Vagabond Treehouse (2023) [Beware of Chicken 3 - December 4th]

The Wizard's Butler! Iain hooked us all on that in the last two months. It's slice of life/cozy fantasy that was highly enjoyable. Plus Sanderson's secret projects :) The first one is Tress of the Emerald Sea, is a bit more YA and inspired by The Princess Bride.

My enjoyment went downhill when they did the time jump where he spent 5 years in a hell planet... came back and they went to other planets... I've read book 7 twice and maybe 8 once, and haven't made it further...
I still like Ilona Andrews, but I had a feeling you didn't... mentioned anyway...
Everyone around here liked The Wizard's Butler as a slice of life book recommended by Audible (thru me, it recommended to me in app)... I and Nirkatze and maybe 2 other read 2 of his sci-fi books for free before they left Audible Plus mid-December... i liked them, Nirkatze found the romance wish-fulfillment near the end of book 2 over the top... I plan to continue eventually... they were basically slice of life in space, with lots of coffee and space trading... Quarter Share
We did Kaiju around the time it released, last March/April, i think... looking forward to Starter Villain (recently pushed from June to September)...
We also liked Orlando People / Dade County Death Cruise, from the writer of Andrea Vernon and the Corporation for UltraHuman Protection
Got 1-2 of the peeps around here to read Tarot Sequence, and they loved it... did the entire first trilogy... I think you're a fan, already?... The Last Sun / The Hanged Man / The Hourglass Throne... The Eidolon should be next, about the kids during book 3, before the next trilogy starts...
Brian & Emily read Reunion (new Christopher Farnsworth book) around September... I haven't had time, and there's still no audio, yet...
I got these guys reading some Craig Schaefer, starting over the summer... read Any Minor World, Ghosts of Gotham, and A Time for Witches so far... going to be reading The Hungry Dreaming sometime soon... second story with Hungry Dreaming characters should be coming sooner than later... it's released in chapters in newsletter, or through Patreon, I forget...

Yes, we did Kaiju when it released last year. We all enjoyed it. It was a fun pop song of a book :D Wil Wheaton's narration is perfect for Scalzi too. He has a new one later this year we're all looking forward to, Starter Villain.

Tarot Sequence #3 is on my listen to soon list. =D

OH that's good news too! Maybe I'll hold off on read Cradle for later. It's become a habit to re-read whole series when the new book comes out for certain series. Cradle is one of those for me. I may have to hold off on that since I'm behind on books now. XD

OH that..."
I was debating rereading Dreadgod right before Waybound too.

Oh yea... I left that off my long list... we were around book 3-4, last March, and have mostly succeeded in reading 1 per month... Katie bowed out in the middle (the original requester), and Narilka joined when we caught up to where she left off, back in September... we recently scheduled the reset of the books & Brief Cases, to finish in June/July (including The Law & the Toot-Toot / Mister the cat story that just came out in Heroic Hearts)

Whenever I stopped updating/posting in 2022 is pretty much when I stopped reading. So, I'm playing catch up now. XD

I'm not sure if any of us have read past 3?... the consensus seemed to be that 4-6 weren't looking as good as 1-3 or even the Small Medium spinoff...

Just finished Implode and it was much better than #7. Implode was much more like what I would expect to find in a Completionist story. Renewed my faith that the series will go back on track & be awesome. Krout was supposed to release a whole bunch of books in a row last year. It looks like only 3 of the 6 have been published. I'm gonna guess that sales have not been as good after a point cause the writing has overall plot has not been as tight as before.

Ooooohhh ill have to get that one!!

You are psychic :D Threadbare 4-6 are published. Threadbare #6's audio I think is delayed until Summer-ish, I'd have to go look back at that date. I scanned reviews of #6 and it states that it ties up 3 series - Threadbare, Small Medium, and
Maybe I should/will find time somewhere to read those extra series, then... i think I paused my re-read after Threadbare 3 last year or the year before, and didn't re-do small medium or start blasphemy...

I'm not as interested in the side stories. I think I have Blasphemy 1 or was waiting for it all to be out before getting it. Gotta check
Beware of Chicken: A Xianxia Cultivation Novel - Liked the cover, Travis Baldree is solid narrator & summary sounded fun. Reviews seemed ok for the type of story. About quarter into the book & it's a nice slice of life/cultivation romp.
Finally caught up, for the first time in weeks... just got 2 tomes & an In Death book to read, in the next 11 days, then 3-4 new releases, on the last day of the month, then an avalanche of BRs on February 1st...

I finished up Small Medium #1 and enjoyed it. I'm still deciding on how I feel about adding (view spoiler) to the universe. It was fun to get to know Chase. I'm interested to see how being an Oracle is going to play out in the next two books.

Free! No planning for me this year. Well, minor planning for personal use but that's about it. I kinda miss having the tracker, but also not dying to set it up for this year.
No clues about New Releases & that's sorta freeing too. It's nice to have a plan to follow. It's also nice to not have a plan. Enjoying both aspects in the moment. =D

It's understandable... if you burned out, doing so many BRs early last year, freedom is key to continued enjoyment... if we do BRs, it can just be people tagging along with books you happen to be reading that don't require reading previous books...
I don't think we have too many thread BRs planned this year, other than me & Brian's new release thrillers and Hungry Dreaming... we're otherwise overbooked until at least the summer, I think...
I slowly went overboard, from September to December, signing up and setting up series BRs... the main upside, is the group is more active than it's been since 2019ish, I think... the competition participation is an all time low, tho...
ALSO.. me and Yanique replaced Scott & Margret as Team Captains, and renamed out teams to Wandering Inn adventuring parties :D
I'm Horns of Hammerad & Yanique is Silver Swords... the two Byres family teams :D (we both came up with a list of possible names and let our team vote)

You mean the planned stuff that isn't starting until summer, but half the stuff we're doing monthly now won't be done yet? So doing more will only make matters worse?...
I think some of my stuff should end by June/July, but not much...

BRs, as I currently have them listed (some are guesses and some are me assigning dates to short stories halfway between novels:
January -- 24 complete, 31 total (7 Finished / New Releases, 1 Short Story)
February -- 25 (1 Addition. 3 New Releases, 6 Short Stories)
March -- 24 (4 New Releases, 4 Short Stories)
April -- 23 (3 New Releases, 4 Short Stories)
May -- 24 (1 Newest Release, 8 Short Stories)
June -- 22 (4 New Releases, 4 Short Stories)
July -- 15 (1 Short Story)
August -- 17 (4 New Releases, 3 Short Stories)
September -- 10 (3 New Releases)
October -- 11 (4 New Releases)
November -- 6
December -- 4 (2 New Releases)
I used New Release to also just mean Newest Release or End of Series / Up-to-date, here... it does a decent job of showing how things slow down over the summer, and REALLY slow down by October...
I'm probably done signing up for stuff for the year... but I also know I'm missing new releases I plan to read, like the Benedict Jacka one and probably some Martha Wells / etc...

I think Wells is doing both: Witch King in May & System Collapse in November
Jacka is doing An Inheritance of Magic in October... there's an FAQ on his website about how it's different and similar to Alex Verus... from what I remember, the character starts at age 17... making money is more important to the series... anyone can gain magic, but it's tied to artifacts, so money is power...

The easiest for me to abandon, would probably be Sisters Grimm & Chronicles of Amber... but they're also super short, so I don't think I really need to... we'll also see how Sun Eater goes, but that also ends in May, so it's not a super long commitment...

Waaa! Soo is back! Huzzah!!! Welcome back!

I think my favorite read from last year was Legends & Lattes... dittoing Tress of the Emerald Sea vote and also really enjoying the Children of Time series read right now...
Really glad to have you back Soo!! I really appreciated all of your insights and recommendations last year.

Chronicles of Amber is WAY better than Sun Eater. I've re-read Amber several times & bought the huge collected paperback a few times.
I read Sun Eater as a BR & I ended up ranting a lot about the story with the BR pal. lol
Which was a bummer cause there are not a lot of "new" epic SF series.
Currently listening to The Method. I hope it ends as well as it's progressing! Be a good short for Mystery Club.
Made my 2023 New Release list, in the challenge thread... nearly 40 books this year...
@Soo: there's the final New Management book, coming in December... Season of Skulls
And the next Joe Ledger book in August... looks like Bible Magic is involved?: Cave 13... feels like it's trying to make the link between Joe Ledger & Kagen the Damned a bit more clear?...
New Vlad Taltos in April: Tsalmoth... set before Jhereg, during the time of Vlad & what's-her-face's wedding...

@Emily: Started listening to Minor Mage a few hours ago... almost done... I think that counts as a Buddy Read... been less than 2 weeks since you read it (barely)...
I'm liking this one less than A Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking... the questing nature of the story reminds me of Nettle & Bone, a bit... and/or the early Perrin Chapters in The Eye of the World, when he goes off through the woods, gets captured by Whitecloaks, and finds out he's wolf-natured... or Daughter of the Forest, another questing book...

I didn't read #2 of the New Management. Need to read that first. Gotta see if I can get from library. =D
The Method - Very good setup & ok ending. A nice thriller-ish story to toss in between LitRPGs. Most of the LitRPGS are read by the same narrators. I wanted to throw in a different voice betwen the tomes. =)
The full cast narration was well done! Good audio-drama.

Rise of the Demon finally came out a few months ago, after years of delays... 8th book came out 6-7 years ago...
This is the finale, and a series I stopped really enjoying a long time ago... I stuck with it for the pretty unique plot arc (kinda like the Fever series, where the apocalypse happens in the middle)... kind of a hate-read, lol...
Audio also released a few weeks after the rest, so I'll read it at some point...
I rated the series 4/4/3/3/3/4/3/3/4 -- not sure how accurate the ratings are in hindsight, but that 4 in the middle was a short story, not a full length novel...

I've got Kagen. Ya'll read The Kaiju Preservation Society?
I had Upgrade on Wishlist. May bump that to buy list.
Not interested in IA. Sadly, they're not writing much I want to read. I think they need to go into a whole different kind of Fantasy to spark their writing. The storylines are repeating & character development is a lumpy process.
I watched a bunch of CDramas, a handful of KDramas & JDramas. I can sort of catch up on Korean & Japanese shows but I'll prob never catch up on Chinese stuff cause there's a lot out there. Only did a little bit of reading & it was either Moonlight Sculptor LN or other LNs that the shows were based on.
Currently reading Battle Through the Heavens LN. The CDrama for it was good. S2 will come out this year. BUT it ended in a manner that made me go, "WHAAAA?" So, I'm reading the LN. The story is good! Very different from the drama series. I'd say it's one of the better cultivation/fight stories I've read.
Oh, Great! I Discovered How to Cultivate a Farmer in 52 Easy Steps - Just finished that. It's a solid follow up to #1. Transition piece. Author decided to flesh out the setting & characters. I think the 3rd book will be more of an exciting romp.
I know I'm going to dislike the end of System Apocalypse, but I'll prob try to get that done sooner vs later. No audiobook for it has come out. May not come out at all. Looks like most people did not enjoy the last book. XD
