Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments I'll probably join for Lightbringer. I haven't finished the series and want to do that. I put in a hold for #1 at with my library, but not sure if I'll get the audiobook by late May. I'm like #35 in line on 5 copies.

Hoopla has the Graphic Audio versions, but I'm still on a temp card. This is temp card #2 and probably my last. lol

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Nirkatze, how well are the local area stuff about Alaska? Was it well done & representative, or eschewed to show a side that goes well with the storytelling?

Brian | 1681 comments I'll try Lightbringer too in May.

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Yay! We may want to make a Club thread for Lightbringer and post in the Buddy Read Invite thread to let other people know. I'm sure there will be interest. =D

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Choko, in LMS Vol26 - There will be a computer translated page and it wasn't bad!

Also, Hyun goes hiking with the singer. She thinks it's a date. He thinks it's helping a friend. She comes away from it with happy memories of dating and he's just normal. LOL

I've been reading the newer Parker books by Richard Stark. That author can really write! I'm glad to have more of his books to explore. Good, short novels. The books fit the action/heist spot well.

Nirkatze | 21019 comments Soo wrote: "Nirkatze, how well are the local area stuff about Alaska? Was it well done & representative, or eschewed to show a side that goes well with the storytelling?"

I feel it was pretty accurate. I thought the storyteller did a great job of giving the Alaska Native viewpoint on a lot of things to the best of my knowledge. I'm born and raised Alaskan, but not Native, and I've spent my whole life in the city, so my knowledge of life in the Bush is mostly second-hand. I did do a two week exchange program about a decade ago, and that was really amazing.

The general Us v. Them is still very strong: the attitude that people who have lived their lives in the city can't really comprehend the life of people who eke their lives out by subsistence (and thus aren't a jury of their peers). There aren't enough stories of Native life being told by actual Natives out there--which is one thing I really liked about this piece. I was shocked to learn that one of the movies mentioned was the first time an Inupiaq was cast to play an Inupiaq in a major film. I didn't realize it was that bad, but then again, I'm not Native.

And the horrible struggles the Native community has had with alcohol--I thought the storyteller did a great job of walking the line. Showing understanding and the facets of the Teddy's story, without forgiving his actions. The good he did doesn't erase the bad. The bad he did doesn't erase the good either. He shot people at point blank range and abused alcohol. He was a loving uncle and a valued member of the community. Both of these are true, and they don't cancel out.

I'd be down for that! I like the casual way that the Wandering Inn BR goes--no pressure for starting or finishing on a deadline. I've been wondering how that would work for a more traditional series.

Nirkatze | 21019 comments Just started Andrea Vernon 2. Andrea seems to enjoy her after-work parties, doesn't she?

Tonari no Emily (emlfem) | 5115 comments I kinda loved/hated the Lightbringer series... cant really describe why.. but ill definitely lurk on that BR :)

Started AV2 today too. Seems like it Nirkatze!

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Midnight Son: I did like the way the author showed both sides of Smith. Though, I wish he had done a better job on the mysticism and old stories. Then again, fuel for more topics to read up on. =D

Nirkatze | 21019 comments @Emily--everybody loves a lurker! um... in a BR! :) Looking forward to hearing the details.

@Soo--I was definitely intrigued by the Inukuns too--I tried doing a google search but found very little. I found this article below, but it doesn't mention Inukuns at all.

message 1413: by Soo (new) - rated it 3 stars

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Nirkatze, look at this article I found. The spelling is different, but it sounds like the Inukuns may not be a lost tribe, but like a type of Fae.

https://mysteriousuniverse.org/2017/1...

Will need to look into this a bit more when I'm less distracted. =D

Nirkatze | 21019 comments Interesting! Midnight Son didn't say anything about Inukuns being short or little people. The descriptions made them seem almost more bigfoot-like. And all the different spellings in the article you linked make for more google fodder.

Nirkatze | 21019 comments AV2, through Chapter 3. I love the new voices for the velociraptor lady and Nevermore--they're a bit annoying, but annoying is good for supervillains.

And anyone who doesn't love Miss Persephone Oh is about as humorless as the bison who stepped on the beehive.

Girls' luncheon. (view spoiler)

message 1416: by Soo (new) - rated it 3 stars

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments I saw several spellings. Used "Iñukuns lore" and got a bunch of different hits.

Native Alaskan doesn't go much of anywhere. The different spellings have similarities for Inukun.

From Midnight Son, I thought it was a tribe that decided to find another place to settle away from the encroaching settlements of the white man.

message 1417: by Nirkatze (last edited Feb 26, 2022 08:22PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Nirkatze | 21019 comments Same--a tribe that branched off millennia ago, and evolved into something else. With them covered in hair and leathery palms, I was thinking bigfoots. In the ADN article, I thought they might be like the second creatures mentioned--the Bushmen/tornits.

I have a children's book about the Qalupalik--A Promise is a Promise. Loved that book growing up.

message 1418: by Soo (new) - rated it 3 stars

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments I don't see why they have to turn into yeti's or bigfoot. LOL

But wouldn't that be interesting?!

Nirkatze | 21019 comments lol, it would be! I wasn't thinking that they'd turn into yeti or bigfoot--just that all-hairy people living in the wilds with random sighting sounded like bigfoot. Not that they are big size wise necessarily.

Nirkatze | 21019 comments AV2 Chap 5. "malevolent mustachioed misanthropes" *mwah*

Nirkatze | 21019 comments AV2 Chap 6.

Sock-shoe-sock-shoe? Or Sock-sock shoe-shoe? What's the verdict?

Usually I'm sock-sock shoe-shoe. But if I'm dealing with wet feet that are collecting sand or dirt, then I'm sock-shoe sock-shoe. Is that sacrilege?

Nirkatze | 21019 comments lol AV Chap 7--(view spoiler) Still enjoying the girlfriends.

message 1423: by Soo (new) - rated it 3 stars

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments I do both. Usually, at home, it's sock sock, then shoe shoe. In car, usually do to hiking/etc, sock shoe - sock shoe.

Nirkatze | 21019 comments Yeah, it's kinda like--am I somewhere where I am ok walking around in socks? Sock sock. Don't want my socks touching that crap? sock-shoe.

Sock sock shoe shoe… getting ready for work is a whole production, for me… I wear compression socks, for my legs, and need to put them on a specific way, since they’re designed to be form fitting and then some…

message 1426: by Choko (new) - rated it 4 stars

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Sock-shoe sock-shoe for me, no matter what. That is, if I wear them at all. I prefer flip-flops most of the time:)))

message 1427: by Narilka (new) - rated it 5 stars

Narilka | 5692 comments Generally, sock sock, shoe shoe :) Unless, like Soo, I'm in a car changing for a hike. Then its sock shoe/sock shoe.

message 1428: by Soo (new) - rated it 3 stars

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments I love our random discussions. =D

Nirkatze | 21019 comments lol!

Choko, do you wear shoes in your house? Or never wear socks? I'm sock-sock shoe-shoe because no shoes in my house. But it's chilly up here so socks are pretty necessary in the winter.

Timelord Iain | 35312 comments Mod
I had house sandals for the longest time... house crocs are better tho, more spongey... I feel 50 years older after working 8hrs on cement floors and standing in the driving compartment of a forklift...

and I generally wear my compression socks, even on days off, for circulation...

Nirkatze | 21019 comments I have several pairs of house slippers too--nice and cushy!

How do compression socks work? Is it just that the extra squeeze sends blood up more? I've always wondered...

message 1432: by Soo (new) - rated it 3 stars

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Compression socks/pants/etc help circulation by giving a bit of pressure against your body. It doesn't help by itself alone. You need to be making some movements that flex muscles/etc. With the compression helps blood circulation and that will fix a lot of issues like cold feet, certain types of aches, etc.

I like light compression socks for gym & hikes. The knee high ones are good for airplane flights and winter.

I haven't found thicker/heavier compression socks that feel good for winter hikes.

High pain tolerance + sensitive skin = need to pay attention to minute details if I don't want to have gigantic blisters/deep cuts from ill fitting socks/shoes/etc.

message 1433: by Soo (new) - rated it 3 stars

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments No shoes in my house. I prefer bare feet. Had to adjust to sports compression socks for gym & hiking. Gotten into wearing socks in winter, but I prefer no socks or shoes at home. Still have slippers and Croc sandals. lol

Timelord Iain | 35312 comments Mod
What Soo said about compression socks... they're best put on as soon as you get up, before your body has a chance to settle more water in legs/etc, or so I hear... basically, being awake and active can cause some swelling of the legs, making socks tigher... getting socks on early avoids that...

For me, I wear compression socks for circulation, varicose veins, and nerve issues that can lead to pinpoint pains and/or blanket numbness/burning when standing in certain ways or putting pressure on certain parts of my leg...

My compression socks are XL ones I can buy at walmart and walgreens... Copper Fit... knee-high... also covers the skin discoloration that's been creeping up my legs for the last decade...

Someone generally asks me about them, every couple months... customers at work, or cashiers at stores... I'm pretty positive about the whole thing, extolling the virtues...

The socks and my diuretic blood pressure meds that make me pee away water buildup, have done wonders for foot sweat issues I have/had, that led me to wearing cargo shorts in winter and hunting for the perfect combo of socks and shoes above 5 years ago...

I still wear cargo shorts in winter... always easier to add a layer than remove one... especially at work...

I find the crocs sweat-inducing, if not wearing socks with them...

Socks & Crocs ;)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments My dislike of the Hoopla interface & search algorithms make me reluctant to use it. I went on there to find something to use up my credits.

Yay! Found a vampire duology by Alex Bledsoe on there. Just finished listening to Blood Groove #1 and it was good! Disturbing and good. More or less the mix that expect from a Bledsoe novel. Need to find 5 more books for Hoopla and I'll have like 2.5 weeks left on the temp card. After that, I'll probably just delete the app.

The whole you can only get 10 books per month is a complete downer. At least with Overdrive, it's 10 max borrowed at a time. I can read as much as I want.

message 1438: by Soo (new) - rated it 3 stars

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Iain, I decided to use my Audible wish list for ideas on books to search for on Hoopla.

There's a handful of Charles Stross books.

2 Duologies, 1 Standalone, & the 1st book for the New Management series. I was hoping for the last Laundry Files, but no luck.

- Dead Lies Dreaming #1
- Singularity Sky #1
- Halting State #1
- Glasshouse

Tonari no Emily (emlfem) | 5115 comments Definitely a sock-sock-shoe-shoe here! Unless I'm changing shoes, then one complete foot at a time.

I loved that part! It's so funny seeing how they can both be friends and on opposite sides. Like hey, I'm arresting you now. Beer later?

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments OOOh, that's really cool info to add to the story. More nuances! I want to Hi-5 Alex Kane more now. =D

He's pretty cool.

Plus, I love that Bahni Turpin learned to say it right and still make sure the character did it wrong. Hahhaha

Nirkatze | 21019 comments Oh totally! The narrator is so talented.

That makes me think of actors who have to pretend to be bad acting, or singers who have to pretend bad singing.

Time for TTNM #4, The Final Life of Nathaniel Moon. ;)

I'll start #4 after I finish the current book I'm listening to.

I’m fine with the Hoopla system, it’s free and different niche than Overdrive… until I forget to use some credits and the daily/monthly limit was already capped at 7am today… everyone else had the same idea…

message 1448: by Soo (new) - rated it 3 stars

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Hoopla - The search function is annoying. Search by title/author/series and there may or may not be results based on search. Lots of unnecessary results too with music/movies/etc. It just makes me think they have a crappy database system.

Overdrive: Search by title or author & get answers. There may be quirks, but not as many as Hoopla app.

Audible's sale. The most dangerous one of all. Whole website on sale. This type of sale used to happen every year, but I don't think it happened last year.

Depending on the discount, it could be a good time to fill in series/etc. Great time for me to get LitRPG try list books. Well, if they're $5 or less.

Remember that it's only a deal if it's cheaper than an Audible Credit.
