Same… on the forgetting pre-order… went to but again and it was already in my library… might save it for a work day, since I know I’ll devour it…

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments OH DANG! Forgot to buy it. Gonna get it now. I'll listen to it after The Pariah. Which I started & it's good. Though, I wish Ryan would get another narrator. XD

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments There's a Book 13 for Space Team listed on Audible but no audiobook & it's not on KU either. Hopefully, it's in the works of being pub!

I'm in S2 of the Dark. A German SF-Mystery on Netflix. I've actually caught up on a bunch of random shows on Netflix in the past few weeks. XD

The Dark is pretty good! Tight, overlapping story lines with time travel, etc going on.

I've been feeling pretty lucky, lately, how well I prepped for my reading this year... Most of it is sitting on my PC waiting to be transferred to my iPod, or waiting to be checked out on Hoopla/KU/Audible Plus... All my BRs, anyway... Or new releases waiting to be bought/pre-ordered ...

My hotel stay keeps getting extended... I'm really using the insurance stipend to the fullest, in that regard... I think landlord/maintenance was overly optimistic the day of the incident, and the project grew once they started tearing down ceiling/insulation... They're still drying out the apartment (dehumidifier tank stopped filling multiple times a day over the weekend, but continues to find 1/2 a tank or more per day)... Then something went out on the heater, and now they need to fix that or replace it(I'm unclear which they're doing)... And scheduling issues with the remodeling service/team... So that work won't happen until next week, and I won't be moving back in until the 24th or 27th most likely... 3 weeks from the incident... But it'll be like moving into a new apartment with a new lease... Full cleaning, patching, fixing, repainting... Everything they'd do before signing a new tenant... That's what they say... And that's what it's been sounding like as I get updates on timeline the past few days...

Also been thinking about some authors I can't seem to stop wanting to try/continue/finish, despite hiccups in the past... Mostly SF authors...

The Polity universe (read 3-4 books I think, in 2 tries)

Iain M. Banks Culture series (read 4-5 of these, and they're always weird/different)

Peter F. Hamilton tomes like the Reality Dysfunction... tried once...

Could probably include Malazan and Discworld here, except I'm already reading or planning to read these...

It was pretty solid, day 1… then I mostly interacted with maintenance men the rest of week 1, while clearing out all my stuff into storage and cleaning the bathroom… being around so much, I made sure to check the dehumidifier tank…

Then I visited landlord office at the 1 week mark on monday, to get an official update, and he called maintenance supervisor, said that guy would call me in 24hrs or I should call him… called him, got some info and a callback by end of day, then ran into him at my apartment this morning and got a bit more update…

I first noticed the heater stuff and drying progress myself, but heard it reiterated from them after…

Initial optimistic estimates had everything taken care of by now pr by Friday… but I doubted that, when I hadn’t seen work start yet…

Been keeping insurance agent updated, and getting hotel stay extended slowly but surely… extended to 27th now… Hotel company has room reserved until April, but that’s just them being cautious, or reserving the room for the next local needing a hotel for rental insurance reasons…

My insurance stipend for hotels will run out around March 7th, I think… and I need to check out as soon as I can move home or incur charges… the sooner the better, honestly… I mostly have my phone and ipod and hotel wifi to fill my time, now that cleanup is done on my side… you can only clean and organize so much, before you run out of things to clean and organize…

I’ve done 110 Sudokus in the past 9 days… 50 of them in the past 2 days… pen and paper magazine… might need to get some different puzzles for variety…

That’s great to hear, Emily…

My grandma think this water situation has kicked me out of a rut, a bit… bad situation, but change in patterns, and she said I sounded more upbeat during our weekly call than I have for the last few weeks/months/who knows how long…

I’ve definitely been productive, buying small things I needed to buy, noting some changes I should make to my apartment cleaning regimen, etc… getting more sunlight/outdoor time…

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Okay! If you feel like diving into a time travel mystery show, the Dark is great! Three seasons, 8 eps each. Completed story arc. Wonderful plot lines that explores what can be, will be, connections for events/people and etc. It's rather dark but driven by hope/love. Really well done on causality, motives, the idea of fate/god/etc.

Watch it in original German audio with English subs. That's the best way. =D

message 4370: by Soo (new) - rated it 3 stars

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Because of the way the story unfolds & jumps around for POV/etc, you have to pay attention to it. I mean, I was pretty casual about watching it, but I'd rewind to re-watch parts if I needed to.

Very complex plot with web-like threads going all over the place. There were a few points (cause of the time difference or aging of the variety of actors) where I definitely felt like I got people blind. Like everyone looks like everyone else. You have to watch to understand. XD

For a dark, SF - it held to a core of positivity that was well done.

message 4371: by Soo (new) - rated it 3 stars

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments I'd totally chat about the episodes with ya'll if you want to watch & chat bout the show here. XD

It's the kind of thing where Iain could get super involved noting events, expressions, phrases, etc.

Made my brain happy with the complexity & writer side happy with the tight story arcs.

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Ugh, I don't know why Amazon decided that ratings can't be done in app. Ratings have nothing to do with purchasing the audio/ebook. Tried to set my rating for Pariah & got nada in app for tablet & cell.

I prob won't be rating the Audible audios anymore. I don't feel like writing a review for each book & you have to write something if you rate via website.

The Last Orphan - Agreed! Starts with a bang!

Tonari no Emily (emlfem) | 5115 comments Iain, yes that's what I was thinking too! Started a bit on my drive home, but I think I might need to start over. Only got 15 min in so not a big deal. Yeah it is something I had to concentrate more on.. Can't let my mind wander. About 75% done with the first story now, had to stop because my phone died and had to charge it in another room.. But then I just started the second Heartstrikers instead. I'll pick them back up tomorrow.

That was great! I loved the overall plot flow, action, angst & humor. I feel like there should have been another hour to really develop the "bad guys" but I can live with what's in print. =D

It sounds like Greg Hurwitz is putting X on pause more than a "end forever" deal. While listening to the story, I was thinking about other work by Hurwitz & they're just not as fun as Orphan X series. I paused on the Crime Writer because it felt less substantial as a story. Plus, it always feels like the MC is basically Greg Hurwitz's fictional form. XD

I believe I paid to have these apps without ads. It's been a long time so I don't remember now.

Android Devices:
- Smart Audiobook Player
- Simple ABP

I like that they have simple interfaces, the audiobooks organized by the folders & order that I put on the phone & I can speed up the audiobooks without it distorting the narration.

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Timelord Iain wrote: "Did you get that from the interview at the end, Soo?… I kinda skipped it…"

Go back & listen to it. Part of it is them talking to each other bout their work & it was obviously a scripted "chat". Hurwitz basically left it open ended on if there will be more Orphan X.

The book was well done! The fight scenes were fun, X dished out more of his brand of sarcasm, the relationship stuff was tied up in a nice knot, etc. The good parts made it possible to gloss over the iffy parts. =D

I also liked how there was a reflective connection of what was going on between like Evan & Joe, etc. Cause it tends to be true in real life. Like if I'm going through some sort of emotional process or mental gymnastics, etc, there's usually a few friends or acquaintances dealing with something similar. That kind of commonality was rep well in the story.

ETA: I don't like most of Lisa Gardner's books. Premise are ok, but the stories haven't had well developed characters or interesting crime/mystery plot/process.

Like, I read Nora Roberts because she's a good writer. All of the stories are good to great, but I don't read her for a complex mystery/action. I read them for the characters, their relationships & the fantasy elements. I'm like, if you're known for writing mysteries, it should be ok mysteries & have solid character creation & development. Most of the trendy mystery/crime writers don't really have that.

Like, I can't get into Michael Connelly books after I tried several & found myself thrown out of the story a lot. I don't think he has a good weave of connecting his overlapping characters, etc.

Give me Don Winlow, Craig Johnson, Harlan Coben, John Connolly - Man, I know I've read good crime-mysteres by female writers, but none are poping into mind right now. XD
