Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments I agree, Nirkatze. Totally diabolical! Thank goodness for the time police, and I never thought I would say that...

Emily, that sly look is going to give me nightmares... He is obviously in on something horrible about to happen...

I actually read the two short stories that follow #7. The first, The Great St. Mary's Day Out was awesome! They went back to watch the original Hamlet production, and since they are St. Mary's, everything goes nutty, but in a lighthearted way. Markham steals the show, literally:)))

The second one is from Markham 's POV, My Name is Markham, and is about them investigating the story of King Alfred burning the cakes on another Max, Peterson and Markham Christmas adventure... Light and enjoyable as well. His observation of the little runty dog being like him, on the lower level of the social ladder, made me kind of sad for him. He thinks he is not as good as all the rest, but I absolutely adore the little dude! I hope he stays around till the end of the series...

I know! I totally had the same thoughts at the end!

Going to dive into the shorts probably today or tomorrow. Looking forward to it!

I just hit up (or got hit by) the Audible shorts sale. Kinda bummed none of the St. Mary's shorts were on it--I think I only have up through book 10...

I thought the series was winding down, but the blurb for #13 (which came out a few months ago), changed at some point...

At one time, the blurb sounded like one final romp for Max and Markham, where they try to save the world/timeline/St. Mary's...

Honestly not sure what JT would do without St. Mary's and Time Police books to write...

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments I just read the Desiccated Water short, which is one page and is posted under the GR description of the story:) Looked for another one like that, and it was the Markham and the Anal Probing, hahaha! The name is just as good as the story, once again posted under the GR description. Both are like deleted scenes and absolutely cute!

Iain, I have no idea what she would be doing without this world... I think she should just stick with it:)))

Markham is for sure one of my favorites! I'm glad he got his own book. The shenanigans from those short stories were great fun as always! :D

Tonari no Emily (emlfem) | 5115 comments I'm okay with endless St. Mary's :D I mean she has all of history for subject matter ;)

Do you even need history, when you have St. Mary's and Professor Rapson and company playing Mythbusters all over the place?

Are we gonna read Ghosts of Gotham 2 this week? A Time for Witches...

I want to get back to Marla Mason 6-10, Choko, but I feel like we should clear some other stuff first...

I've kinda been stalled at the beginning of Theirs to Reason Why #2 ebook, if you still wanna read #1 and join me, Choko...

Tonari no Emily (emlfem) | 5115 comments Witches this week sounds good to me!

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Hahaha! Prof. Rapson is awesome!!!!!!! And I am pretty sure he can explode absolutely anything:)))

I am in for the second Ghost of Gotham this week. I am on the Poor Man Fight #4 right now. Just started it and it is from Alicia 's point of view, before the end of book 3.

Speaking of book 3, I liked it a whole a lot, but I wish he had chosen to (view spoiler)

I am very glad Iain had us start this series, since I have had it in my library since 2016 and just now tackled it... Thanks, my friend:)))

I definitely think one of Elliott Kay's strongest points is characters... it's what makes me read the Good Intentions series, despite basically starting off as harem erotica... the plot has taken over the story, as the series progressed...

I still haven't read #4-5, yet, but probably will soon... and I signed up for his Patreon to get info on 6... there's also tons of short fiction that fills in the gaps in the timeline of the Debtor's War and later stuff in college... from the looks of it, #6 brings him back (view spoiler)

Either way, I'm glad the series isn't over, just because the war is resolved, for the most part, in the trilogy...

And I do my best to make you guys read good books :D

Sometimes, they even happen to be new reads for me, as well...

Noticed there's an audible sale on... ends today...

Short fiction, as cheap as $1

Picked up:

Escape from Yokai Land -- new Laundry Files novella I haven't read yet -- 2hrs, $1
Princess Floralinda and the Forty-Flight Tower -- Tamsyn Muir story -- 4hrs, $3
Nightshades -- Melissa F. Olson series, like her KU stuff -- 4hrs, $3
The Black God's Drums -- P. Djeli Clark story, not connected to Dead Djinn Universe I don't think -- 3hrs, $2
Miniatures: The Very Short Fiction of John Scalzi -- John Scalzi, love him -- 3hrs, $1
The Academy -- Tracy Crosswhite mystery prequel, reading in Mystery Club thread so why not -- 1hr, $1
A Monster Calls -- Patrick Ness -- 4hrs, $2
The Junkie Quatrain -- Peter Clines, love him -- 4hrs, $2

Total: 25hrs of audio for $15... cost of 1-2 credits, depending on membership level... also saw Fated Blades, but you can listen to that for free on KU... think that's part of the Ilona Andrews old Kinsman series...

Tonari no Emily (emlfem) | 5115 comments Might pick up the one by Muir... narrated by Moira Quirk too..

Read a bunch of my new short stories today...

The Academy -- short, sweet, pretty good for what it was and the short page count...

Escape from Yokai Land -- felt a bit rushed, and bittersweet, given it fills in a side story that took place during a book that already came out, and I know how things played out when the MC returned home...

Princess Floralinda and the Forty-Flight Tower -- this was a solid story that turned the Rapunzel trope on it's head... I was a bit worried there weren't enough pages at the end to wrap the story up satisfactorily, but I was wrong... I kinda wish there was a sequel of some sort...

Miniatures: The Very Short Fiction of John Scalzi -- I love Scalzi... not all of these short pieces were great, but plenty were, and I laughed out loud a number of times... and shook my head at others... and I love how some of these were specifically designed for reading at live shows and events...

Work's been pretty draining this week/end... but I read A Time for Witches yesterday... it was just as good on re-read as the first time... makes me wish he'd write more with these characters... next book is new characters, and the new characters are already getting a second book in the serialized newsletter chapters, I think...

Don't want to say too much, until you guys are hip-deep in the story, but I loved the ideas Craig Schaefer was playing with here, and the meaning of the title... some definite Doctor Who vibes :D

You guys have an uncanny knack for being radio silent on the days of the week I'm most available to talk endlessly... Tuesday/Wednesday, with the occasional extra Monday/Thursday, when I use Paid Time Off to take a long weekend, like this week, where I'm winding down on my extra time off...

I've been reading a ton, been on an uptick for a few weeks, now... last few days, I read the whole Dragon Blood Omnibus... 27hrs, 3 books: Balanced on the Blade's Edge, Deathmaker, Blood Charged... now I'm back to Dragon Kin with A Tale of Two Dragons

message 3171: by Choko (new) - rated it 4 stars

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Yeah, Dragon Blood is about dragons, but not the fun kind:))) I still love Lindsey B. though...

I am 35% in the Time for Witches book. Boy, CS can surely get vivid with the violence... Those Kiry are brutal! (view spoiler)

It took me several days to finish Memories of Ice, the third Malazan book in the series, and I finished it yesterday. I forgot how good that book was... Still some parts made me very sad, but anything with Kruppe had me melting with love for the dude:)))

One of those cool elements I've been waiting for you guys to learn... can't just go around spoiling things like that to get people to read book :D

It's like time travel plot twists or Cthulhu plot twists... if it's not obvious in the title, it should be kept secret as long as possible...

I finished a Tale of Two Dragons, altho I'm around to talk about Aiken/Laurenston's distinct character style, if nothing else... this was the second prequel backtrack for me... I've already re-read 6 of the 8 novels in the series...

Not sure what I'm gonna read at work, tomorrow, but I'm doing a novella for a historical mystery, now, that Tammie read a few weeks ago in the mystery thread (companion to the Lady Darby series), then I'm probably gonna continue with Theirs Not to Reason Why #2, if you still had any plans to read #1...

Probably do Marla Mason #5.5, as well, to be ready to continue that when the time comes...

On the Malazan front, I've read the first book 3x, the 2nd book 2x, and the 3rd book 1x... haven't made it to book 4, yet... I need to just buckle down and do it on my own schedule sometime, I think... not right now, tho, I don't think...

I tend to refresh alot, around here... but spend more time responding to comments, than starting conversations, unless it's been quiet for a few days...

Malazan is definitely been on my TBR... I like the audio for the most part... if you don't like the US narration, you can try around to see if you can get the UK version, maybe?... I think they're different...

I've seen the group re-reading, this year, but it hasn't been enough to get me going again, but until recently, I felt like all I was doing was doing re-reads... maybe in the near future, I'll be up to it, but don't hold me to it...

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Malazan is a commitment, particularly of time and attention. There are so many books you can listen to and do other things at the same time, but not with Malazan. When it comes to the characters, yes, there are a lot of them, but I don't even try to remember all of them, I just let the story develop and it gets easier as you go... I did the same with Wheel of Time. You can't stress out over the names...

Kinda ruined my sleep a bit, finished Theirs Not to Reason Why #2, yesterday... the books/series has a tempo to it, with training in the first half and lots of action in the second half...

The first 2 books were soldier training and officer training, and ended on a high note, with many of the secrets of the series finally out in the open... as a contrast, the opening of book 3 is kinda like the opening of the pilot of Battlestar Galactica or something, with the MC finally getting her own ship and a custom crew to man it... this is the final main team for the rest of the series, I think... a team of 160ish, with some real standout characters and a ton of more background characters...

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments I am starting it right now.

You did me wrong, Iain!!! I thought I could just read Tale of Two Dragons, but of course I couldn't stop with it!!!! I am so stupidly addicted to this world of GAA's, that I had to read Dragon Actually and the story of Barselak and Rhiannon that followed too!!!! I am shutting it down right now, because otherwise I will forsake all other books and binge on this one... I still love the story of our Mad Queen and her dragon, despite all the sex... It is so addictive!!!! As I said, I have to force myself to put About a Dragon down so I can read Theirs not to Reason Why...

Seem to be hitting a bit of a wall, again...

I've got plenty of things I COULD read, but not many things I WANT to read...

Yesterday, I looped back around to Dade County Death Cruise (great title), #2 in the Orlando People series set in 2004-2006, so far... pre-iPhone... lets the author make tons of dated references... lot's of Shaq love/hate...

I tried this a month ago, I think, but wasn't in the mood, and the story didn't pick up fast enough... this time, I got through the setup and reached the meat of the story and it was great... based on the cover/title, I thought it was an investigation that led to a cruise liner, but it was more a luxury yacht meeting that turned into a Locked Room mystery / psychological horror, at sea... and it was pretty great... and managed to do another round of the NC (Gretch Wolgast) impersonating her "parner" FBI Agent Prader's machismo to tell what he did for a chapter, when he got separated in the story...

But that ending... Fuck You Alexander C. Kane... write a 3rd book already... such a cliffhanger, and I have no idea what exactly it is, or what it means for the future of the series...

Tonari no Emily (emlfem) | 5115 comments Ooh a Kane! seems interesting, hopefully I can check it out... eventually... Got a lot on my plate this month, and it couldn't come at a worst time because my attention span is very short lately.. I'm bouncing between like 4 books which is not very efficient way to read anything lol

Also need to get to Dragon Kin of course... Its on hoopla for me so I'll probably use those as some filler slots at the end of the month.. I need to actually remember to use them up, the past few months I've saved them till the end and then forgot to use them 😅
