We've been going through The Chronicles of St. Mary's in this thread, and some random reads Iain entices us with xD
I'm gonna need something different soon to read! Anything you've been wanting to try?

But I tried to stick to things I could only get from audible (which is really annoying when I can't get them from the library)

Me too Julian! I'm trying to get back into commenting properly again. Hi people! I just read the backlog. I'm hoping to get caught up with St. Mary's & y'all this week--we'll see how that goes. I did take a little break and read Rich Man's Fight a few days ago and loved it.
@Choko & Emily--I too just spent an outrageous amount of money on the sale this week, and now I feel better knowing I am in good company. :) I cleaned out my wishlist, then went through my Library and looked for unfinished series... would have spent more if I came here to check Iain's rec's list in time. :) Too late now! I picked up the Marla Mason books and the Tarot Sequence books, among a crapton of others.
Rich Man's War--the Presidental Address in the middle, (view spoiler)
Right now I'm starting the Nona BR on audio--first BR I've been on time for in about two months--and @Choko I just made it past the prologue (100 pages!!!) for Knife of Dreams. I'm almost there! Will be commenting soon. Been trying to keep an audio, ebook, and physical book going lately but most of my physical books are still in storage while I finish the bookshelves...
Work is still eating my face and my life, but I'm starting to get used to it again.

that's fine! By the time Travis got around to asking whatsisname the funny guy who lost the arm--it wasn't potentially romantic anyway, I was just hoping for some funny laughs. And more Gunny.

For my audio line up, after Harry August I'm currently debating Nathaniel Cade 2 for October/Halloween, then a Space Team and then Small Medium. Maybe.

I've been wary of the new Threadbare trilogy... wasn't hearing good things... also haven't read Blasphemy Online, still, despite finally having audio, I think...

I hate hate hate Graphics Audio, so never have much good to say about it... the sound effects aren't my thing, and they cut so much content in the name of building an immersive experience...

Ofc it was good, I recommended it ;)

I thought the book did a great job of exploring the many ways people can choose to handle a Groundhog Life, as it were... time travel, the slow way...
But I can also see Soo's complaint, which was that the MC seemed immature from beginning to end, and didn't mature enough from his experiences, I think... or I just attributed something I read elsewhere to Soo... didn't check...

Seems like alot of people are planning varying levels of spooky BRs for the month of October...
I want to re-read A Night in the Lonesome October, since my first attempt was all jumbled (literally, I think the chapters were out of sequence)...
And, I want to use this time to try and lure you guys into reading Jonathan L. Howard... an author I enjoy that is severely lacking in published works...
There's Johannes Cabal the Necromancer, a 5 book series + anthology... complete series, altho there's some gender-bendy alt-material on Patreon now, I think...
And Carter & Lovecraft, a 2 book series about descendants of Lovecraft (author) and Carter (main character in Lovecraftian works) teaming up and realizing that the books aren't entirely fictional... it's a shame this is a series/premise owned by publisher, and they abandoned the series / fired Howard after only 2 books...

I'll avoid the Graphic Audio and stick to the regular Space Team books. Thanks Iain.
I too would like to read A Night in the Lonsome October. I just don't have a copy at the moment. August and September have been of topsy turvey for my regular life between work and some health issues for my husband. I think it's going to even out in October. If it does even out, I'll see if I can pick up a copy.
I've informally chosen Nona the Ninth, The President's Vampire and Someone Like Me as my spooky October books. I'll also be doing the Bands of Mourning BR and possibly Cradle 11 if I can fit it in. Husband just started Cradle 9 and I must stay ahead!

LOL Very true. Can always trust Iain for good recs to get the whole thread reading!
re: Graphic Audio--I've really enjoyed their Demon Cycle renditions. The full cast does a great job, and I didn't notice that the sound effects took away anything. Then again, I am not a connoisseur of audio--as a newbie I found it very easy to listen to, which was nice. I have trouble focusing still, sometimes.
re: Jonathan L. Howard--I've heard of Johannes Cabal and I think I have a copy in some format somewhere lying around for my tbr...
@Choko: St. Mary's #10 is a very memorable entry for me... half done with my re-read... (view spoiler)
Graphic audio is a big no for me. I don’t do much audio anyway and when I do, I want no extra bells and whistles 😂

At first I read that as no big deal, lol... changes the whole sentence... definitely agree... I'm super sad that Graphics audio is the only audio option for the Golgotha series: The Six-Gun Tarot
The first book got regular audio, but I guess wasn't successful enough to continue by the original publisher... the series has 4-5 books now, and they're technically in the same world as almost all other RS Belcher series, just 150+ years earlier, in the Old West...

Ok! Probably in November is my best guess. I'm on Space Team #4. I'll keep you updated :)
Updated my spreadsheet (still need to use accurate read dates and BR dates for the past few months, just set to today and October 31st for now, to get an idea of points)...
Once done, I'll only need to add October, basically before Halloween, which is nice... doing what I've done so far, took most of 4-6hrs (I started super early, this morning, while listening to St. Mary's #10)
EXCEPT, I'm also like 7-9 months behind on Goodreads tracking, I think... but that's probably for another day...

I just got to this part in The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August. I too like the term Linears :) I had no idea Kalachakra is from Buddhism. Now I need to learn more.
Yea... the contest has always run from New Years' to Halloween... leaves November and December for holiday activities, catching up on things, and resting in prep for New Years'...
Some people / some years, used it to clear out some series and make room to start new ones in January with an influx of Buddy Reads...

First day of a 4 day mini-vacation, and I've gone a long way to catching up on BRs... with A Deadly Education done and Nona the Ninth almost done...

The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August
Oh yeah, Ch 59 (view spoiler)
Chapter 62: This book is slow and plodding, at times, and prone to tangents and Interludes... but I'm coming to think it's quite brilliant.. I agree. I think it's brilliant. Such a neat thought experiment that's turned into a pretty great story. It's a thriller without the danger lol so weird but it works. (view spoiler)
Ch 66 (view spoiler)

I hope this doesn't end the 2-for-1 sales.
I'm going for a near record on my marathon reading, during my vacation...
A Deadly Education
Nona the Ninth
Magic Rises
The Last Graduate
Reading Magic Breaks now, then probably start The Golden Enclaves tomorrow...
Been on a real uptick, in general, lately, but usually I take more breaks and watch TV/movies, especially on days off...

Audible is have a 2-for-1-credit sale, so sales are still a thing... anything to make extra sales, I'm sure...

I really want to listen to The Martian but they switch narrators to Will Wheaton. I'm not sure Wheaton's snark is good for a hard science scifi. Has anyone tried his narration?
Mostly only all the Scalzi books he narrates, since they're friends... honestly, I could do without him, most of the time... he's not bad... just... I dunno... distinctive...

I think it's great that the Dispatcher series is marketed around using a different famous actor as the narrator instead... I think Zachary Quinto does a good job with them... and it's not Wheaton ;)
That world is probably too dark for Wheaton narration, honestly...

It’s a really cozy trilogy… already miss it… like you said, it’s a real easy comfort read, and they’re hard to search for…
It’s the same reason me and Laura love the pleasant duology in the middle of the Black Jewels series… relatively low stakes, slice of life stuff, etc…
The problem with most cozy series, is the MC acts Too Stupid To Live…
I’m thinking of trying the Aurora Teagarden series if I can find it… older Harris series, mostly from the 90s…

If anyone checks their front page of goodreads, instead of notifications, they might have seen me adding some books to my TBR last night (a rare occurrence)... was laying in bed watching booktubers, and got some good recs/news...
Most notably, Tchaikovsky has written a 3rd Children of Time book!!!
Children of Memory comes out in November... I'm not too surprised... the 2nd book's epilogue was screaming for a continuation...
Also a Portal Fantasy I hadn't heard of: The Border Keeper & Second Spear

Up to Ch. 9 and Fiji is showing she has some real power, not just the Wicca stuff that regular folks tend to do. And I am still wondering what Olive is, being so strong and badass. It can't be just the blood from her boyfriend...

I just finished Interior Chinatown--very quick listen, only 3 hours or so--and it was very thought provoking. I have two local book clubs this Friday, and that's one of them. The other one is Plain Bad Heroines which I just started today, 19 hours listen. It's a little hard to tell where it's going at the beginning, but the narrator is nice to listen to.
I think I watched Midnight, Texas, when it was a TV show. Only 1 or 2 seasons before cancelled though, I think. It was good background...
