Vagabond Treehouse (2023) [Beware of Chicken 3 - December 4th]

I finished System Apocalypse series by Tao Wong. I figured out what he was doing plot wise & the idea was good, but execution was lacking. Audiobook made it super easy to take in the story.
My guess is that Wong didn't know how to write the mega story he started and decided he wanted to end it sooner vs later. Not a bad idea. If you get stuck on how to write a story because it became bigger than what you planned or you just wanted to write something different, a change is needed. Like, logically, I can sorta understand but as a fan of the series, I'm all RAGE ARGH WHY GRRR! XD
He did write other stuff between the SA books. Some of them are SUPER BAD. That Brad series of his is HORRIBLE. I tried it out in ebook & audio. It's just BAD. Like what I expect from a newb writer that doesn't want to actually develop a story with well placed words. XD Basic wordsmithing. Sheesh
By the end of the last book, it seemed like Wong didn't like the main character anymore and didn't want to write more within that character's POV/world. If true, that's sad. John Lee was a fun MC and I liked his complex character build. Oh well.
Wrote my first mini-review for System Finale. Sorta started The Wandering Inn: Book 6 - The General of Izril.
I started several audiobooks & none of them made me think, yah, let's go with this.

#4 must be when E is fired up with a new project or "fun". XD
It's not too much of a teaser. All of these characters are already out by..."
Huh, I totally don't remember 3, 7, or 8. But that's what rereads are for!

LOL - Classic Win to the core. XD
The combo of the narrator & words are great. Stuff that may make me groan in another story works in this one. It's like what you could get if you mix up Murderbot, Pendergast & Sherlock. XD

Ooooh intriguing!
I mean, when I went to the website, Overdrive had you install the Libby app to read... so i don't see what the change is, really...
But I'm not really a user... just a browser...
I stick to my at-my-own-control apps, for getting books...

Easiest way to explain is having a cleaner & info easy reading layout for the Book Detail page on GR & then forced to take the new "touch" interface layout that forces you to scroll for info.
Same deal. Plus, some of the things I could do in Overdrive, I can't do in Libby. Gotta "click" on extra crap to borrow books, join the hold line for a book, or add a book to a list like "TBR". It makes stuff that I could easily do before take 2x more time to search, borrow, put on hold, etc
Like with the new GR Book detail page, why do I have to scroll down almost 2 screen worth to get to MY OWN REVIEW for the book? XD
So dumb.
The Golden Enclaves <== Went on Libby to put a hold on this book. I've read #1 & 2 via library loan. So, I figured I'd continue that. I like the story, but not enough to buy them. XD
I actually checkout most of my books on Hoopla from my PC/Browser... then I go into the app and download to device so I can listen outside of wifi... rarely do I search/borrow from the app, unless I decide to do it from work, or it's the end of the month and I forgot to use all my credits and it might be too later after work...

Made me think about book expectations & the mental adjustments we make for the stories we read. I don't sit down & think about my filters & expectations for books on a book to book basis, but it's cool to see how I'll not care about certain mistakes in one book & rage about the same type of mistake in another.

Ah, for the library loans, I use the apps. For KU & Audible, I use the website unless it's the next book in series & then I may use app. Well, that's mostly on Audible. KU app gets bogged down with too many "curated for user" aspects and the fact that I like a wide variety of books. I don't like waiting for the "loading all the curated sections, let's read your whole device" part too much. XD

So true this... and having joined BR, I've definitely noticed how much those expectations and adjustments happen as part of book group mentality... I am personally a very swayable being...
Junkyard War came out in December and is on Audible Plus, so I checked that out... I really like this novella series from Faith Hunter...
It's post-apocalyptic, with a nanotech/virus that can turn people into an anthive heirarchy... the MC has the nanos to be an Ant Queen, but tries to not use it... a bunch of cats have it too... makes them super smart, and I think they have a bit of a telepathic link to the MC?
For some reason, the first and third book are on Audible Plus, but the 2nd isn't anymore... altho, I got the first book, back when Audible offered 1 of 6 options free each month...

Swayable Being is Iain's new Nickname
Sorta started Ink & Bone. It should hold my attention better than it does, but I think I was hoping for a 3rd book in a row to go on fav list & I doubt Ink & Bone will be that.
So I sidestepped to Netflix & started watching Alice in Wonderland S2. XD

You haven't even seen the new Dark Hunter megaverse thread I just set up, because of Choko & Shaitarn in the BR Planning thread... that's another crazy series I'm revisiting because of Choko...
For the most part, I'm all booked up for 2023, except for what I find time to sneak in...
For 2024, the only thing I still want to try and get people around here to read is Agatha H and the Airship City series... or Johannes Cabal the Necromancer... but I know others have plans for Vorkosigan Saga and something else, I think...
Personally, I plan to get serious about Discworld in 2024, the way I am with Malazan BotF this year... I also need to finish my Marla Mason re-read with Choko (#6-10)...

Sounds like a plan... perfect timing, with In Death and maybe Dark Hunter wrapping up :D
I've kinda gone overboard this month, with Penric & other stuff... I have like 40 BRs in 28 days... the only redeeming factor is that 15+ of them are under 6hrs... 9 of the Penric books, Sisters Grimm, Chronicles of Amber, Interlude in Death, Lesser Devil, Equoid, My Name is Lydia, etc...

That's how it goes, lol... all personal plans become group plans :D
I'm probably planning 2 books per month... ish... there's 42 books + a bunch of short stories in A Blink of the Screen: Collected Shorter Fiction, The Folklore of Discworld, and then The Science of Discworld + The Globe + Darwin's Watch + Judgement Day (altho these science books are more of a look at the real world, through the lens of Discworld)...
Even at 2 books a month it'll be 2 years to complete, basically... they're short to medium length tho, so I think it's a fine plan?...

There's really only 2 ways to go, around here... plan nothing or plan almost everything... trying to thread the needle of the in-between leads to more and more planning (for me, anyway)... until you decide to drop everything and plan nothing for awhile...

I'm in for Discworld. But the question is--how to organize the read?

When ya think about it that way, it's right up your alley.
I've had to go back & edit my notes/reviews a few times already. LOL the way stuff goes in your head and doesn't necessarily come out to the page. XD

LOL I guess that's true. I just prefer my life slices with DRAGONS.
I totally know what you mean about having to edit responses all the time...

I'm planning to read in publication order... I had thoughts of doing a sub-series / character order, the first time I read Color of Magic, but I abandoned that the 2nd time I read it... this'll be my 3rd time, and dedicated push to read the series... (I've just constantly been more focused on other things)...
As much work as it'll be, I think we should make a ton of threads, and not try to do a single thread... maybe we could make monthly threads, and have each thread be for 2 books, and have a single thread for the Folktales & Science books, and read the short stories from the anthology chronologically in whichever monthly thread makes sense... ends up being 21-22 threads instead of 46ish...

What Soo said... I mean, Wizard's Butler is pretty much a contemporary slice of life story, with a veneer of UF/Fantasy...
Quarter Share was contemporary slice of life, in space... coffee making and trade negotiations...

For those who enjoy Joe Ledger, if you haven't watched Alice in Borderland, you should.
2 Seasons of 8 episodes on Netlfix
Almost done with S2 & I gotta say that the plot progression for S2 is one of the best I've seen in ages. Especially when you have multiple characters.

Intro:
- Never would have guessed that's how Coben would sound. XD
- He has TERRIBLE taste in jokes but still kinda funny cause of how he did it. Which is like 1/3 of the intro.
- Sample is worth listening to just for the bad puns & glimpses of what Coben thinks of the writers that wrote the stories.
I put it on Audible Wishlist. It'll prob go on sale at some point & I'll get it then. Or maybe library?
Turns out the library card I had for Hoopla is expired again. Don't feel like jumping hoops to renew it, so no more Hoopla for me. Kinda sucks cause they have the audiobooks I wanna listen to. XD
From that library, I could only borrow 10 per month. So that's not that ideal. At least with Libby & that library, it's 10 loans at a time.

Yes I love that show! Almost finished with S2.. Although I have a bad habit of stop watching shows in the middle of a season for no reason lol

Some days I feel like there should be a support group for this...

Must have been yesterdays. LoL
Don't even recognize the one for today. XD
Keeping eye on Dailies is a good way to sorta know what the sales will be like over the year.
We be audiobook addicts. XD
