It will mostly be a reread for me. I was reading back in 2018 and dropped it on book 9 (I know, just ridiculous) and now I have to start over to finally finish the series.
Right now my thoughts are just "Anomander Rake" so... lol

One of the best moments of the 3 books I read, so far, was when Kruppe and that other guy kinda like Kruppe met, I think it was at the end of the 3rd book... and the voices the narrator gave them helped...
Back to Tarot Sequence... I think it's one of my few successes with the Goodreads recommendation system, long after I'd worked through the top 100 Urban Fantasy / PNR books/series...
Most of my other random recommendation attempts haven't been nearly as successful...

Iain, are you talking about Iskaral Puss, Shadow Throne 's high priest, the one with the little flying monkeys following him around worshipping him? I absolutely adore him too!!! Really, the one part that absolutely traumatized me was in book 9.. And it really sucks now on re-read, because we just met the woman involved in it in book 3, and she is so full of life and vigor, and just knowing what will happen to her, I can't shake it off.... *trying really hard not to think about it!!!!*

I know I spent the past week praising the Tarot Sequence 1-2... but #3, The Hourglass Throne, was fucking amazing... packed with so many crazy plot developments, as the crescendo of the first trilogy... (view spoiler)
It was also full of foreshadowing and portents for the future of the series... hopefully the next book doesn't take 3 years to release... I don't really begrudge the 3 year gap betwee 2 & 3, between the pandemic, and the impressive quality... but if every book takes 3 years, it'll be 18 years before book 4-9 are done...

The books just have everything I'm looking for in Urban Fantasy / books...
Great magic, great plot, bit of romance is OK of any type, solid bromance, found family, tons of character moments, etc...

Oooh, I remember the folks in the Malazan BR warning about something like that... I imagine it must be the same thing...
@Iain, are you doing Tarot sequence on audio or physical?

I just found out the other day that the author is starting a companion series… can’t remember what it’s called, but it starts with Tarot… stories from other POVs… first up is called Eidolon, and fills in details that overlap with the 3rd book, from the POV of the kids… Quinn, Max, and at least one other you haven’t met yet… so they’re sticking around, and not baddies :D
I’m really excited for it, even tho I’m sure it’s not all going to be rainbows and ponies…

Finally been doing Poor Man's Fight #4... much more in the mood for it now, versus a few weeks ago... and it feels so short... I'm already 75% done... Wong hasn't had much time to grapple with her turmoil over the Intelligence guys' orders...

(view spoiler)
Really like the characters though, and you're right about all the things good Urban fantasy has!

Like I said before, the series is planned as 3 trilogies... this first trilogy gives us most all of the details we'd want/need about Rune's backstory (the things he's keeping secret from the reader)...
The second trilogy will give details on his future / the prophecies (things being kept secret from Rune)...
And the third trilogy is The Endgame, where everything setup will play out...
I'm very excited for it all... this is the author's main writing credits, to date, and he only gets better at pacing and plotting as the trilogy progresses, in my opinion (and I don't usually note things like that)...

Elliott Kay's new sci-fi harem series started this week... nearly 500 pages... available on Kindle Unlimited... no audio, yet: https://www.amazon.com/Hot-Restart-El...
When I heard it was a cross between the Poor Man's Fight series and the Good Intentions series, it wasn't kidding... looks like a similar premise... down on his luck kid decides to help a damsel, and gets more than he bargained for...
In Good Intentions, he ends up in a dominant role to an angel and a demon, when he interrupts a cult ritual binding...
In Hot Restart, he frees an Artificial Intelligence in a human body from stasis / captivity...

But yay more things to add!

I really like the setup of this, and I think I've been more in the sci/fi mood rather than fantasy.
Also about half way through The Hanged Man on audio (view spoiler)

Really wish this was on audio so I didn't have to keep taking breaks!

I just finished A Soldier 's duty yesterday and started the next one right away. I like Ia and I love the set up of that world! I feel exactly the way you do, Emily. Right now I am in more of a Sci-fi mood and I can't get enough... I also wish it was on audio, because I can't read my Kindle while driving:((((( And I drive pretty much all day.
I am on the 10th book of Wheel of Time, so I can at least listen to that during the day...
We are doing the next St. Mary's this Monday, Right?

Good Intentions: be warned, the first book was written primarily as erotica, so every chapter has sex, basically, and explicitly (and published online on literotica, I think)... the later books are much better at balancing plot and romance, as they were all written a bit later, after the first book was repackaged and sold semi-traditionally...
Hot Restart: I went ahead and started reading the ebook, and kinda read 75-80% already... and I think it's pretty great... there's a fair bit of sex, but the 2 main characters don't even meet until 10% in, because there's a fair bit of setup...
The amorphous gel creature sex was interesting, to say the least... but mostly, because I couldn't quit thinking of Splurt from Space Team :D
And the "shameless monetization and appropriation of human culture" warned of in the blurb... when the MCs visit O’Humans Tavern SportsPub LoungeGrill and Bar and Teahouse Poolhall, an alien bar catering to humans... the MC gets a triple corndog burger... more specifically, three jalapeno-buffalo-wing-fried mozzarella chicken tender pretzel-peanut hot dogs on a pizza-flavored hamburger bun...
Soldier's Duty: Hell Week is definitely a high point of the early book... the moments when her precognition doesn't work tend to do that to her... she's a bit high-strung with threats to her future...
Glad to see you guys' liking the books, tho... I'm still partway through my re-read of book 3, I think... my ereading comes and goes... and sometimes it just jumps to other books on a whim...
St. Mary's: the plan works for me... I have some short stories loaded up, and the next main entry on our list...

I try to read a bit before bed, but it usually puts me right to sleep.. So a good thing and a bad thing I guess xD
Would love to get back into St. Mary's! We're a bit more than halfway I believe at this point? I think next up isChristmas Past the short and An Argumentation of Historians?

Definitely a great trilogy with more to come… Eidolon is next, explaining what happened to them during captivity…

I still need to check out his other stuff, but the Nathaniel Cade vampire agent series was great on Hoopla...
...and I just looked up Reunion and it looks and sounds awesome... the cover is giving me big Cthulhu vibes... and the blurb is all Buffy, 20 year class reunion tour... double awesome...
Everyone else should try and get this book... it's standalone, unless it leaves itself open for a series, at the end... :D

My reading has slowed to a crawl since work started up again a week and a half ago--I want to jump back in to St. Mary's but I might be somewhat lagging behind.
Hugs all around!

No worries, we stalled at #8 for a bit which I think you've read already... Just starting #9 now, and I don't think we'll continue at our early summer pace ;)

I started St. Mary's #9... Only about 15% in, but I feel like she has purposely begun with a ton of humor, which makes me nervous that she might be preparing us for some tragedy and hardships for the rest of the book.
Up to where The Idiot who has to go got back to work. I have been laughing out loud like a crazy person at so many points, I can't even begin to count them all.. However, the picture of Markham ringing a bell and calling "Unclean, Unclean!!!" Infront of The Idiot, just had me in stitches!!! And the chicken!!! And I just love the whole group of regulars in St. Mary's!
There was again that Time Travel paradox with what caused what, when it came to Henry VIII's accident and those always catch at me a bit... But it is what it is...
Also, the Time Police and Max's plan sounds like a disaster waiting to happen...
