Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Just finished Agincourt... Wow! I knew a ton about this battle, but had no idea about the slaughter of the prisoners... That's horribly dishonorable for the time. No wonder the French didn't trust their word...

Another book showing how horrible and senseless war is... But still a very good book!

message 852: by Soo (new) - rated it 3 stars

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Did you listen to the author notes? For the time, it wasn't considered dishonorable to kill prisoners. It was just as likely to have ransoms or death. The English forces were already starving. There was no way they could feed & herd thousands of prisoners.

It was a good book!

Julian | 759 comments 388:51 hours to listen to the main 10 malazan books or 11,216 pages....

Let's goooooooo

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Soo, I did, and I totally understand why Henry V did it, it is just heartbreaking... I loved the book, and we should eventually read some other of his stand-alone books. But I really, really need something lighter now. Goodness gracious! It has been quite a bit of rape, pillage and slaughter, I need some humor. Although, Sir John was hilarious:) At least that was a bit of a comic relief:)

LoL - You need to add about 150 hours for re-listening to a bunch or just plain double it.

Aren't you doing a bunch of re-reads? Or that's the way it seems?

LMS is my light but meaningful read for me right now. Constance Verity will be a mix of dark & light humor.

How about the Mystic Bayou series on Audible Plus? That's all fun PNR.

message 856: by Choko (new) - rated it 4 stars

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Started the first Constance Verity and after the first two chapters I can say yep, this will work for a break:)

That job interview didn't turn out the way I thought it would:)))

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Constance Verity 01, Ch. 5 - the mark of a good sidekick is to be undertrained and overenthusiastic:) Hahaha!

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Yup! =D

message 859: by Julian (new)

Julian | 759 comments With Malazan I don't think I could reread it with audiobooks tbh. Even having already read it once it is going to be a difficult read and my comprehension is always better when reading rather than listening.

message 860: by Brian (new)

Brian | 1681 comments Totally agree Julian. I am slowly reading Gardens of the Moon. I tried audio but feel like I miss too much. Plus I’m always going to the map and names index to remember who’s who.

message 861: by Soo (new) - rated it 3 stars

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Brian, my advice is to just read Gardens of the Moon without going to check the character index. Too much page flipping can get in the way of what's happening within the story. If you have the audiobook, I would listen to the audiobook while you are doing other stuff. Hearing the story after reading it will make it stick in your head better.

I did Malazan mostly by audiobook. Yay audiobooks! The audiobooks have good narrators. That totally helped me finish the series.

Reading Malazan had the tendency of ticking me off for various reasons. XD

message 862: by Soo (new) - rated it 3 stars

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments I miss browsing in bookstores!!! Even if I probably would dislike 65% of the books in the romance section. I really want to browse romances, mock the books I don't like and pick out a few to read. Audible Plus has mostly terrible romances and the mediocre ones sound like terrible romances on audio. I need my romance fix!

Just like I need my sci-fi, thriller, mystery, etc.

LMS doesn't count. Weed has to be the least romantic and clueless person ever. LOL It's more of a blind comedy on the romance aspect. Great adventures though.

message 863: by Brian (new)

Brian | 1681 comments I will try the audio. I own both. I love audiobooks (even more after be-friending you, Iain, and Choko). 😀. I like to read certain books and usually have a paperback, kindle book, and Audio going at same time.

message 864: by Julian (new)

Julian | 759 comments I have both the ebook and audiobook version for the main malazan books. Usually when reading I need to stop and look up maps or look up stuff online to make sure I fully understand things

Tonari no Emily (emlfem) | 5115 comments I tried doing audio for Malazan, and it just did not work for me. I'm not sure if I'll be able to reread Malazan after all this year, but we'll see how this goes. There's so many unread books I want to read... But I want to read the books I haven't read yet in malazan and I want to reread first before I do that... and now I'm spiraling xD

Tonari no Emily (emlfem) | 5115 comments @ Soo, I can start the first one probably Monday!

I still need to read half of Relentless... lay down and watched TV early yesterday...

This book has been a real clusterf**k for the Gray Man... (view spoiler)

message 868: by Soo (new) - rated it 3 stars

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Malazan - 1st book: I tried reading for years. I own the hardback and I would not get past the first few chapters before putting it down and doing something else.

2019 is when I decided to finally make a go for reading the whole series. There were buddy reads for the series in two of my groups on GR. I thought that would help me keep going to the end. The pacing for the BR's didn't work for me and I sidetracked myself from finishing.

2020: Determined to finish! Solo run. XD
Re-read #1-4 and then kept going. Put in buffer books between. I only posted one or two official read counts for the books, but I probably listened to each audiobook 1.5 to 2.5x. There are parts of the books that needed the replay or I just liked it a lot and replayed it.

#1-2 are a kick in the pants as beginning books for the series. #3 & 5 were favs.

@Emily, sweet! Let's aim for Monday for The Unusual Second Life of Thomas Weaver.

Gray Man - action action action! lol

message 869: by Julian (new)

Julian | 759 comments @Emily I'm kind of the same in that I want to reread malazan to read the newer books coming out but at the same time there are so many other books that I've never even read once which I want to read too.

Someday I would love to own a complete set of all the malazan books physically (either all in hardback or paperback)

Yea... I'm a pretty big fan of A. Lee Martinez... I just need to spread them out... too much zany in a row, and it loses it's appeal...

I read this several years ago, but not the 2nd book, and now a 3rd is coming... but elements definitely feel familiar, as I get going...

I think that was a plot point in The Sidekicks Initiative: A Comedy Superhero Adventure... sidekicks were a bit of a trope in the 80s/90s... once one superhero had one, they all needed one... but they were all normal people, generally orphaned and saved by the superhero... so it was inevitable they'd either die or go crazy from the stress of the job... kinda depressing :D

message 875: by Choko (new) - rated it 4 stars

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Soo, do I have to read the story that precedes it?

MLS V2. Just finished it and I enjoyed it quite a bit. Honestly, if it wasn't for the translation, it would be great.

Loved that we got to see him hanging with his sister at the festival, winning those ninja type games. Starting the next one right away:)))

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Nope! They're written to be standalone. I read both and liked Sweet Talk a lot more.

LMS: He gets the Princess Knight nickname from it and Hyun can't stand it! LOL

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Haha! I loved his interaction with his sister! And yeah, I can see him being all grumpy about that nickname:)
Also, was it me, or did you feel kind of wrong when he bought those eggs from the Avians, them thinking he will raise them while he's thinking about eating them:) Hahaha! I am hoping he raises at least a couple of them!

message 878: by Soo (new) - rated it 3 stars

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments I was 50/50. I was thinking that Weed was going to raise them and maybe turn them into fighters or eat them. XD

Obviously, it's more eating than not. LOL

Tonari no Emily (emlfem) | 5115 comments @ Julian I love owning complete physical copies of series. It just looks so nice on the bookshelf :D I have the mass market paperbacks of the Main 10 by Erikson, but Esselmont's is a mess. And I actually own the first two Kharkanas trilogy and they're just sitting there on the shelf glaring at me cuz its been years and I still haven't read them. lol

message 881: by Julian (new)

Julian | 759 comments I only started collecting physical books last year so I don’t own many books (maybe 10-15 total). I’d love having a set for both Malazan and wheel of time one day but I have a hard time justifying the price when I already own the ebook versions lol.

Weather seems to have gone from Snowpocalypse to Winter Chill... wind chill of -15 today...

Yesterday, going out in the snow was a 4 hour adventure... and I'm still feeling low energy...

I was outside for like an hour, just getting snow and ice off car... and trying to remove enough snow around my car to escape...

I made the mistake of not buying a new snow shovel... I had one for years, until it was stolen 2 years ago (I kept it in my stairwell for years, with no issues... figured, in an emergency, someone might borrow)... well... it was stolen, and in a huff I never replaced... big mistake...

Once I escaped my apartment building, I went to 2 stores and bought some food, and ended up buying a gardening shovel with flat tip designed for moving dirt around that gets the job done... I don't think there are any snow shovels left in town...

When I got home, I had to park on the streen and shovel the entrance to my apartment parking lot, just to drive in... snow plows had left a barricade I didn't want to try and drive through...

The snow is also super slippery... Just leaving my parking spot that first time took like 3 tries, had to keep getting out and removing more snow from around tires...

Planning to go out today/tomorrow, when temp rises, and actually clear all snow around car with my shovel... 4 hours was enough time outside, yesterday...

And I hope my normal energy levels return, soon... my Leave of Absense from work ends tomorrow... altho, I work Monday then my 2 usual days off happen...

@Choko: read some more Constance Verity... wormholes, amirite? ;)

message 886: by Choko (new) - rated it 4 stars

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Same exact experience with the snow-ice thing. I dug a path to the car yesterday, today I dug out the car itself and ran it a while to melt down the ice... All this so I can get the trash out:) 3 hours!!!

Constance Verity 01, Ch 34... This is definitely funny, but I noticed Conny is given more page time of brooding over wanting to be normal, than when she fights anyone. Actually, since this is so "normal" for her, the fights are only mentioned as starting and finished. I am enjoying it, definitely a very fast read. Loved the dashing ninja ex:)))) And how her sidekick decided to deal with keeping them from getting back together! Still living the ghost of the fairy godmother, but wish there was a bit more of her. And still don't know if I can trust Byron...

Yea... tons of stuff is thrown at you, so fast... literal oneliners while she's being held double prisoner in a secret base beneath ANOTHER secret base, etc etc etc :D

It's great fun, but I've read the blurbs for the trilogy, and feel like we're halfway through the plot of book 2 already, somehow, considering (view spoiler)

I think I'm around the same point you are... I recently read the stuff you mentioned about the sidekick/ninja... but the Hoopla copy of the book doesn't have chapters for some reason, just one large file... 90 minutes left on the 9hr audiobook... so 85%?

So far, the ending is feeling like (view spoiler)

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments You know, that is one show I never caught up with. It had already had several reincarnations by the time I got to the US in 1990, and I felt I was too far behind to try to catch up, so I never went into it. I wouldn't even know what would be a good place to start from if I were to stream it nowadays...

Most people just do the new show, I think?... Start from 2005, with Christopher Eccleston... 2006-2010 is a fan favorite, with David Tennant... 2011-2013/14 was the Matt Smith years... 2014-2017 was the Peter Capaldi years... and 2018 to now was the Jodie Whitaker years...

Most people seemed to like David Tennant and Matt Smith the most... and Jodie Whitaker the least (the new showrunner threw out all the mythos for awhile, to try and bring in a new audience)...

I tend to follow the average, I guess... Matt Smith had a great story arc across multiple seasons... David Tennant is a great doctor and had tons of emotional moments with companions... Eccleston suffered from bad monster CGI alot, I think... and I just didn't like the direction of the Capaldi doctor much, I think... sonic sunglasses and a guitar and stuff... I think my favorite element of the Capaldi era was the Master storylines...

If you start from 2005, you'll still have about a dozen seasons to watch... about 100-150 episodes?... not too bad... should last awhile... there's the benefit that European shows have shorter seasons, but sometimes longer episodes...

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Iain, thank you, my friend! I have been wanting to get to it, but I was embarrassed to ask anyone where to start, since it is such a known commodity among folks who love the genre, and they get a bit snarky if you don't know what to ask even... Thank you!

Constance Verity 01... I just finished it:) I really enjoyed it! Totally what I needed to chill. As I wrote in my review, this type of humor is not going to be enjoyable to everyone, but I did. The issue I had was with her monologues about how much she wants to be "normal"... Martinez did a great job explaining that pretty early on, so I found all the subsequent wallowing unnecessary... It actually started bugging me at one point. But that was the only real issue I had. The rest was fun. Loved Tia and the Ninja! Liked the conclusion too and was wondering, do you want to go straight into the next one, since they are easy, relaxing reads? Or when would you like to read that one?

In the US, the options are HBO Max and illicit streaming services... it was a sad day when Netflix stopped carrying Doctor Who, awhile back... once upon a time, you could watch basically everything on Netflix...

Choko, if you search online 'Dr Who watch online', that will give you results. Add free if you want free options. It may happen?

LMS: I don't mind the translation/proofreader notes. It's part of the webserial experience. lol Very different from reading a book. I would be annoyed if I was reading a book and a bunch of notes by random people showed up. I know that's one of the marketed features for Kindle. That you can see what other's highlighted/noted on the story as they read. They have to option to share that info.

And if you're giving the show a go, start with Eccleston, despite my talking down on that season... seasons 1-10 or so of the new series have connective tissue, even when the Doctor changes... generally the companion stays the same for at least one extra year, having to learn to love a new personality doctor... Rose Tyler from the Eccleston/Tenant transition, Clara Oswald from the Smith/Capaldi transition...

Matt Smith started fresh, because Tennant didn't have a companion his final year, he just did some specials throughout the year while performing Shakespeare in London, and had a memorable companion for his final episode...
