doublecheck the links...

Kindle Offer Link
I hope no one else tried it. I tried it. Thought I got the deal. Then had my account locked. Called Amazon Customer Service & the dude could only tell me that a SPECIALIST will email me.
Maybe within 24hrs/etc
Account is locked until they unlock it. Maybe in 24 hrs
(barfs)
Your account was locked for using the link I gave you?
I trimmed the URL to remove the gibberish tracking IDs from the initial link from Tech Bargains... I wonder if that caused the issue?...

Trimming down the link isn't going to make it get flagged as hack/etc. Not sure what happened exactly. Unless they are cracking down on people buying the sale for their existing account. I doubt it's that though. Amazon want's to make money. The discount doesn't really save us that much.
Yea, and we spend plenty of money elsewhere on books to get cheap audio/etc... and the Audible sales... weird...
Internet says they flag suspicious spending (probably to avoid refund requests when banks report fraud)...
I did some googling earlier... found a woman in Norway that was locked because a replacement kindle could only be provided for free if sent to the original country of purchase (UK), when it bricked...

The follow up email to change password & all is suspicious too. Like it tells you to re-enter credit card info, etc.
I'm like, hmm, if I want more personal info, that's exactly what I would tell them to do. XD

I dumbed it down. Explained clearly & those guys were so stuck on the "what I'm suppose to say" list, they didn't listen. Very annoying.
No option but to talk to them about account access stuff now. No more Amazon Live Chat for those kind of issues.
Doing ratings/reviews in bulk is such a hassle, since GR got so bot-wary...
3 reviews and you have to do the "I'm not a robot" checkbox... 20 or so, and you have to start doing the picture puzzles... 30-60, and you have to start doing 2-3 puzzles for each review... feels better to just do in small doses...
I just did January 10th to 31st...

Because my Audible membership renews in March, I've been going nuts looking for audiobooks to use up my credits. I pretty much threw away 3 creds on the Destiny serial. It was easy to listen to while I did other stuff. I avoided looking at my downloaded/not started audiobooks.
XD XD XD
I was running out of space on the tablet. I knew it was from the audiobooks. Had to remove a few books/tomes/series. I have a ton of audiobooks to listen to because I stopped last year.
Still need to spend the rest of my creds before membership renewal, but I'm gonna work on reading stuff I have & getting next of series books. Not as many "new" & unknown.
Many goodies in the Audiobook TBR stack. Gotta cut that down to a smaller mound. XD heheheheh
