Vagabond Treehouse (2023) [Beware of Chicken 3 - December 4th]

Side Character Transmigrations: The Final Boss is No Joke
Basically, Shi Sheng is a jerk author that loves to write cliffhangers, drop stories into deep freeze and kill off protagonists. 🤣☠️
Quote from Ch1:
Authors who write cliffhangers will be punished.
She's transmigrated into stories where the side characters had bad ends. There's a System that does the bare minimum and threatens Sheng with death to complete missions.
🤣🤣🤣
Only a few chapters in, but highly amused.

Kamilah Cole - So Let Them Burn
Bethany Baptiste - The Poisons We Drink
Molly X Chang - To Gaze Upon Wicked Gods
Frances White - Voyage of the Damned
KM Enright - Mistress of Lies
RM Virtues - Drag Me Up series
Thea Guazon - The Hurricane Wars

Gonna go read the book blurbs for the listed books, but I'm not gonna say I'll definitely read them. Cause, ya know, gotta want to read it due to interest.
Also, personally, I'm not a fan of all the LGBT focused books that came out in waves like they didn't exist before and had to fill some made up void. It became a social political deal and I am fairly meh about that.
I was happily reading stories about all sorts of people, genders, etc without specifically looking for it. I will continue to do that, but I haven't had a good experience with most of the new publications labeled as LGBT.

Now I'm gonna find sample of the book & read a page as punishment.

Couple of the titles on the list were interesting, but not published yet. Will leave it up to fate & chance on if I read them later. Which is probably 65-80% of my reading. 😆
@Elena: welcome… this is your typical treehouse bookclub :D
It’s alot more random than other sanctioned bookclubs around here, and well-structured weekly/bi-weekly/monthly Buddy Reads with 1 book per thread…
We just talk about what we’re reading/finding, random stuff, and squeeze in the occasional Buddy Read when we have time… we did alot more last year, before me and Nirkatze started signing up for 75% of the normal Buddy Reads…
This year, we did a few early year, a few in August/September, and Beware of Chicken 3 this month, a new release in a successful BR from September… to give you an idea what this thread is like… we’ll be making a new thread in a few weeks for 2024-2025…

Welcome! Feel free to hop in with whatever random read that pops up. Our little group is super informal.

The whole series is like a Rocky training montage. 😄
Training/Battles with light romance thread, some politics and interesting elements on the VR training and abilities.
I'm on book 4, Vanguard. It's good but will be disappointed that there isn't a book 5.

I saw that! She effed around and found out for sure.

re: Captcha Checks--those just seem to be getting more and more constant... grrr
Added Codename: Freedom to TBR list... is the series done at book 4 then?

re: ReviewBomberGate--what I was really impressed by, at that link, was the amount of research that went into figuring it all out... I appreciate the amount of work Xiran Jay Zhao put into it, and also the video they put together explaining the whole process...
I'm thinking I might toss the list to the general pool to see if anyone is interested in BR when they come out...

I read all the blurbs of the harassed authors and read few pages of Virtue's Drag Me Up. I wasn't a fan of the writing. 🙃🫣

LoL
Varic is made uber OP x 6 from the get go.

I like Will Wight's books mostly. But I do struggle with a few of his.

Thanks Soo. Just downloaded it

Yes Audible +

Ship is more OP than Varic.
Well, in attitude. Heh
I thought I would up the speed from 2.55x but I think Travis Baldree is narrating at a faster rate? Could be an audio distortion in memory comparison, but Baldree's narration at 2.55x seems to be the same as the audio cast in Zero Tolerance at 3.25x. 🤔

Chapter 1: OP x6
Chapter 2: Saved the Day x6
Chapter 3: Now what?
Chapter 4: Last Horizon McGuffin...

I think I slowed it down, as well... I feel like Travis's speed varies by book, or I can handle higher speeds with certain books/genres more, or something...

Captain, Ch21: 🫣🫥👎
It's a less cool crew of uber OP characters. Also, it's obvious that the book needs more editing and polishing. Lots of broken phrases vs full sentences and repeated words.
The whole knowledge of 6 lives in one that sorta gives foreknowledge makes the story kinda dull.
Varic teaching combat magic is the best part.
Ch28: Varic's Dad 🙄🧐💩

Plus there's an issue with math.
The spell in the beginning has up to 7 light markers. The point of the spell was to bridge alt dimensions and gain abilities. Let's say 1 marker per dimension.
By end of spell, 6 markers are lite. That should mean Varic gained from 6 dimensions. So, it should have been 6 lives & deaths. I don't see how Varic's original life would count as one of the 6. He is currently living that life and not dying to take from other dimensional lives.
So either Varic gained 6 NEW SET OF memories & skills + deaths, or he gained 5 sets. Except later, there's a scene that makes the count questionable again.
It's bad writing. I went back to beginning a few times. 🧐😶🌫️🙄
This all happened in Ch1. No spoilers. 🤣🤣🤣

The goblins make me think of Rags & co in Wandering Inn... >.<

DCC has a great start! The event speed stays fairly consistent.

Horizon: (view spoiler)
My Hypothesis is a way cooler spin than whatever is the real spin on the series. 🤣🤣🤣
the ship is clearly off it's rocker... not sure it has a machiavellian plan...
What if some of the bloopers were real, tho, like (view spoiler)

I just finished re-reading The Line of Polity... been 7 months since I re-read Gridlinked and the 2 prequel stories, and this is as far as I got with the series, when I tried it in 2018 with Terry and maybe a few others (I've been necroing the old 2018 thread and talking to Terry, a group lurker that isn't around much)... I honestly don't remember reading this 2nd Ian Cormac book before, but I did...
And, this is the first time in awhile where I finished a book and kinda feel like I need someone to explain it to me, and the internet isn't being very helpful :D...
The book has 2-3 main plots/sub-plots, that all converge on this planet, and go haywire to great effect... and then about 90% gets wrapped up tidily, with some dangling elements for the future of the main story arc... but there's this weird framing story throughout, with a mother reading fairytales to her kid(?), and the stories start warping/being rewritten, and eventually are pretty clearly pretty thinly veiled stories about Ian Cormac and what's going on in the main plots of the book... and then in the epilogue I think the mom dies in the vacuum of space and the son is now with an adult male telling him stories instead...
and NONE of this is ever explained... or if it was, I blinked and missed it...

I have Prador Moon on my read in sooner 2024 list.
I read The Departure (The Owner) by Asher, Neal (2013) Paperback #1 a while back. This trilogy is on Audible Plus. Probably wrap this up first.
I don't remember any fairytales in Departure.

How do ya'll feel about it?

How do ya'll fee..."
I personally don't mind... It is just one of those things:)))

I've been laughing in each chapter. The title was cut down from Master Martial Artist Woke Up as a Concubine. 🤣🤣🤣
Her reborn name is Soju. 🤣🤣🤣

Might jump in on Captain since I'm pretty much caught up now on BRs...
