Laura Tenfingers | 1132 comments Soo, I want to read Court of Broken Knives but I see it has very mixed reviews 🤔🤔

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments The Chiefs won! So my two favorite teams are meeting next week...

message 653: by Soo (new) - rated it 3 stars

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Laura, it's in my TBR and looks like something I would like, but I'm not sure if I want to get it with the mixed reviews by friends.

Cheers with Choko! Yay teams!

message 654: by Julian (new)

Julian | 759 comments @Choko Who do you plan on rooting for?

message 655: by Julian (new)

Julian | 759 comments Does anyone else have a problem where when you finish a really long book that you really enjoyed you have book paralysis in a sense?

I want to jump right in to the next book in the wandering inn but I'm afraid that I'm gonna catch up and then have to wait on weekly chapter releases online

message 656: by Soo (last edited Jan 24, 2022 01:09AM) (new) - rated it 3 stars

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Never fear, Julian! Reading the chapters online will take you a while. The audiobooks will keep you engaged for a few weeks and the volumes online will keep you reading until probably next year. Cause you're gonna want to read other books between. =D

Pirateaba may take more breaks now. Mostly due to juggling several projects and taking a break, but she still writes a good chunk of the year.

message 657: by Choko (new) - rated it 4 stars

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Julian, I know very well about book paralysis, but as most of us have learned, reading something else hefty in size helps separate for a while and actually helps you remember what was in the previous book better. Taking a step back lets you really appreciate what you have read and separate it from the next book in the series. This is why I make myself read other things in between... But this is my personal experience. Also, it is more fun to wait for others to catch up and share the discovery of the new volume with them:)

I am rooting for the Chiefs, but if they lose to the Bengals I am not going to be devastated, like I would be if anyone else was to beat them...

message 658: by Julian (new)

Julian | 759 comments Right now I'll be searching for a few in between books to read before jumping to the next volume. This has always been a problem of mine with series that I like a lot lol (WoT and Malazan too).

I'll be rooting for my Bengals to win. I never expected them to even make the playoffs this year to begin with

Tonari no Emily (emlfem) | 5115 comments Oh no another sale... Cant.. resist.. xD

message 660: by Soo (new) - rated it 3 stars

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments LoL Emily, yup. A problem we all share. LOL

Julian, I think Malazan is better to read all in a row. I've read WoT #1-7 a few times in a row. I keep realizing that #10 is not that far from the end of the series. I can do it! I can finish WoT! If I toss all the other books that I'm reading/listening aside and work on it. *goes off to read/listen to something else* XD

Narilka | 5685 comments Julian wrote: "Does anyone else have a problem where when you finish a really long book that you really enjoyed you have book paralysis in a sense? "

Yes. Another name for this is a book hangover ;)

message 662: by Brian (new)

Brian | 1681 comments I’m still on the fence about committing to Malazan. I’ve been slowly reading book 1. So many other books in my pile but I need to finish it someday. Doesn’t help I keep hitting the bookstore and Audible sales and loading up on more and more.

message 663: by Soo (new) - rated it 3 stars

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Narilka, there's no cure for book hangover. LOL
At least there's no downsides to it. No headache, nausea, etc.

Brian, there are plenty of people who love Malazan in the group. You can totally read it at your own pace and have people to talk to about it even if you're not in a buddy read.

Narilka | 5685 comments Just the short term disappointment of finishing a really good book and wondering how the heck anything else will compare after it lol

Especially if the book or scene caused an emotional response… tears or chills/etc…

message 666: by Julian (new)

Julian | 759 comments Random question but does anyone know of any way to play audiobooks from libby/hoopla/etc on a different audiobook player app on Android?

message 667: by Timelord Iain, Tech Support (new) - rated it 5 stars

Timelord Iain | 35277 comments Mod
I think those apps are built to prevent that... they don't let you download to PC or anything... that's the way to do it with audible... download to PC, shuffle into software, and download to phone, then it's accessible from tons of apps...

message 668: by Soo (new) - rated it 3 stars

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments I think you have to crack the OS on Android to do that, and it's not worth the hassle. There are enough OS updates (depending on brand) that the cracks don't always keep up with the changes & crash the system. I have friends that do it, but I don't bother.

message 669: by Julian (new)

Julian | 759 comments That's a shame, I was hoping there might be a simple way to use a different player app.

On a different note, does the Dresden Files series get better over time? Been listening to book #1 today and so far I've just not enjoyed it much.

message 670: by Brian (new)

Brian | 1681 comments I think Dresden gets way better. I struggled with the first one too.

message 671: by Soo (new) - rated it 3 stars

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Dresden get's better and totally worth reading the first few books to dive into the depths. The fun thing about Dresden Files is that all the details & events from the very start have an impact on the rest of the series. Butcher's writing gets better and (thankfully) James Marstens' narration matures over time. It just takes a few books.

message 672: by Timelord Iain, Tech Support (new) - rated it 5 stars

Timelord Iain | 35277 comments Mod
#1 is by far my least favorite... 2-3 get better... 4-5 is where the series gets great...

Also, as I've learned in my Buddy Reads, it's easy to get mired in all the Male Gaze in the books, and Murphy isn't characterized very well in the first 3 books... that's fixed in book 4, I think...

Soo is right that everything matters, tho... even the stuff in the first 1-3 books connects into the larger mythology...

message 673: by Julian (new)

Julian | 759 comments I'll have to give the series a chance beyond the first book then. So far the first book has been a snooze fest and the narration feels like it's something from the early 1900s

message 674: by Julian (new)

Julian | 759 comments Now are the dresden files similar to malazan in that if you spend too much time in between books you'll struggle?

message 675: by Timelord Iain, Tech Support (new) - rated it 5 stars

Timelord Iain | 35277 comments Mod
Crank up the speed :D

Best part of book 1 is the intro of Toot Toot (a very important character) :D

And I'd say hardly, on the difficult mythos... Dresden Files is largely a case files series, so the stories are pretty self-contained, with overarching elements that build over time, and a growing cast of enemies and allies that cycle in and out (occasionally some die, but alot limp away to fight another day)...

There are 17 books so far, and the series is expected to be about 22 case files and a finale trilogy that deals with the big bad of the series (view spoiler)

message 676: by Soo (new) - rated it 3 stars

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments No struggles with Dresden Files. Butcher didn't write the story to be obtuse to readers. You can break up the series & be fine.

Brian | 1681 comments Julian wrote: "I'll have to give the series a chance beyond the first book then. So far the first book has been a snooze fest and the narration feels like it's something from the early 1900s"

I'd say stick with it. I was in the same boat as you on book 1. I read it and it required Iain and Soo to keep on me to continue. I am so happy I did, as it get so good you won't want to take a break between books.

message 678: by Soo (new) - rated it 3 stars

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Totally puzzled by GR's weird mistake of listing a book as Want to Read when it should have posted as Read.

Yay? That's one more book I read in 2020 that probably didn't get posted?

message 679: by Julian (new)

Julian | 759 comments Would anyone like to BR any new book? I'm having a hard time deciding what to read next that isn't a reread and am searching for new books

message 680: by Soo (last edited Jan 24, 2022 08:28PM) (new) - rated it 3 stars

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Black Sun is bad. Maybe it'll go from bad to ok before it ends. It's not a good sign when 3 out of 4 narrators are detached from the story & it shows in their stilted narration.

The opener was great! Brutal, bleeding, disturbing and death. Great way to get the reader's attention. Followed by inconsistencies and a bunch of blah blah blah.

- Poorly placed time jumps into the past.
- Multiple Characters & Only 2 are well-developed.
- Doesn't seem to have a grasp on what kind of lore the story has and to make it a part of the story because it is a part of the world. It's a lot of "let me tell you how to think" + "just go with it when I don't stick to the outline that I gave you to think about".

Did you check the Current Buddy Reads? You may want to jump into one of those?

What's on your TBR (or books you have at hand) that you want to read?

Vagabond BR options list. It's incomplete but has some ideas on there.

What are you in the mood for?

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Yelling at myself about the Audible Sale:

Don't be tempted into saving $2.50 bucks for potentially bad LitRPG books!!! Don't do it!

Tonari no Emily (emlfem) | 5115 comments I ended up rather liking Black Sun myself :) But yeah, I can see about the narration..

@Julian, wanna read Crisis in the Red Zone: The Story of the Deadliest Ebola Outbreak in History, and of the Outbreaks to Come ? xD

Reminds me of why I cut myself off from Steam Sales years ago... 90% off is great, if I ever actually play the game...

It's hard for me to just jump into a BR, since most of what I read are series, and I'm already in the middle of dozens/hundreds of series...

I have a couple standalones coming up, like The Kaiju Preservation Society, but that doesn't come out for another couple weeks...

Most of my rando BRs come from Audible sales...

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Dark Horse #8 comes out on 02/08! I'm totally expecting at least Brian and Iain to join me for that one. Haha

message 687: by Soo (new) - rated it 3 stars

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Black Sun: I have whiplash from the lightning fast switches in writing that's amazing + evocative and crash into poor telling with flat dimensions and lower quality in wording. Two characters are well developed and the others are not core figures but not as well established. As far as I know, this is not a YA novel, but the writing makes me think it's YA.

I liked her debut novel more, but the issues she had in that one are just more obvious & glaring in this one.

Upside: The segments of great writing makes me hopeful and I'll keep trying her books.

Brian | 1681 comments I am in!

Julian | 759 comments @Emily I want to but my library doesn't have it so I need to go buy it first!

Going to give book 2 of Dresden Files a shot

message 693: by Soo (new) - rated it 3 stars

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments If it helps, the Dresden Files aren't really a mystery. There's a mystery thread, but it's only a smart part of the overall story. I'd say the first things to pop up in my head for Dresden Files would be secret societies, magic, fae and power struggles between the mortal & long lived. =)

Julian, did you check on Hoopla? Both Hoopla & Overdrive only had the ebook for Ebola book for me.

Tonari no Emily (emlfem) | 5115 comments Gotcha. My library has it on Overdrive so just let me know :)

message 695: by Julian (new)

Julian | 759 comments Hoopla seems to be lacking for the most part compared to libby for my library. If it's not on libby then it for sure isn't on hoopla 99% of the time

message 696: by Soo (new) - rated it 3 stars

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments It's not the app so much as what's available at the library that the app is linked to. Like all of the books that I've been reading on Hoopla (different county library) used to be available at my library. The usage limit/etc must have expired at my library, because a bunch of books are no longer available.

On Hoopla, I got a bundled pack #1-3 of a story. Travis Baldree is the narrator. Two GR friends have read the first book. One good review and one mixed review for #1.

Will report how it goes. Heh

message 697: by Julian (new)

Julian | 759 comments I think the problem is that hoopla is linked to my local library but overdrive is linked to the entire state's collection of libraries

message 698: by Soo (new) - rated it 3 stars

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments I wish my Overdrive was linked to the state system vs just the county. That should make the options huge! =D

I looked into interlibrary loans and the system is old. It was easy to sign up for it, but I'm not sure how useful it would be for digital loans. I have to look up the book catalog information and put in a request with ISBN/etc information. On the surface, it looks like more work to a slim potential to borrow a book.

Yup. It made me feel lazy. XD

message 699: by Julian (new)

Julian | 759 comments That sounds like too much work. I would end up rarely using a system that annoying

message 700: by Timelord Iain, Tech Support (new) - rated it 5 stars

Timelord Iain | 35277 comments Mod
I lucked out/in... living in a state capitol of 120k people, my local library is nice and big (2+ stories and like a quarter block downtown)... and I think it's linked into the big state network...

And none of the no-books nonsense Brian has to deal with

I barely see the value in Hoopla outside of books... for shows, you have to check each episode out separately I think, not a whole season for 1 credit... and movies/comics will be over fast...
