does the link say what thread it was in?... maybe it's in a thread the mods tidied up at some point?

message 52: by Soo (new) - rated it 3 stars

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments It was linked to the actual post within my tracker thread. I did a reorganization of the posts in 2020 & 2021. Normally, I would save the content by copying it and putting it into another post. I thought I did that, but I can't find it in my thread. I know there's a copy of it in my journals, but that would take more work to find. lol

WebToon is having a Canvas Reading Nook week. Canvas is WebToon's indie comic platform/category. I think you have to get your series approved to be shown on there. Since it's free to read per planned updates or you can "speed up" by paying. This week, you get a WT coin for reading 10 Canvas episodes.

I started Nobody Knew by Strekinstinkt. I think Nordic art crew? Labeled as a thriller. It reads more like a psychological/cult/mystery. Good setup in the first 10 episodes. =)

Now I need to find time to re-read Finn Fancy Necromancy, so I can read Bigfootloose and Finn Fancy Free & Smells Like Finn Spirit

I was picked by the Book Fairy... guess it's a good thing I picked something, just in case, after that warning that you might be randomly selected, even if you don't explicitly sign up...

Because I'm not already overbooked for the next few weeks :D

The books should be fun... I really liked the first one, and compared it to all the problems I had with Spoonbenders (done right, instead)...

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments That's cool! I didn't post any books because I don't want to feel obligated to read it. Hahaha! I'm still in my curmudgeon mode. XD

I was actually considering spending my own credits on them... mentioning them in the Book Fairy thread refreshed my memory about them... just been putting it off for the past 2 years...

Also why I kept my list small... I only had one book on it, and never added more... when the actuality of a 2nd book was mentioned, I just expanded to the last book in the same series...

So now I have all 3 books in the series... and I was able to find an audible link for gifting book credits, which made the whole thing cheaper / easier...

Speaking of obligations, that's why I never sign up for random ARCs/etc...

message 57: by Soo (new) - rated it 3 stars

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments ARC's are great! But my personal expectations for what I do as a reader for ARC's are high and I don't want to obligate myself in that manner. I'm still embracing the yays of relative freedom. Heh

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments LoL - I told you I'd make a new one for 2022!

Also, make your potential BR in Vagabond list. I need to do that too. On page 1, I saved post #2 & 3 for updating what we've read and may want to read.

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments I am interested in the Fin Fancy Necromancy series myself... Hmmmm

message 63: by Soo (new) - rated it 3 stars

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments I know there are some books that are coming out in 2022 that we talked about reading together. Like the Peter Cline, Blake Crouch, etc. I know I'll get an update from Amazon or Audible about those books. I figure one of us will bring it up when it's closer to the release date.

Here's stuff I already have and plan to read.

Potential Vagabond Buddy Reads:

- The Pariah #1 by Anthony Ryan
- Elatsoe by Darcie Little Badger
- A Master of Djinn #1 by P. Djeli Clark
- Crown of Vengeance #1 by Mercedes Lackey, James Mallory
- The Messenger #1 by Terry Maggert, J.N. Chaney (This is on Audible +)
- Now, Then, and Everywhen #1 by Rysa Walker
- Artful by Peter David (KU Read & Listen)
- The Bright Empire Series by Stephen R. Lawhead (Library or Bundle Pack on Audible)
- The Gates #1 by John Connolly
- A History of What Comes Next #1 by Sylvain Neuvel
- The Bard's Blade #1 by Brian D. Anderson
- The Eerie Adventures of the Lycanthrope Robinson Crusoe by Peter Clines
- Battle Royale by Koushun Takami
- The Power of the Dog #1 by Don Winslow

There's more to list but I'll add those later. haha

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Laundry Files #11 will be out soon. Gotta see if my library is going to get it. =D

message 65: by Soo (new) - rated it 3 stars

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Eek! Most of the books expired and there's only one ebook left at the Library.

Put in a library request to get Quantum of Nightmares #11.

Quantum of Nightmares is KINDA #2... really more Dead Lies Dreaming #2...

I thought it was set in the Laundry Files universe, but one of the blurbs / descriptions said it was an alternate dimension... that doesn't make sense, tho, since the Prime Minister is the same guy... anyway...

Quantum of Nightmares and Welcome the Yokai Land are the only 2 Laundry books I see this year... Dead Lies Dreaming #2 and Laundry Files #7.5... I wouldn't mind if Laundry Files #10 also came out this year, tho... from what I remember, it should be (view spoiler)

I'm up for reading Peter Clines, Artful, Quantum of Nightmares... those are things already on my TBR (I think I found Artful the last time you linked it)...

On the fence about Rysa Walker... CHRONOS Files was such a mixed bag of a series, when I BR'd it a year or 3 ago...

The series name sounds like a prequel, but the blurb sounds like a sequel...

A History of What Comes Next sounds interesting, too... I never read Themis Files, the other series the author is known for...

message 68: by Soo (new) - rated it 3 stars

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Themis Files is fun! I read the trilogy and looked up the short stories. The shorts are free and I think I read them via browser.

Themis Files #1 was the best in my opinion, but the whole trilogy was good SF.

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Yeah! It was a Daily Deal on Audible. I totally got it.

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments I think we should read The Paris closer to June, when the second book comes out. I am in for The Messenger anytime!... Honestly, I think cool with your whole list, Soo...

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments *The Pariah...

message 73: by Soo (new) - rated it 3 stars

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments OOH, that's a good point about Pariah. We should do that.

Yay! Choko, let's all plan to read when we have a break between other BRs. I know Iain is busy for a few weeks and you have a few BRs going right now.

Brian | 1681 comments haha Pariah. I will post those other books but you know I am always down to read anything

message 77: by Soo (new) - rated it 3 stars

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments I started Hell's Gate #1, but the story is moving in a slow manner. Which I should have expected. It's a Weber & Linda Evans (not familiar with Evans) trilogy. I wanted to hop into a SF before I go into the other stories.

Tried to read two light novels. 1 is recommended by another friend. The other one was recommended by Julian. Overlord will probably be fun. Alex liked it a lot. I like the approach & concepts, but stalled on story frame logic. I was like why isn't blah blah happening?

Classroom of the Elite translation is one of the so-so ones. The kind that's ok but requires mental gymnastics to figure out what was left out. lol

Apparently, there's an anime & comic based on it but they're modified & different from the light novel. I may hunt down the comic.

So I ditched them and started a new manhwa called Please Throw Me Away. It's a given another chance after death type. The two main characters are hopelessly awkward and don't fit the mold of proper/etc. There's a nice fairy tale spin of mysterious forest, potential treasure hunt and maybe some sort of curse. The premise is closer to old school fairy tales. Dark themes of violence and death mixed with light humor.

message 78: by Julian (new)

Julian | 759 comments Overlord is for sure going to be fun, it's like the top selling light novel for the past few years I think.

As for classroom of the elite that's a shame it has a mediocre translation, from what I've heard it's one of the top light novels in Japan too. I watched the anime for it a year or so ago and the general story was pretty good but they only made a single season and it was obviously an attempt at trying to sell the light novels. The last 5 minutes or so of the season especially was them dropping bombs on watchers to make them want to know what happens next without ever creating a second season.

If you want some manga or light novel recommendations btw I highly suggest seeing what the top rated mangas are in myanimelist or anilist. Thats where I usually go for recommendations on both mangas and anime (granted I've been burned out on both for a while).

message 79: by Julian (new)

Julian | 759 comments That reminds me, this is my obligatory read Grand Blue post in case you haven't already @Soo

It is the king of comedy as well as is a nice slice of life. I normally don't care too much for comedy when reading, but this was the one time that a manga managed to make me laugh literally while reading it.

message 80: by Soo (new) - rated it 3 stars

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Is Grand Blue a manga?

What I like in anime sometime works in comics/manga/manhwa/manhua. I'm still working out what I like in light novels.

Overlord has fun concepts but it loses a lot in translation. There are nuances that are missing. Also, it's a "go with the flow and don't as a bunch of questions" kind of story. So, what I read is good but not what I'm in the mood for right now.

Classroom of the Elite has a setup that would be fun in anime, but sounds preachy and boring without context in written form. There's an expectation for the reader to automatically want to read the story and find out what's going on. Well, that means, it needs to have a good intro. Awkward shifts in time frame and preachy politics/social commentary are not good enough to hook me. XD

Figured it's another one I'll try at another time.

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Nobody Knew comic has 30 chapters (pretty short ones) on WebToon right now. It's got that weird but fun vibe like the Threshold series.

message 82: by Julian (new)

Julian | 759 comments Yeah grand blue is a manga. There's an anime adaptation out there but the manga is way better.

I should get back to Strongest Florist... I think I'm about 20 episodes behind, now...

And that one where the guy was stuck in the Tutorial Tower for 20 years and is a flip flop badass...

And 1 or 2 others I started and ran out of translated episodes for...

message 84: by Soo (new) - rated it 3 stars

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Grand Blue sounds fun!

Iain, I just did a spree with Teenage Mercenary. That was good! Stopped at the new action arc.

Yeah! That tower MC is great. I should have more than 20 chapters for all of those. I wish Peerless Dad came out faster. That manhua is awesome sauce.

There's been a spree of returns...

Miche and Choko and You returned after awhile away...

Olivia and some others kinda went AWOL at the end of the competition, so not as long...

I'm sure the newer people wonder what all the hubbub is about, when people show up and we start talking in caps with exclamation marks :D

The Art of Prophecy - Looks good! My fav series by WC is the Lives of Tao series. Good to great books.

Released later this year. So I'm excited, but bummed that it's out in August. lol

Barry definitely seems to have gone off on a tangent... he wrote a dozen Space Team books, then broke his hands in a car accident, then shifted to writing Scottish mysteries as JD Kirk... a dozen books later, Soo says he's writing a new mystery series now?

Needs to turn around and write more Space Team :D

Only good thing is he releases books fast... that's a dozen books in 2 different series, in like 5 years...

I should update my tracker thread with dates for the official BR's and stuff, but I don't wanna. Need to do it at some point. I do like looking back to see what I BR'ed. I guess I could do something like Iain and put the link into the book on the Team Tracker. Hmmm.

Mysteries and Romances are the 2 most profitable genres, I think...

EDIT: Yea:

Book Genres That Make the Most Money

Romance/Erotica – $1.44 billion. ...
Crime/Mystery – $728.2 million. ...
Religious/Inspirational – $720 million. ...
Science Fiction/Fantasy – $590.2 million. ...
Horror – $79.6 million.

Julian | 759 comments Has anyone here read the Legend series? And if so, would you recommend reading book 4? I just finished the 3rd book and it feels like the perfect ending to a series but am surprised that they'd make a 4th book which might be trying to just milk the series
