I haven't gotten much reading done this week... because I've been sick, and haven't gone to work much this week... good thing I finally cleared most of my BRs...

Not entirely call-ins... this is also Inventory Week for the year, at work... so I was off Saturday as an extra day, because this morning I had to work a half shift from 4-9am, so I could turn around and go back in 10pm-7am tonight...

I got a 3-4hr nap so far... hopefully get another 2-3hr one before work... otherwise I'll be living off energy drinks I mostly weaned myself off of, last year... at least my regular day(s) off start right after, partially truncated...

I had serious Jurassic Park vibes... to be expected, and even mentioned in the story... it's just... people get stupid when they get a chance to interact with big monster creatures... and it never goes well... and they try again again... considering Jurassic World and Jurassic Part are apparently set in the same world and not a reboot, they've tried 6x in the world... talk about stupid :D

I forgot to mention my favorite moment in the Kaiju book... near the end... (view spoiler)[the Power Rangers / Captain Planet and the Planeteers moment, when they slammed their fists together with the nuclear material, and the portal opened up... and the scientist was like "you've gotta be fucking kidding me, with this Syfy channel level of science" :D

I laughed out loud, and loved it... even if it was a coincidence, and really caused by Bella going unstable... (hide spoiler)]

I just finished (I'm at the finish line cheering for you Narilka!), and I had so many laugh out loud moments during this book. It was really something I needed, and I'm seeing that all around.

And in the end, Mike Satie is still my f-ing hero.

Haven't gotten to our Monday TT book today yet.. Will probably read tonight since they go by so quickly. I've been anxious all week about an interview and couldn't concentrate when I wanted to read. But interview is out of the way and I can enjoy things now lol

TTSM #7... This was interesting and I would have rated it a star higher, if there wasn't as much redundancy as there is. (view spoiler)[ Scott's story started violently and went on that way for most of the story. I liked the premise of his lesson and chosen path in life, particularly after screwing it up 20 times in a row... At least the last three lives he decided on a path, and I actually really liked his life in Vermont, in the cabin and the small, friendly community he had there. Maybe because that sounds like the dream life to me, reading and researching while surrounded by nature and good folks...

After the first time he got killed by the really violent husband though, I think I would have put more planning into my approach. Maybe my end game wouldn't have always been killing the bad guys, but using the laws of the municipalities and states, I would have set them up to get life or the death sentence, and only in the most violent or unpredictable cases would I have gone for the throat. But that is me... I have no idea how He wasn't caught, since not once did he mention wearing gloves and he left his blood all over the place... I know that communication between states was, and even still is, terrible, when it comes to sharing about ongoing cases, so the only reason it is possible for him not to have gotten caught, was because he crisscrossed the country ...

I loved his work with Joe and most of all, the way he set-up the lady who tried to drown her kids:) That was awesome! And I liked that he found peace at the end...

What was interesting, and to me a big problem with the vigilante time travelers, was the dude who had killed his family by burning the house... He is also a time traveler, and he is trying to get his life on the straight and narrow, but people like Scott and Johnny keep killing him before he has a chance to do that... I want to know his story and see how the author will solve that, so the dude would have a chance of redemption... But this is an issue, no? (hide spoiler)]

Overall, I still enjoy the series and will be back next Monday for #8...:)))

I listened to Scott's story today too.

The redundancy got to me as well. Though--to be honest, I've been zoning out more and more when listening to audio, so I probably needed it. >.<

I totally agree--(view spoiler)[I really liked his life in Vermont, and his relationship with the bookstore owner--one thing this book series has done really well is the strength and power of found-family relationships.

When did crime science start using DNA and blood typing, fingerprints etc? I definitely agree that outside of the obvious plot holes, his decision to kill people instead of entrap them--or give them a chance--was a problem. Fortunately, it was a problem that the story tried to address. It didn't address it quite satisfyingly enough for me. I feel like Thomas in the first book, and Michael in the second, did a great job with the entrapment/redemption options, and this was weak in comparison--until it got to the last case, when he saved the children from drowning in the car.

And I also totally want to get that former arsonist/murderer's story. (hide spoiler)]

This wasn't my favorite entry, but I'm still really enjoying them. I especially like the author's note at the ends of each, and getting a peek under the hood.

I started listening to Redwall.

It's a really different experience listening to the audiobook compared to my memories of reading the physical copy.

For one, I always wondered what the moles sounded like, with all their "Oi"s. I read that the accent was based on a well known accent of some Salty Old Gents in a specific village outside Liverpool.

I know that Jacques roped family and friends into doing voice acting, but some of the actors sound genuinely young. The voices of Cornflower and Matthias, in particular, sound like pre-teens. I don't know if that's some talented voice acting, or if Jacques hired his children or nieces/nephews--in which case they still do a great job for folks so young.

Also, the lyric quality of the prose is especially prevalent when listened to, and easily glossed over when reading. Jacques uses a lot of alliteration that tumbles trippingly off the tongue, and is a true pleasure to the ear.

Also, a local friend listening to the audiobook had to stop and ask me--"what's a squiddle?" which is apparently what "Squirrel" sounds like with a Liverpudlian accent.

I'm up to the end of Book/Part 1. I'd forgotten most of the story beats, and am more impressed with Matthias than I remember. I really enjoy Cluny's Spanish accent, and the clear-cut good v. evil storyline is a breath of fresh air (especially since I'm half-way through the second book in Malazan).

I thought I would be... turned into closer to 150 minutes... I escaped as soon as I could... nearly 10hr shift... there was an option to stay a bit longer, but most of us took the option to leave... everyone that could would have left at the 90 minute mark, if they felt like they could, but they were stressing about a missing page of the audit and cleaning up for store opening...

Home now, tho, with some breakfast... tempted to try and stay up all day to fix sleep...

Alright finished TTSM.. Agreeing with a lot of y'alls points.. (view spoiler)[ I feel like the author is trying to address some plot holes or at least acknowledge them with the conversation between that time travel mercenary and Scott.. How the origin creator of the multiverse suicides and wakes up and the other people who start over are there too? Doesn't quite make sense...maybe Inmon will figure out a way to explain it in the next book..

And yeah! The fact that the murderers aren't given a chance while Michael was.. Idk something feels weird there.

Also DNA in crime scenes wasn't a thing till at least the late '80's... And even at the start, not 100% reliable depending on what method they're using.. But fingerprints and stuff definitely are! On the other hand, there are like a lot of unsolved murders in the US... I think only 60% are ever solved? Something crazy like that.. (hide spoiler)]

I got the single narrator version of the audio.. But the narrator is pretty good. And yes, sometimes having clear cut good vs evil is nice. You definitely know who you're rooting for!

Redwall #1... I am almost to the end of Part 2. Love, love, love Matthias, Methuselah and the badger!!! And the Abbott, and the squirrel Silent Sam, and the murderous sparrow, which Matthias was able to tame somehow, and I felt kind of sorry for the fox, despite her duplicity... Of course, Clooney the Scourge is evil in a funny sort of ferocious way, which is of course perfect for the story:) When I read books like that, I wish I had kids to read them to. I will have to get them for my nieces...

Glad you got some good sleep Iain! Hopefully you can fix your sleep schedule without too much difficulty.. Definitely know the feeling. I work nights for an 8-on 6-off schedule. When I'm off I flip flop my schedule because being on a night shift schedule when I'm off is very lonely.. So basically I'm always jetlagged. Hopefully I'll be on days soon though!

I'm not quite as far as some of you with Redwall yet, but I'm very much enjoying the recommended audiobook! The full cast is such a treat! Such a good production ~<3

I just finished Chapter 11 (Redwall) ~
(view spoiler)[It's all kind of coming back to me. I used to watch the animated show as a kid and enjoyed that thoroughly. Never got around to the book though!

In ch 2 it was so great to hear the narration change in tone as the big bad was described - ala Cloony the Rat!

I also loved the later chapter in where they caught a fish for dinner. And just were all chatting at the table. The dialogue just flows so smoothly. Loving the world~

The Badger, Constance I believe, has to be one of my favorite characters so far. She's so tough. Getting the mice and critters to question the danger instead of laughing it off.

About to read The Misfit Soldier, if anyone wants to join me... finally got my hands on it... came out a few weeks ago...

Short standalone Sci-fi from Michael Mammay, author of Planetside / Spaceside / Colonyside trilogy...

Blurb calls it Ocean's Eleven meets John Scalzi, but the summary reads more like Saving Private Ryan or something... clearly, more is going on that isn't being said...

Big fan of this author, that lacks much of a catalog beyond the 3 books above... I liked them, and Niki & Brian loved this new book (Brian has been quiet around here lately with all the new faces around generating 43 pages of chat in 3 months)...

I'm kinda struggling to find things I want to read at the moment, after weeks of BR scheduling and then not reading much of anything the past 5 days, so I'm gonna read this now, alone or with anyone that can get their hands on it...

I'd be interested in reading the Mammay book--I haven't read his planetside trilogy but I have and have been wanting to read it. Wouldn't mind starting with a standalone. I'll pick up a copy today or tomorrow.

Sounds good... I'm about 25% in (it really is short... only about 8hrs audio before speedup), and loving the MC and characters... real ragtag bunch of characters, as the blurb suggests... almost got some Phule's Company vibes (if a bit more functional)...

There also seems to be a bit of mystery about how this war is being fought...

I'm not 100% sure this is going to stay a standalone... could easily become a series... not even done yet, and I wouldn't mind revisiting these characters in the future... the Planetside trilogy could have been standalone, and it's kinda surprising it isn't given how each book plays out...
