Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Julian, I just read the first book of the Bone World Saga by Cassiopeia Fletcher. The trilogy is on Audible Plus. First book will only be on AP until 02/22.

It's a dystopian with zombies. Writing + plot is rough around the edges, but the author has a decent build on characters. If you read it, I'd be happy to chat about it here. =)

Plan to read #2 & 3 later this week.

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Iain, you should buy the Andrea Vernon book while it's on sale. They all go on sale at some point.

alright... it is on my TBR... got sidetracked by other purchases...

message 704: by Soo (new) - rated it 3 stars

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments I think it's just #2 that's on the sale but it's cheaper than a credit. =D

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Moonlight Sculptor Mobile Game:

I'm Level 80+ Sculptor now. I spend about 2 hours playing a day. lol
Only crafted 1 statue, made a cloak, smithed a dagger and killed a ton of mobs. At least I've only died once? XD

message 706: by Choko (new) - rated it 4 stars

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Haha! Is it worth checking out? I was thinking about getting it:)

message 707: by Soo (new) - rated it 3 stars

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments OOOh if you get it and play, let me know! I only play solo and haven't tried to join a guild or anything. lol

Playing a bit like Weed in the story. With, uh, less training all the skills because you have to forage/gather.

When you start, you end up going to the Training Hall. At the Training Hall, leave your character in Auto-Attack mode & hit the sparring dummy until you get to level 10.

If you want the Sculptor class, you have to create a class-less character.

1st is the Training Hall, then explore the castle and run around to do the basic Quests and small Requests. It's super easy to level up the first 20-30 levels.

Only one game server for America. We should be able to friend each other. Heh

message 708: by Soo (new) - rated it 3 stars

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Getting the sculptor job requires you to go around without a class for a while. You do end up talking to the Sage like in the webnovel. He doesn't offer you the job until after you do a variety of quests.

message 709: by Choko (new) - rated it 4 stars

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Thanks for all the info! I will try it out soon:) I am still on the second volume of the books, but I will catch up:)

message 710: by Julian (new)

Julian | 759 comments @Soo I'll check it out in like 1-2 days after I finish the book that I already started! I'm always down to BR something new lol

Also Dresden Files is a no go for me. Perhaps it's the narrator or something but I just couldn't get into it much and found my mind wandering frequently

Tonari no Emily (emlfem) | 5115 comments Heh, yeah it's not for everyone, and if you don't want to read through the first few books to where both the writing and the narration improves that's definitely understandable.

message 712: by Julian (new)

Julian | 759 comments I went through two books now. I think at this point I can say the series just isn't for me. It'll be my controversial book opinion for the future lol

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments LoL Every time Malazan comes up, I feel like an announcer may wave their arms and shout, "Fight!" LOL

Wee~

The advantage to reading more/faster, is you can push through slogs fasters, and reach the good stuff...

And maybe see good series hiding in bad starts, that others don't have time for...

message 716: by Soo (new) - rated it 3 stars

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Yeah, but it sucks to make yourself read a story after reading a story that you're all excited about. It's just a bummer. I say move on to a story you will enjoy, and try again if you feel like it.

I think it took about 4-5 tries for me to get beyond Dresden #1. I did a mix of audiobook and print for that. Marsters' narration was SO bad back then! LoL

message 717: by Soo (new) - rated it 3 stars

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments *cracking up*

I'm listening to Defiance of the Fall: A LitRPG Adventure, and I realized that the way Zac fights could be easily Jason Voorhees without the mask and supernatural ghost deal.

I like the concepts and the way the author approached the story, but BOY do I wish he had made an effort to pay for a good editor or had the luck to have good beta readers.

Most of the story has a blatant 'echo' effect. He uses a certain word or phrase twice in a row. It happens over and over again.

I just wanna cut up the story and get rid of the fluff:

message 718: by Julian (new)

Julian | 759 comments Malazan I had no trouble reading. it had me hooked pretty early on. After the 2nd book I still don't see much of a hook

message 719: by Soo (new) - rated it 3 stars

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments If you didn't enjoy any of the setup, then it just isn't a story you're interested in reading.

Dresden Files & Malazan - Both of them took work for me to get into & having the option for audio definitely helped with both books.

Dresden: The fact that I had recently gotten into trying audiobooks was one of the reasons why I made myself listen to the audio while hiking/etc. At home, I'd switch back to the book.

At this point, I don't have as much patience for bad narration, but I will stick out bad narration for a good story. So, in that manner, I'm sure I'd still get past the rough patches and end up loving the series. I've re-read the series a few times now and look forward to re-reading at some point.

Malazan: I've had the hardback for #1 for years. Tried to read it many times and always put it down for another book. Zero chance I would have read Malazan without audio. I consider Malazan as a bundle pack that cost a few hundred to read. I don't feel like I wasted money, but I won't gain re-read value now that I've finished it.

I look forward to trying other books by Erickson that is not a part of the Malazan world. I have zero interest in reading more books about Malazan.

Both Malazan and Dark Tower series feel like the author is a bigger presence than the characters/stories they have written. That kills the fun of reading those particular stories for me.

Stephen King & Steven Erikson are good writers. I like King more than Erickson. Mostly because King's books invite readers to venture into the darkness and explore the range of imagination. Erickson is more pompous in his style and demands the reader to conform into his writing.

It's pretty cool that a book can have such a wide variety of reactions and thoughts. That's one of the awesome things about the reading groups. Being able to discuss what we think and share. =)

Julian | 759 comments @allWhohaveRead

would you consider Ready Player One to be litRpg? It shares many key elements of the genre however at the same time the characters aren't truly living in another game world.

message 721: by Soo (new) - rated it 3 stars

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments It's considered pre-LitRPG genre. I place it under Gamelit as the parent of game element type genre.

message 722: by Soo (new) - rated it 3 stars

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Currently listening to The Game of Kings (the title makes me think Game of Thrones haha) and I am reminded why it's fun to dive into historical fiction or read older work. There's a beauty of language that isn't as evident in our current time frame.

message 723: by Choko (new) - rated it 4 stars

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Exactly!!! I love what we read on daily basis, but darn it, if you have the concentration, it sure is nice to read some DD!!!

message 724: by Soo (new) - rated it 3 stars

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Travis Baldree, one of the prolific & popular LitRPG/etc narrators, has a book coming out in February.

I just saw a friend add this to his TBR: Legends & Lattes: A Novel of High Fantasy and Low Stakes

I'm intrigued! =D

Tonari no Emily (emlfem) | 5115 comments A hot cup of fantasy slice-of-life with a dollop of romantic froth. Now I am too xD

message 726: by Soo (new) - rated it 3 stars

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments I call Buddy Read for later end of February! I think we'll have to read it. Probably. It's only 258 pages.

message 727: by Soo (new) - rated it 3 stars

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments LMS: Vol14.6

Awww, Weed finally figured out a clue to solving one of the more obscure quests! I love the whimsical aspects that are in this series! =D

Choko, you'll love this part.

message 728: by Choko (new) - rated it 4 stars

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Looking forward to it:) I am in on the LitRPG BR too!

Weed has to go on a dungeon raid with his class. Classmates did research and found one by following clues in a porn book.

🤣🤣🤣

message 733: by Choko (new) - rated it 4 stars

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Haha! Typical:) Soo, I had not read off of this site before, but are all translations on about the same level?

message 734: by Soo (new) - rated it 3 stars

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments So, different groups do the translations and the posts are gathered into one place. The website I sent you is one of many popular light novel hubs.

I'm reading on a different website because I liked the format a bit more on that one vs the one I sent you.

Thus far, I think I've read about 4 different translation groups for the story. It's a bit tricky when they don't use the same names/spelling.

The porn book was a book in Royal Road. Not in real life. LOL

Choko, are you running into bad translations? Part of the reason why I sent you that website is because it has the option to change font type & size. Makes it easy to adjust settings to make it easier to read.

message 735: by Choko (new) - rated it 4 stars

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments No, not too bad, but it sometimes is a bit jarring when you get to a sentence that is kind of bad;) And I really appreciate this one, since you know I have issues with my eyes and I love that I can make it just as I need, font and background wise... Don't forget, I have never read anything like this before, and the translation is not the best, as you well know. I wonder if they are using too much electric translator, or if just the structure of the language is that different. It doesn't really bother me, it is just very different...

message 736: by Soo (new) - rated it 3 stars

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Actually, I've read a few translation notes saying that they used Google Translate. LOL! Which means the translation program has gotten better than when it was started, but still not as good as a person knowing both languages & translating.

The writing is definitely rough, but the story is entertaining.

message 737: by Choko (new) - rated it 4 stars

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments I agree... I am using it to get a break from the second Kaine book... That one is depressing the hell out of me...

Narilka | 5689 comments I'm about 50% through Blood Oath. Even though it's a shorter book, I just haven't had as many listening opportunities lately. Anyway. (view spoiler)

message 739: by Julian (new)

Julian | 759 comments I can't believe it, a book that I've had like a 5-6 month hold on is finally available!!! All other books have just been shoved aside for this special occasion lol.

message 740: by Julian (new)

Julian | 759 comments Something I've noticed:

Star Wars audiobooks have great narration that even includes background effects alongside various voices.

message 741: by Soo (new) - rated it 3 stars

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments -- Choko, yup. 2nd Caine book is mostly grim but the pay off will be totally worth it. Also, it's nice to have a lighter read when you need it.

-- Narilka, LOL! I like your devious mind. hehehe

-- Julian, what's the book? I call the audiobooks with good soundtrack/effects/etc as audiodrama. It's like when they used to do radio dramas.

message 742: by Julian (new)

Julian | 759 comments Fatal Alliance by Sean Williams.

Although I've listened to other Star Wars books in the past and they all seem to be like that.

message 743: by Julian (new)

Julian | 759 comments So far they are the only audiobooks to rival (and possibly surpass) Andrea Parsneau in terms of narration that I know of.

message 744: by Soo (new) - rated it 3 stars

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Glad you're having fun! =)

I haven't tried to read any of the stories for Star Wars or Star Trek. I have listened to the audiobooks for Alien. Those are well done.

Tonari no Emily (emlfem) | 5115 comments I listened to a couple BBC radio dramas.. I think most of them were Neil Gaiman adaptations. I wish they did more of those. Not every book works well for them (I didn't like Elantris as an audio drama), but when it works, its very entertaining.

Used up my Hoopla credits:

Northwest Angle -- Cork #11
A Conjuring of Assassins -- Chimera #2
Captain Vorpatril's Alliance -- almost done with re-read
The Last Adventure of Constance Verity (re-read #1, then catchup #2, for #3 release this year, January challenge)

Got 3 weeks to read all these... annoying that Chimera #3 never got an audiobook, for some reason...

message 747: by Choko (new) - rated it 4 stars

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments I would read the Constance Verity with you, if you like Iain. Just say when, starting with#1 , of course...

I thought you also wanted to read Finn Fancy Necromancy, but you never say anything when I bring it up around here ;)

Constance Verity is fine, tho... I'm reading Soulsmith now... will probably read Captain Vorpatril next... then I'm open to Constance Verity or whatever... think I need to keep an eye on reading Where the Drowned Girls Go & Tiassa for BRs, as well... actually, might be late on the Drowned Girls, already...

So I'll probably squeeze in Drowned Girls next... it'll be a 2hr read...

Dyrk Ashton saw my one-liner Rise of Gods review, apparently... 4 stars, and I mentioned how the early chapters introduced tons of characters, before settling down... was kinda surprised to see him in my notification feed for giving the review a like...

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments That is so cool!!! And yes, I am in for Fin Fancy Necromancy too:) I was actually wondering what new thing to start this morning, but you just reminded me of Soulsmith too... I'll start that:)
