Malazan never ends... Brian read the 10 main books + 1-2 Esslemont books, I think, but there's still 4-5 more main Esslemonts, then the prequel trilogies of both authors and sequel trilogies of both authors (some unfinished), and the Bauchelain & Korbal Broach novellas, and the Goats of Glory short... THEN you're truly done...
I'm still stuck back at the midway point of the series... last one I read was the flashback one with Bug/Tehol?... #5, I think, after the first Karsa Orlong book... doing 40 BRs/month isn't conducive to long tome reads on the side...

if it's true (which it might be), you gotta understand they're not true POVs... they're a device to illustrate the hecticness of battle (I think)... I heard something similar, and it's like panning around a battlefield and focusing on the characters for a few seconds/sentences, right before they kill somebody or die themselves...

Oh that is not terrible, the way the person presented it they were true POVs and I was like is the book a million pages long? How can anyone manage that? But what you said makes sense and I like that technique for battle scenes. Maybe one day lol

I'd say most books have a couple dozen POVs, and focus on different characters in each book, not always in every book... and the POVs can be clustered into groups/factions...

The same person who counted the deaths in the John Wick movies? lol

We should put some LitRPGs on the official BR list next year... maybe let Nirkatze start with Carl #1, and we continue with #2+... then there's the new releases of Unorthodox Farming & Beware of Chicken as they releases, and I also picked up some Bunny Ears & Noobtown & am waiting for Vigor Mortis 4 to read 3-4...
After that, I'd have to start digging into my backlog of paused LitRPGs or find new ones...

Yeah sounds good to me! I've been liking all the LitRPGs I've tried so far
Every single November discount item from Audible, of any interest to me, seems to be $8... and I can get it for $7.49 with KU Whispersync pricing... so I guess I can just wait...
I need to assemble a list of LitRPGs we can read... generally, once I don't need to re-read the first 3-6-9 for you guys to catch up :D

TFW You only have 350hrs of audio scheduled for the month, and you read closer to 550hrs last month... so many decisions to make...
I used my last 2 spare Hoopla credits, last month, to continue my Psy-Changeling re-read, and a random recommendation:
Assistant to the Villain -- maybe I should have read the blurb... it was an impulse checkout... seems to be a fantasy romance, based on Tiktok videos?...

Tried Assistant to the Villain... it's not great... gonna DNF and move on, at 25%...
It's... not great...
A number of top reviews talk about how it's flat, unfunny, cringey...
I think it's a bit stilted, and also, not alot is happening (which is kind of a thing in cozy, slice of lifey books, but you gotta be loving the characters/scenes)...

I like the idea of officially scheduling some of those LitRPGs--I've bee doing good on date-scheduled BRs, but definitely slacking on my looser ones... Need to add them to my official roster...
LitRPG Time/ideas:
1) Dungeon Crawler Carl -- Nirkatze/other read #1 in December... everyone else joins for 2-6 in January to May...
2) BOC 3 comes out on the 21st of November...
3) The Unorthodox Faming guy has another series starter, called Death Loot & Vampires I want to try... more on the fence about First Line of Defence: A Sci-Fi LitRPG Adventure
4) Wandering Inn: I think you guys read The Wandering Inn: Book 8 - Blood of Liscor already, you need to read The Wandering Inn: Book 9 - Tears of Liscor, next for me is The Wandering Inn: Book 10 - The Wind Runner, and The Wandering Inn: Book 11 - The Titan of Baleros comes out November 14th... no idea when the next one comes out yet, but I imagine April at the earliest... the volume 1 re-record is happening before book 12... I think the re-record will be out around February?...
5) If you guys do Vigor Mortis 2, you can probably talk me into doing Vigor Mortis 3, even without knowing when Vigor Mortis 4 is coming out...
6) I'd like to try some other of Thundamoo's work: Bioshifter: Volume 1 is out now, Bioshifter: Volume 2 comes out tomorrow, and she has a Patreon-only serial going, about superheroes vs eldritch monsters from another dimension that I wouldn't mind seeing someday...
7) Once all that's done, I can consider the The Mayor of Noobtown series I've been picking up on Audible sales, and Cinnamon Bun sound cutesy, winning through the power of friendship...
So, if we follow the structure that's been going strong in the planning thread, lately, of planning sequential buddy reads, with new ones picking up when old ones end, we can do:
Track 1:
Dungeon Crawler Carl December/January to May
Noobtown 1-7: June to December
Track 2:
November: Wandering Inn 9: Tears of Liscor && Vigor Mortis 2
December: Beware of Chicken 3
January: Wandering Inn 10: Wind Runner
February: Vigor Mortis 3
March: Wandering Inn 11: Titan of Baleros
April: Death, Loot, & Vampires (Vampire Vincent 1)
May: Cinnamon Bun 1
June: Bioshifter, Volume 1
July: Cinnamon Bun 2
Sugust: Bioshifter, Volume 2
September: Cinnamon Bun 3
October: First Line of Defense
November: Cinnamon Bun 4
December: Cinnamon Bun 5
Honestly, track 2 is much more flexible... and I didn't even add in untitles Wandering Inn releases, or possible future releases of Dungeon Crawler Carl, Vigor Mortis, etc, that are sure to pop up and want to be added to the list...
We could/should probably just schedule the Carl stuff and November to May of the Track 2 list, and revisit in the Spring for populating the 2nd half of 2024... and, of course, I want some feedback... this just gives me something I can search for in the searchbar, since we've been mentioning this for a week+ now, and I've been neglecting actually compiling anything...

Are there any other LitRPG series to recommend collecting? And I guess I'd kind of like to try the first one before buying the whole series, just in case it doesn't turn out that good... one I'm curious about is the Mother of Learning 1 series, too... and The Prince Has No Pants... also weren't we talking about a Stuff and Nonsense Threadbare read at some point? Not to add a ton more things to the list though!
I like the idea of scheduling specific books for specific months though--try to get to it before the end of the month! I can do that!

LitRPGs don't tend to be in libraries as much, it seems...
Alot of the ones I mentioned seem to be on sale alot... altho the sale prices aren't always the greatest...
Death, Loot, & Vampires is $8 on Audible this month... so is Noobtown 7...
I got Noobtown 4-5 in September... which makes me think 6 was available in October...
Dungeon Crawler Carl & Cinnamon Bun & Noobtown 1 in August...
Beware of Chicken books and Thundamoo books in May, August, and September...
The fact that so many of these have been on sale in the past 6 months, probably means your best shot at them is the next sitewide sale (Black Friday?)...
I forgot to include Princess of Potential and Burning Witch in the list... but they're like LitRPG adjacent... more cozy :D
I didn't mention Stuff & Nonsense, except when on sale, because I already did a re-read in this Book Club with Soo & Narilka a year or 2 ago, and don't really feel like another re-read yet... you guys can definitely go ahead and read...
Mother of Learning is definitely one I've heard of, but not looked too much into...
And I tend to buy alot of my LitRPGs with Whispersync... so many are free checkouts on Kindle Unlimited, and then only $7.49 from Audible... so I can buy whenever I'm ready to continue... but I know that doesn't work for Nirkatze...

I don't have all the LitRPGs I listed yet, either, honestly... I just got a bit scheduling happy towards the end... and scheduling gives me more of a reason to pick them up along the way, if I like the earliest ones...

Guess I was too ambitious...
Emily showed interest in continuing with Dungeon Crawler Carl 2+, after reading DCC1 in September during our LitRPG sale spree, and I read a few weeks ago...
Wandering Inn 8/9/10++ is on the table...
Beware of Chicken (3) is a group favorite...
We could include Princess of Potential and Burning Witch 1-2++ in this area, even tho it's just cozy fiction...
Vampire Vincent, First Line of Defense, and Bioshifter, just seemed like low commitment space fillers from authors we've tried before... Unorthodox Farming guy and Vigor Mortis / Hive Mind Hugs gal...
Cinnamon Bun & Noobtown are just random sales pickups on my part, to round out the year, and I can easily try in my own time...
Of my previous forays into LitRPGs, I don't have many recommendations, other than Threadbare & Wandering Inn... most others I've tried, have grown to annoy me for various reasons, later on, or after only a few books...

Possible alternate "Tracks" with room for growth and ideas from other people:
Track 1:
Just Dungeon Crawler Carl... Nirkatze can maybe try in December... me & Emily can continue with 2+ in January, regardless...
Track 2:
November: Wandering Inn 9
December: Vigor Mortis 2 & Beware of Chicken 3
January: Wandering Inn 10
February: Vigor Mortis 3
March: Wandering Inn 11
April/Mary: Burning Witch 1-2+?
June++: options in previous post or something else?... pretty much trimmed out starting new things and focused on continuing things people already started...
I'm gonna mention doing Princess of Potential this month in the Cozy thread...

BOC 3 should probably be here, since it's just been us... and it's just a single new release... I've mentioned the series in a few other threads, and nobody has piped up as having read them, I don't think...
Dungeon Crawler Carl can have it's own threads, since it's near the beginning... and that's kind of why I was waiting to start 2, so there's the option of doing a BR/thread of #1 for people that haven't read it yet, in December, before continuing on... just need to check that more than one person is interested in catching up, at the time...

Actually... if we mention it now, we might be able to rope in Paula... if they notice... looks like they picked the series up, at the same time we did, on the Audible Sale, probably... and read both in a week...
Semi-Outside of LitRPGs, I'd recommend picking up things from Drew Hayes and Andrew Sieple on sale...
Seiple wrote Threadbare and it's connected LitRPGs, but I also liked his DIRE: Saga series, about a benevolent supervillain... this started as a fanfic of the WORM web-serial world, and became it's own thing...
Drew Hayes has written a number of series, now, but started with his superhero university web serial: Super Powereds: Year 1... these days, he has an Audible Original series of Sherlockian stories that reminds me a bit of the premise for Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency... The Case of the Damaged Detective... the Villains' Code series about interning for a supervillain while accidentally making friends with alot of heroes... Forging Hephaestus... the NPCs series about the unlucky inhabitants of a D&D world, and the havoc wreaked by players playing Tabletop RPG games in that world... NPCs... and some standalones...

The one LitRPG I tried when it was new, and might revisit, now that there's more, is Archemi Online: Dragon Seed
It's one of those post-apocalyptic VRMMO LitRPGs, where the world is falling apart after World War 3 and a deadly virus, and the MC gets a chance to upload into an MMORPG world permanently to "survive"... the blurbs compare it to Final Fantasy and JRPGs... the MC gets a dragon egg early on, and has military instincts for combat survival, and that's honestly about all I remember... but I never gave the series a chance to go downhill, I just was never in the mood to continue, when new audiobooks finally released, and forgot about it...

I don't know the meaning of pacing myself... if anything, the re-reads are me pacing myself... and I've been doing hundreds of those a year, for years now... sometimes nothing old is catching my interest, and I have to lean into more new stuff, I guess...
2023: 206 of 447 books were re-reads, so far...
2022: 146 of 317 books
2021: 48 of 283 books
2020: 111 of 506 books
2019 and before: hard to say... didn't track in spreadsheet yet, or spreadsheet didn't exist...
It's definitely been prevalent, the last couple years tho, to keep momentum, when I otherwise might start slumping...
I've already got like 50 re-reads on the docket for next year...

Regarding this year's schedule--as long as we have a schedule, I'm pretty happy with anything. I'll figure it out. Unless I end up disliking what we're reading. In which case I'll probably hate-read/finish anyway. I'm not good at not having a schedule though...
Just let me know what y'all decide and I'll write it up in my thingy...
Like, last year (two years ago?), when we did all the Shawn Inmon books on Mondays... those were fun... I'd love to try some of his other books, or catch up on what we've missed... the LitRPGs tend to be bigger and longer though, probably since they're often serialized and don't have much editing...
The LitRPGs are me scratching an itch I don't read often, but suddenly want to... they do tend to be indie authors and web serials, so the quality swings wide...
I missed out on the Shawn Inmon books... I assume they're the Time Travel Falls series... I was doing other stuff at the time, and not doing as many BRs and I'm now doing... reading has definitely upticked, as well...
In general, I'm trying to avoid recommending as many re-reads for me next year, even if they'd be new reads for other people... leave my schedule open more to more new to me series that other people might be setting up, like Rob's Empire of the Wolf trilogy and all Ann-Marie's stuff...

I think the last one we read was The Encore Lives of Effie Edenson and it's got three more books since then, and two more shorts... Seem to be coming out at about 2/year recently, spring and fall.

Been eyeballing that when I was looking for a 2nd too... ended up just not getting the first thing I was looking at, but maybe I'll go back and fix that...
I got Noobtown 6 & Mage Errant 1-2... but I could add Cat Core, easily...
Unrelated: If anyone else around here uses Audiobooks.com, hit me up sometime, if you need L33T H4X, to read faster than 2x speed... I know all the tricks to download the mp3s to a PC and transfer onto your device, so you can listen in faster apps...

I can read Cat Core with you, Narilka, and maybe any other stuff we all picked up on sale around here, but not until at least next month...

Yeah, no rush. You know I'm on the slow boat in audio land :)

Mini-Update: I hurt my wrists a while back (2 years ago) and regular actions made it worse over time until I went from strained to wrecked wrists. Screwing up ligaments is like getting a broken bone.
Learn from my mistakes! Treat your wrist strains with TLC & rest. So it will be like 2-3 weeks of taking time out vs 90 days. 🫠
I knew what was wrong with me but I kept rationalizing that I can juggle mostly normal (anything that uses hands like typing lots on PC, washing dishes, heavy laundry, cleaning, gaming, etc), but that made it worse cause a thoughtless move would re-injure the ligaments and I'd have a new 90 days of rest. 🫣
I out myself in time out and worked to change lots of habits. If all goes well, I should be able to start conditioning PT for my hands-wrists-arms in 2 weeks! 🤞

I saw a post mentioning BoC and (willingly) got sucked back into our thread. 😆😆😆
I am SUPER DISAPPOINTED in Kerei! 2nd book for Casual Farmer was a setup book. 3rd one should have been a priority vs a new one. I still got the vamp audio to try. 🤷♀️
Lots of series/etc I am.not caught up on. Got a bunch of books in the last 2-for-1 credit sale.
I set GR reading goal to 100 for 2023. Will try to knock that out before year ends.
I've been reading a ton of Light Novels. Mostly Chinese, a few Korean and Japanese. The translations aren't the best but it's been a nice storytelling style & trope mix change.
How are ya'll?

We all read Beware of Chicken 1 & 2 in this thread earlier this year :) We're planning #3 for this thread next month as the audio will be out and timing seemed right.
My reading has been all over the board as I deal with an aging parent's health issues, which just reared it's ugly head again yesterday. It means I've been doing lighter reads, can't do anything even remotely dark at all right now and for the foreseeable future. Murderbot, BOC, Starter Villain have all been perfect.

I'm not avoiding dark story elements, but I am definitely more into stories with gutsy MC's, a dash of goofy or intelligent humor and solid warm bonds of family/friends.
I have a mountain of audiobooks to chomp on. I'll try to post about the yay ones here.

That sucks... best wishes... heal up...
I remember when all the news updates were coming out about Ilona Andrews or Patricia Briggs hurting their fingers typing up their books, and having to completely stop for awhile and dictate to husband/etc and heal up... hand issues are serious... so many people these days need carpal tunnel surgery...
