Vagabond Treehouse (2023) [Beware of Chicken 3 - December 4th]
So much of the plot of the book is pretty mundane, but super pleasant to listen to... learning to cook, healing from his wartime and nurse issues, installing internet, visiting a doctor... and it's fun watching the MC go from humoring his boss, to believing him...

I wouldn't say the 2 incidents are unconnected... house groaning is the house settling on it foundations (probably unevenly)... so it probably helped nudge the precarious book over...

Narilka, I have been fascinated with chemistry, biology and physics most of my life and those are the reasons that make me want to understand everything and how things work... The weird thing is, I was always a believer wannabe, and as a teenager some horrible things happen, and I kind of gave up on believing in any spiritual anything... Then I started college and when I really got into biology and physics, I discovered that as much as we know, we don't know at least double that. The animal cell, one of the most studied building blocks of life, and there are still parts in it we have no idea what they do, but we know without them, the cell doesn't work... And then I started truly believing in a higher power, or levels of life, or cosmic consciousness, or whatever you want to call it. For me science made it possible to believe in more, instead of what The Church, as an institution, has been trying to convince us that science is attempting to deny G-d... I actually think of it as proof of that which is more than just us...

You might want to check out the book E-Squared: Nine Do-It-Yourself Energy Experiments That Prove Your Thoughts Create Your Reality for some easy to try quantum experiments at home. If you do, I'd be interested to hear about your experiences.

Same here Choko!

See, Emily, it seems many of us are just greedy for knowledge and understanding, with both feet planted in the ground, but we want to let go at times and make-believe:)))

Just finished and it was a lot of fun! I liked the slice of life aspects--but I also like that this had more conflict that the Quarter Share books etc, with the curse and the grasping niece. Actually reminded me a lot of Legends & Lattes--which makes sense, since it is a similar slice-of-life low-stakes genre.
@Choko--I'm very curious now what you liked in Naomi. I found her a very satisfying villainess, but I can't say I sympathized with her at all, just enjoyed watching her downfall. :)
@Iain--if you plan to read White Trash Warlock let me know... I think I'll start Ship of Magic in the meanwhile...

Just took a look at that book description--loved your review, btw, Narilka--and I just really liked the book description. Nice and positive view of the universe.

Next year is mostly the year of the Secret Projects, as expected. Defiant is pushing to November (GR's had a March release date). Stormlight 5 is expected Nov 2024, which means I'll be all over a series read in 2024 to prep :) Looks like Janci is going to do some Skyward sequels. And some cool stuff movie and video games he still can't talk about. More confirmation about Mistborn Era 3 after Stormlight 5.
It was nice of him to let other departments in Dragonsteel give updates. I personally am both happy and sad to see that take off. It's great for his brand and business, just less time for him to write.
Anyway, for those interested, here's the link: https://www.brandonsanderson.com/stat...

Aww, thanks for that Nirkatze.

Idk, a growing business might be a good thing? More people to take care of the non-writing stuff? I suppose he'd still have decisions to make though..

I was just thinking as I was reading through his SotS, that it's almost like his book writing process has become similar to a TV series writing process--like he's the head writer in the writer's room, and they throw ideas around, and then delegate responsibility...
I guess only time will tell if the business expansion will affect writing time--I feel like I can trust Sanderson more than any other author to know the exact percentages of effectiveness and to make adjustments as necessary...
Excited to download my audio & ebooks on Jan 1 though!! Gods there's like six BRs I want to join starting Jan 1... why oh why do I do this to myself...

Started my re-read of Fire Touched... since I needed something that required basically no mental attention to follow, while sick and tired...
I felt a bit better at work today, but the place was falling apart, honestly... it's almost funny...
We got hit with that big storm front yesterday and today... few inches of snow, then -8F temperatures, with -32F wind chill... windshield wiper prep and powdery snow made getting my car drive-ready pretty easy at 3am, after I put on 10 layers of clothes... but my car took a bit longer than usual to turn over and start... and then, I got to work, and they'd been having power issues since 10pm... something went screwy, and we were only getting half power, but enough power to not trigger the backup power... so some things worked, some didn't... heating didn't work... the draftier areas of the warehouse were 25F... main are was 50-60F... around 6am, the power company finally showed up to fix, and turned power off for 30 minutes to do so... that was fun... but the store was fully functional by the time it opened... but stock levels were low, since the inventory software was offline, making it hard to find things to stock...
Also, apparently, some pipes froze overnight... so around 10am, the Fire Suppression people were out, fixing that, and removing some panels so the pipes would be exposed to inside heat directly, in the future... but I guess that didn't go well, because at 11am, the fire alarm started going off... one of the frozen pipes burst, and set off the sprinklers, luckily in a very contained place (truck driver bathroom in the back corner of the store / receiving dock)... screeching alarm for 20 minutes, fire department, fun cleanup...
I showed up with my trusty spill square:

I was a riot :D (they recommend employees carry one of these around in a pocket, in case they come across a small spill somewhere... not really useful for 3 inches of flowing water...
That was my day... one disaster after another...

Wrong time of year for geese antics... and no frozen chicken projectiles, thankfully... otherwise just like St. Mary's :D

Oh goodness, that sounds awful! Lol yeah it really does sound like something from St. Mary's!
Even here in Texas we hit freezing temperatures which is suuuuper rare. I'm just glad there's no precipitation.. Last time we had these temps back in Feb '21 we lost power for 4 days (and I had to shelter at work for a day). Texas does NOT know what to do with an actual winter...

Ditto on Narilka--Merry Holidays and Happy Everything!
Ditto on Emily and am very happy to have the overbooking reading problems!
I'm going to be heading south for a week to visit friends. Looking forward to the warm weather y'all are having down there... ;) Seems like the lower 48 put its cold on just to welcome me...

It wasnt fun for sure! Haha
Luckily we had a gas fireplace which helped. But yeah i live in a warm state for a reason and im personally offended by the weather lol
APPARENTLY, things didn't let up at work, yesterday, just because I went home... the power company didn't encounter the same Phase fault issue that the managers did, so they didn't fix it, I guess... and a few hours after I left, power went out again, when the same phase blew out... and when power came back on, 2 rotisserie ovens and a curbside pickup storage refrigerator had blown out from the electrical overload/short...
Yea... we had a safety meeting about inclement weather, this morning :D

Well, you could always propose they change that...

I am determined to finish Malayan this year. A little scared to try it on audio just based on volume of characters and names. I think Gardens won't be too tough on audio since Ive read the paperback twice now.

This is everything I have written down for January... might be missing a few things, still...

I know you're missing Time Police #1, and whichever Mystery Book Club books you're doing (Manners & Monsters, Jack NIghtingale?, probably not Verity Kent since it's Darby author, new Alex Benedict?)

I'm fine with the 2nd or 3rd week of January, I think... but you can/should check with people in the Dresden thread, instead of the Vagabond thread :D
I just included it, and the rest of the series, in my list despite not being scheduled yet, to get an accurate-ish list of how overbooked I am... first of each month until it gets an official date...

I read a couple chapters of White Trash Warlock, a week or 2 ago when I found it...
But I managed to put it down and save it for Buddy Read material, when you all started showing interest, and return to my TBR pile of options, instead... I hadn't reached the main plot of the book yet, just the character intro sequence...

Speaking of BRs, I'm looking to follow through on the vague plans I made for us to read The Heretic Royal & The Hungry Dreaming... before New Year...
I think there's still time... for me anyway... if I read Jasmine Throne tomorrow...

Super Powereds: Year 1 is on the after-christmas 2-for-1-credit sale... anyone with any interest in superhero stories that hasn't read it should definitely pick it up...
Great series, and my intro to Drew Hayes, who we've discussed here in the past... Fred the Vampire, NPCs, Villains' Code, 5 minute Sherlock, etc...

Having decided to join the bandwagon and DNF Jasmine Throne because it wasn't gripping me and I stopped reading it for a week, I started Heretic Royal, and am having a great time...
So much confusion between the main characters of this series and the dragons & Annwyl that appeared at the end of the previous book, hellbent on freeing slaves and killing Beatrix...

Brian, I haven't seen the Strange Company, but I am good for reading it here with you guys... Eventually:)))
I'm loving the book... the ridiculousness keeps it interesting at all times...
My biggest question is whether this is to be a trilogy that's gonna resolve all of a sudden, or just another entry in the series...
Dragon Kin went on for 9 books, but you could say there are several trilogies/story arcs... Call of Crows was a trilogy, with plans for a 2nd trilogy eventually... Pride was also 9 books, and mostly just rambled... but Honey Badger Chronicles is a bit more focused, and just started telling stories with a 2nd family, related to the first family of Honey Badger sisters...
All this to say it could go either way... honestly, alot happened in that final Dragon Kin book, when Aiken/Laurenston decided to largely resolve everything and take a break, before this Scarred Earth series started...

Never mind... they're clearly setting up Isadora for a 4th book, probably called the Princess Royal... and the existence of many more siblings I've either never heard of before, or the author just hasn't focused on yet (I don't remember Isadora before now)... and I don't think Ainsley was focused on before book 2...
Finished Heretic Royal... it's a good thing I'm in it for the antics... I had to relisten to the ending 3-4x, it happened so fast (view spoiler)
The epilogues always do a good job setting up the next book... (view spoiler)

At work this morning, I was like "I'm gonna go home and do 200 book ratings/reviews today"... after 30 minutes and the month of February, I was like "I'm gonna do one month of book ratings/reviews per day for the next 10 days"
LOL... I just was NOT feeling it...
I have plans to set some weekly alarms next year, to try and kick myself in the butt to not fall more than a week behind... doing a handful of ratings/reviews/etc a week would be much less time consuming...

That's a deep question. Part of my coping mechanism during the pandemic ended up being researching quantum physics. I still don't understand a lot of it, not sure anyone does really. However it did remove my belief in coincidences - there are no coincidences. Everything has an explanation, even if we have no idea what it is. It changed my outlook on basically everything and my thought processes. Once that happened, I've had some strange experiences I can't ignore or easily explain. All this is to say that yes, I'm sure I'd believe, though I'd probably want to set up some mini experiments to test it out lol
