It's alright... first in series, has a fair bit to setup...
The cosmic danger stuff is thrown in hard at the start, then mostly dealt with, but I think there's some nefarious hand guiding these apocalyptic scenarios?... Just because the MC used his multiverse knowledge to avert 5 known threats doesn't mean everything is solved...
By the 25% mark, he's found evidence that events are changing, compared to his multiverse memories...
Then he seeks out and finds the alien ship that the series is named after (Last Horizon), and is assembling a crew to help protect the galaxy... that's the real plot of the series, I think...
Early on / so far, the MC has some real Eithan Aurelius vibes... feels almost like Abidan, but with space ships and lasers tacked onto Mystic Arts / magic stuff...

12/7/23 on Audible

No, but I feel like it's been ready for awhile, just stuck in Audible Production Pipeline, like seems to happen sometimes with lesser known authors I like...

Awesome!

😆
On a sad note, we may never see a new release for Space Team. Looks like author is cranking out lots of short mysteries.
Latest 2 Anita Blake books - Reviews on the books have me 🫥🫥🫥 about buying the audios. I found one at my library and the other one is on Spotify. But! Spotify only lets you listen to 15hrs per month. So that is just enough time if you add in potential rewind to listen buffer. So my plan is to get those two done in next few days. I love the core story aspects of the series, but the real life counseling junk needs to be cut out of this fictional universe.
Upside: Tenacity was a hoot! After 2 meh books, feels like DK has gotten back in groove to a true Completionist Chronicles book. Adventures, humor, weird learning hijinx, cause & consequences, etc.
Yea... his writing plans seem to have veered hard from space comedy to mystery, after his hand was broken 5-6 years ago... I lost hope awhile ago, honestly...

I think I want a Kaiju one more than Starter Villian.
How bout you guys?

Agree about more Kaiju stuff... I'm leaning into what others have said about enjoying Starter Villain, but not as much as Kaiju... new Old Man's War is interesting, since people are doing a BR next year of the existing stuff...
@Nirkatze: I've been assembling my 2024 BR list/spreadsheet (advantages of being the Tech Support, and just cloning the 2023 sheet for myself, and as theoretical prep for making the 2024 group sheet soon, as participant info comes in... need to ping other mods on that...
ANYWAY... you need to put more Vorkosigan on the sheet, I'll definitely be re-reading them all, after doing the first 2 on the schedule...
Also, personally need to request those tracks I listed a few weeks ago for sequels and Dungeon Crawler Carl...

@Brian: the Tales of Beauchelain & Korbal Broach finally made it to audio, today, after years as ebook-only Malazan content... they're them 2 necromancers that pop up in early Malazan books... tall skinny one and shorter fat one... do weird stuff... I read a few of them, back on my first read-through of the series, but having to do ebook was half the reason I fell off on the Buddy Read... anyway... it's 2 omnibuses of 3 short stories... I think that covers all or most of the short stories... Erikson kept releasing more for awhile...

First round of Audible Sale, I got 24 books for $86 and 1 credit...
Haul:
Season of Skulls -- $4 pre-order for next week
Play of Shadows & Crucible of Chaos (prequel) -- pre-orders for the Greatcoats sequel series... kinda surprised there's a super long prequel to the new book, coming out in a few weeks...
The Warrior's Apprentice, since I can get the rest from Audible Plus / Hoopla, as mentioned elsewhere...
Beaufort Scales 4-7
2x Noobtown books I was missing, since I got the rest on sales the past 6 months
5x October Daye books I didn't have on Audible yet, including the newest one, Innocent Sleep
8x Malazan books I was missing, from the prequel/sequel trilogies and the Essemont series... I have everything but 1 Esslemont book and the new Beauchelain & Korbal Broach omnibusses now, thanks to a ton of sales this year...
My one credit was the Mortal Techniques omnibus...
My Audible purchase focus has definitely been on tomes & things I constantly re-read... alot of other things I'm fine reading in my other apps, without too much worry of battery drain at work...

And I'm like 99% sure I'll be getting that NOLA library card before the start of the year... especially if the Stephanie Plum BR happens, since the first 16 are on there, and would drain my local library credits...
I think I just used half my day, cloning the 2023 spreadsheet... wiping my data, inputting 2024 data, cross-referencing what I already own, what's available on Hoopla/etc, what to get on sale, etc...
That's why book housekeeping falls by the wayside for me, sometimes... I could have read a whole book in this amount of time :D

There is a short for $1.99 that is not listed as part of the series: The Century Blade: A Mortal Techniques short story :)

I'm gonna use the 18th of the month for scheduling alot of those LitRPG/etc BRs, to match with the Vigor Mortis BR in December...
I'm gonna setup some for reading in existing areas since they make sense, and others through the form:
December: BoC 3 in here, next week-ish... since Vigor Mortis is already on the 18th, as mentioned above
January: Wind Runner in the Wandering Inn thread (18th, from here on down)
February: Vigor Mortis 3 in new thread
March: Titan of Baleros in the Wandering Inn thread
April/May: Burning Witch in new threads
I'll schedule Dungeon Crawler Carl in new threads on the 25th of the month... 11th & 4th are already pretty full... starting with book 2 in January... not sure if it's worth making a thread for #1, if it's just Nirkatze catching up with me and Emily (not sure if Choko read or not, or if she has time, with catching up on old BRs and chemo recovery... she's been reading alot of In Death and October Daye, lately)...

Second reply to this... I think I liked the first half of the book more than the second... the first half was a nice mix of sci-fi and cultivation... the second half, especially the last 25%, felt like it devolved/rushed right into a Dreadgod/etc scenario with top level threats/combat...

Requests made for all the BR plans, from the past few weeks around here...
And just know... I haven't forgotten about Craig Schaefer... still checking occasionally for the audio release of The Wise Men of Gotham
EDIT: with the release of Harmony Black #7 last week, Schaefer gave an update that the audio for Wise Men was in final quality checks by Audible, for release...
So, in the near future, I'd like to go forward with our plans to read The Hungry Dreaming & The Wise Men of Gotham...
These are stories set in the same world as Ghosts of Gotham & A Time for Witches, following different characters (also including reporters), with some Hecate overlap... which we read 12-18 months ago, now...

If there's an audio I'll try to make it work!

If Nirkatze read Dungeon Crawler Carl around December 25th to the end of the year, and Narilka started near the beginning of January, that would still count as a Buddy Read by the competition rules :D

Audio is definitely coming soon... as soon as it does, I'll be looking to schedule... probably March/April for the 2 books... some of the ongoing stuff like Iron Druid Chronicles, and Eli Monpress will be winding down around then...

I picked all those up too... >.<
@Iain--will request rest of Vorkosigan series then! I'll put you down as second.
I've been waiting for you to finalize the schedule for the LitRPG plan for the year, glad to see that! Adding to tracker...
I wish the Dungeon Crawler Carl books were cheap enough to buy in the sale... it's gonna be all credits, sadly... unless they pop up in something else... Still want to read though!
Also looking forward to a new Old Man's War--and I'd also prefer something Kaiju-esque over Starter Villain, though both were fun. And I still do also want to continue with Ghosts of Gotham series. The Holly Black books were another series I picked up in the recent sale.

Finalized through summer... we can decide on what to do the rest of the year, then... maybe transition to more Cultivation stuff similar to Cradle, if we can find anything?... anyway, that's for later...
And Holly Black or Harmony Black?... Harmony Black is another Craig Schaefer series...

I've read most of what Matt Dinnamon has published and enjoyed them all. Pretty sure I just need to catch up on DCC.

@Soo--was that 7.49 with the current sale, or is that a standard discount with any KU borrow? I'm thinking of trying the 1 month thing... Also good to know about BoC2 & 3.
Nirkatze wrote: "@Iain--I meant Harmony Black... I get my names mixed up a lot, in BRs too, lol.

If you got Harmony Black, we need to read everything... it's part of a mega-series, until it isn't...
Harmony Black is introduced in Daniel Faust... then there's the Revanche Cycle, and it ends with Wisdom's Grave... then Harmony Black and Daniel Faust continue with their own mostly standalone stories past the end of the mega-series (altho those standalones have dangling connections to what came before...
We can talk about setting up a BR next summer, once we do Midnight Scoop (Hungry Dreaming & Wise Men of Gotham), and Alex Verus and October Daye starts winding down...
It's 18-20 books, and there's 2 reading orders, since Revanche is a more medieval fantasy in another dimension, but was published (and becomes relevant) around Daniel Faust 5, when the Harmony Black series also starts...
This'll be my 3rd/4th/5th readthrough, I lose track, but I love this series/author...

I couldn't resist the $0.99 deals for a few audios that are on Audible +. 😆🙃 Borrow KU & cheap audio purchase.

@Iain--I'm on board. Didn't pick up the Faust books because the discount wasn't as good, but they're in my wishlist...
New Harmony Black came out a week or 2 ago… should be on audio long before we need it, since
There’s 20+ books to read before then…
There’s 20+ books to read before then…

Lots of active scenes in Beware of Chicken 3. Which is how the writer seems to roll. He likes to setup stuff in first half of volume and tie up some of the mini-arcs in the second half of the volume.
BoC Volume 2 on Royal Road was cut in half and changed to books BoC 2 & 3.
I went & checked out RR to see what's up. Volume 3 has been updated to Volume 4. More than likely, 4 will become books 4 & 5. When I stopped reading on RR, I paused at a flashback portion. I wasn't as big of a fan of the flashbacks. Pacing goes up and down in the serial, and I wasn't in the mood to read about the 'past'.
Going by the number of pages on RR, I think Volume 4 is close to done. So potential ebook/audiobook next summer?

Classic Web Serial problems
Imagine if Pirateaba just released Volume 8 as a single 500hr audiobook :D

It would be cheap with 1 Audible credit! 🤣🤣🤣
Devolution: A Firsthand Account of the Rainier Sasquatch Massacre is also on Spotify. Planning to listen to that in December.

LOL that would be insane.
And we would all listen in like, one sitting... no sleep... would have to buy a new ipod just to load it...
@Soo, re: Servant Mage--I've read some Kate Elliott and really enjoyed what I read, but haven't read that one yet.

Looks like Servant Mage was published last year. New goodies to try out. 😎

Dang most of my light read audios are narrated by Travis Baldree!
Getting my 50 in to meet GR goal is gonna be rough.
If I had made any notes on my LN reading, I'd easily be in 250+ range now, but I didn't note it anywhere. It would be weird to update GR with wishy washy sometime in 2023 dates.
