Vagabond Treehouse (2023) [Beware of Chicken 3 - December 4th]

Romy & Neri: Both of them are young with limited knowledge.
Neri is a young teen without that much education and roamed around like a little hoodlum. Plus fear from having magic, etc.
Romy had a terrible crap happen to her, but (view spoiler)
Within story context & what they know, it's not unusual to develop new patterns in known surroundings. Also, they're poor. Were you voting for Romy to go back to a whorehouse? That would have made money.
*playing devil's advocate* Woo~

I'd have to ditch my webnovels for a bit to read the book, but I'd do it. lol
Doesn't have to be soon, but should I add the book to the Vagabond TBR List?
Carol Berg / Cate Glass likes heaping pain on her characters... I haven't made much progress on the book, yet, but I read Transformation & Revelation last year... so much torment... couldn't do a 3rd one in a short time frame, still need to finish that trilogy...

I am done with Ch one, and I was not happy with the loan thugs at all... He just got into the new game... I am intrigued.

And yes the reader frustration is real xD
I'm about 20% in... I listened to the first 30 minutes at work, gave up on retaining info in fits and starts, and started over after work...
I just reached the point where Romy hired Neri to make a door/etc to try and make him more useful/reliable... up to this point, he could definitely use a good wolloping (I think I saw Choko say this about somebody recently :D)
Hopefully this improves his temperament...

If characters act too idiotic, it can ruin a book for me... I'm just too impotently annoyed to enjoy anything... when it's bad, I pause alot, and the book takes twice as long to finish...

So... is Illusion of Thieves (the title) describing an action the thieves are performing?... or is it a new, cooler, collective now... a group of thieves is called an illusion, instead of a pack?
I'm a fan of collective nouns...
An Argumentation of Historians
An Illusion of Thieves

I should've stopped that trilogy with book one, which I loved. The problem for me is that I grew more interested in Aleksander's story and what was going on with him but that was the stuff that was happening on the far peripheries of the story. I just wasn't that interested in Seyonne's search for the true history of his people.

We didn't set a date for the Lot Lands but I'm down whenever you wanna read it. I have a ? by the title for the BR. lol
This weekend?

Yay! You're reading it too. I've written several posts about the series. lol
So the books on GR, I think the page # is for the Korean version and not the translations. But the volume numbers do correlate.
If you're using the link I wrote for the story on Light Novel Pub, the Chapters are labeled with a Volume # and part 1.1/etc. So you can link the volumes on there to the volumes on GR. I'm reading it on a different website, but the volumes are the same.
Lee Hyun/Weed's background is given in pieces during the series. He had it really tough! Which are good reasons for why he turned out the way he did. lol

Answer it towards where Julian is now in the book.
Julian, I HOPE there's more info in the next book! I totally wanna know more about the magic and have more heists.

I seem to have reached the main heist-y section of the story, with (view spoiler)
The sibling issues seem to have resolved themselves handily... as a result, this story feels much more pleasant/forgiving than Rai-Kirah (@Veronica)
I also have a soft spot for heist stories... The Palace Job was great on KU... The Lies of Locke Lamora series started great... The Quantum Thief made my head hurt a bit, but I just rolled with it... The Quantum Magician had promise and the group-assembling aspect I usually like...

Julian, Romy's (view spoiler)

He's very driven, isn't he? =D
The translations are well done for the first volume and then the quality is iffy after that but still readable.
Are you in Volume 1? Like Vol1.3? That would be 3rd chapter of Vol1. I know this can get a bit confusing. lol

I feel like I wasted time on the pseduo wannabe SF/Fantasy/LitRPG book that was on Audible Plus. Oh well, I couldn't stay on the Good to Awesome streak forever. lol

Hopefully, you'll feel like I did. Intrigued, grossed out, annoyed and then intrigued. lol
Plus, we can all count it as a BR book! =D

Lee Hyun is a different character to cheer for, right? He's super cranky, miserly, obstinate and proud. Yet, I can't dislike him because there's a reason for the way he is, and he's not actually a bad guy. Selfish in motivations, but motivated to be selfish for his small family.

I'm not as excited about him selling books/etc on his website. I went to check it out today and it's not very good. lol I wonder if I should send him a note saying that?

I loved the last chapter, I wish that we had had more tense moments like the ending. They left the door wide open for book #2 with this!
Some more thoughts:
(view spoiler)

Sniffers: Creepy right?!?! Like the thoughts Romy had about them. Enslaved and gelded. Eek
I thought the author did a grand job of making the opening a jam packed opener, lulled with angst for the middle and ended with a steep rise and landed a solid conclusion.
I'm in to read the next book. =D

I’ll join you for book 2! I want more world building, they also mentioned something about an underwater city. You can’t just throw casual mention of things like this and not go into detail about it. That’s torture to me lol since those are usually the details that capture my attention the most a lot of times.

Whatcha reading and why's it terrifying?
I called Illusion of Thieves heisty... but it might be more accurate to call it reverse-heisty... cons jobs with heist elements... reminds me of the show Leverage... a show I loved... I only made it halfway through on my rewatch... and watched a few episodes of the the revival with Noah Wyle... need to finish both, sometime...

Regarding the many kids thing I think thats a common thing in history having a lot of kids even though its expensive to have kids. Depending on what setting/how advanced science is, etc. the mortality rate for kids is super high so people would have a lot to ensure they'd have some survive to adulthood. Big generalization here, and I'm sure there are other nuances.
But holy shit selling your kid to a whorehouse has me raging at the mom. Loved how the description of her mom (at 40!) was an old crone. lol no love lost there.
Romy so far has a really good heart. Can't bargain with the poorer people bc she feels bad.
Also, yes to the Italian vibes.

Ok, enough on that tangent. I know about families being big, etc for that time period, but modern questioning can't be stalled. lol

I listened to most of Highfire and it just wasn't funny. Like, I could see the author trying to write smart and stupid humor blend into a 'quirky' story. It just sounded dumb to me.
You can't leave reviews or notes on GR without tagging the book as Want to Read or Read. I put it back as a Want to Read. That way my book update note will stay in place and I know that I didn't enjoy my attempts to read the book.

Go to your bookshelves... click the edit button at the top of the My Shelves list... create a new shelf called "Never Want To Read" or something... make it exclusive... now it's another top shelf option that is exclusive like "Want To Read", "Currently Reading" and "Read"... that's how I made a bunch of genre-specific TBR shelves years ago...

I don't generally have a hard rule about books. I like that I leave some room for change, etc. Like, I didn't think I'd re-read the Dark Tower series, and I'm glad I did it with audiobooks. I'm satisfied with that and won't touch it again. Though, I'm looking forward to reading all the other work by Stephen King.
I read Malazan to the end to see what the hype was about. There's a lot to like and a lot to dislike in that series. Also, it ended in a similar vein as King's Dark Tower. Which makes it another series I don't want to re-read, because the ending influences whether or not it's worth re-reading.
Cradle & Wandering Inn are not as well crafted work like Malazan or Dark Tower, but I'm charmed by the process of the series and look forward to where it goes. More than likely, I won't re-read them as much once I'm done. lol
At some point, we need to finish S - Ship of Theasus. LoL

@Emily they don't really go into too many details but the main reason they're against magic is because they claim it came from Dragonis

Thus far, it seems like magic is the boogeyman that's hushed and controlled, but no one knows why.

Woo! My library has it.
Julian, do you want to count Hot Zone as BR? I can get it and read it now.
ETA: Eh, the audiobook is abridged. Bah! Still gonna give it a listen, but prefer unabridged.

The entire dojo of swordsman entered the game in Vol3. I've been waiting for them to meet up with Weed/Hyun and see what'll happen.
In Vol5 now, the Master & his main assistant swordsman instructors finally meet up with Weed & some of his other friends. The plan was to go hunting for experience. It'll be the first time the Swordnoobs (hahah I think it's a silly translation spin but accurate) fight with Weed.
For a variety of reasons, Weed trained in several craft skills and all of them buff up his stats. He has a routine he does to hunt. Food, gear, magic buffs and ready to roll until all other players wish for death to get a break from Weed's crazy hunting. lol
Well --- no hunting happened cause the Swordnoob's were floored by the tasty food Weed made. The Master asked Weed for alcohol. Weed did have several that he's made but hoarding. He gives in and hands out the bottles. Drunk party! Negative affects, hallucinations and seeing stars in the sun shine skies. LOL
Weed ends up having to fight the mobs by himself. He's getting run down by the endless mob waves. He's like, I didn't want to do this but I have to give it my best!
Pulls out seasonings and starts throwing salt on open wounds, soy sauce on cuts, hot pepper into eyes, etc.
I have to say, this may be the first LitRPG that used seasonings in a mob battle.
