Pirateaba has experimented with editors, out of pocket, the past year or 2, to see what (s)he is missing... I think they've incorporated what they've learned, but don't think they can afford to have an editor long-term... as much content as they churn out...
Not sure if you know who Pirateaba is, but it's the author of Wandering Inn...

You guys reading the early Trader's Tales books... do you remember a Sarah Krugg?
The Solar Clipper wiki is lacking... but it says she was a mess deck assistant on the Lois McKendrick in Half Share... also says she wasn't introduced until Double Share on a different page...
Either way, it's interesting, since that's actually the daughter of the Shaman that was born at the start of Cape Grace here in my book, which takes place earlier in the timeline...

She's pretty insistent about being a shaman in this book, but politics/bureaucracy and tradition are against it... her father seems to have instilled some fishing boat likings in her, recently... seems that might lead to starshipping, in the future...
After I posted, I looked at book blurbs, and she's mentioned directly in the Half Share blurb... that was like 10 months ago for me, tho...

Good luck figuring out the best reading order... I just read the first 6 Ishmael books, and knew I needed to read the side stuff, before continuing the Ishmael 7-12...
His publishing order is a mess:
2007: Shaman 1, Ishmael 1-2
2008: Ishmael 3-4
2013: Ishmael 5
2014: Ishmael 6
2015: Ishmael 7
2016: Smuggler 1
2017: Ishmael 8
2018: Smuggler 2-3, Ishmael 9
2020: Shaman 2-3
2023: Ishmael 10-12
Shaman 2 fills the entire time gap between Shaman 1 and Ishmael 2, I think...
And Shaman 3 overlaps events of Ishmael 3-4, showing what Sarah's dad does back home...
I'm happy with the order I chose...

I still want to read Orthodox Farming and Dungeon Crawler Carl from a few weeks ago first though... once I clear out this months official BRs.
Those release dates might just be super wrong, unless this started as a web serial... Amazon says the Ishmael stuff started in 2012, and the Shaman stuff started in 2014... skips over the big time gap caused by started in 2007... and those 2007 dates just say January 1st , 2007, for the first 2 Ishmael books and December 1st for Shaman, which kinda sound like placeholders...
Wikipedia says he self-published on podiobooks in 2007, before signing with a small traditional publisher... also seems to indicate the 2nd Ishmael trilogy published earlier than listed above, since he won awards for #5 Captain & #6 Owner's Shares in 2010/2011
Just got done updating my spreadsheet with all my BR plans for the rest of the year, so far...
October is another busy month, mostly because of Spooktober... 7 tentative spooky reads puts me at 35 BRs for the month...
November drops to 26, with Cycle of Scour & Spooktober over... altho the GR Awards should fix that...
And then, EVERYTHING starts ending, and I only have 12 for December... and that's WITH some new stuff starting up...
Dark Hunterverse ends after 39 books around Thanksgiving, and In Death ends after 57 books early December... that's 8-10 books off the monthly docket... then Murderbot is over, Cytoverse is over, Greatcoats is over, Codex Alera is over...
With Highland Magic, Laundry Files/New Management, and In Death ending in December, that clears the slate for a short breather before 2024 ramps up with a ton of new stuff in January... only things I have down for starting in December right now are Vorkosigan Saga and Empire of the Wolf, on my person BR pile... Eli Monpress starts in November, and a few series like October Daye and Alex Verus continue until next summer...

I'm not committing to anything in Spooktober, just gonna see what I feel like reading and if its readily available, preferably at the library

On the plus side, maybe I'll catch up on those Vagabond LitRPGs...

Decision fatigue is real... it's why the President wears the same thing each day... save energy for the decisions that matter...
When you read as much as we do, you need 30-45 books on tap each month... that's alot of decisions... and probably why I like long series and re-reads so much... I read 25-30 different series each month, with my current setup, and fill gaps with my Audible unread pile and strategic re-reads when I want something easy...
I'm hoping the GR Awards will tide me over to New Year... it's kinda one of my best sources for standalones, these days, so I can start new stuff in January...
I think we'll have plenty to fill the time in January, between Choko's Stephanie Plum plans, my Animorph plans, and the already scheduled Discworld stuff for fast 2-4 a month BRs, and then options for monthly BRs to choose from...

I still want to get to those 2-3 White Trash Warlock books I found on Audible Plus LAST December

I re-read the first this month and definitely want to read 2 & 3.

There are a few series that are slightly indecent I have been itching to re-read. Disclaimer - I enjoyed these the first time but they are M/M romance as well as various levels of fantasy.
Jordan L. Hawk Whyborne & Griffin (I hated the narrator though so this would be the toughest for me)
Jordan Castillo Price Psycop (the dirtiest out of the 3 iirc but OMG I <3 Vic so much! Narrator is really good as well)
And there is always the Green Creek series by T.J. Klune. I can't believe I haven't done a full re-read this year! I have listened to parts here & there for my "Go To Sleep" listening. This is probably the least indecent series too. Now if you wanted to consider his Verania series that is a whole different thing lol

That's number 9, right?... from what I understand, 9+10 essentially make up a single book, so 9 isn't going to be as satisfying as 1-8... it's more like reading the early sections of a Malazan book, that set up the big payoffs at the end of a Malazan book only that end takes place in the next book...
Finale is epic and bonkers, tho, from what I understand...

@Iain--I appreciate your comparing our decisions to the President's. Makes me feel very important.

I make the best comparisons :D
I just draw on things I recently learned, generally...

Choko's been a bit quiet lately (past week/month), with a few mentions of arthritis pain flare ups... hope she's doing better / improving / OK...

Looking at Nirkatze's reading stats for the past 4 months, I've created a monster, in learning my listening speed tactics...
From comments, I think she's also better at listening while typing/commenting on GR threads...
I mostly ride on consistency and occasional lulls/drops... instead, Nirkatze has sped up 50% since June...
I'll probably be 2nd place solo, by Halloween, unless all the Spooktober BRs help me eke out 1st place with a strong month...
I have 40 BRs for October, with a few old ones from September/August/July and a bunch of Spooktober ones...

So, I've been doing some research on out-of-state library card memberships, and I think I'm going to take the plunge.
I used these two sites:
9th Street: https://www.9thstreetbooks.com/how-to...
Book Riot: https://bookriot.com/out-of-state-lib...
I only looked at libraries that had both hoopla and overdrive/libby available, and I searched for several authors/series that have upcoming BRs this year. I actually made a spreadsheet:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...
I was pretty much only looking for audiobooks though, so my search priorities were skewed that way.
In the end, it came down to two top dogs: New Orleans and Westchester. New Orleans seems to have the bigger SFF collection, but Westchester will occasionally have things that New Orleans doesn't. New Orleans also seems to have more copies and lower wait times. I was also really impressed with the easily understandable search engines each had--it's easy to see what digital platforms have the items are available, if they are available now, how many copies exist, and how long the hold list is.
Search Pages:
New Orleans: https://neworleans.polarislibrary.com...
Westchester: https://opac.westchesterlibraries.org...
Westchester was the best for finding information on their site--in order to find how to apply for library membership for New Orleans, I had to google it separately. However, New Orleans apparently will allow on-line application (and is $50/year)--just email their staff for instructions--while Westchester requires a mailed-in application and fee (of $75)
Library membership information:
New Orleans: https://nolalibrary.org/new-to-the-li...
Westchester: https://www.westchesterlibraries.org/...
So, I emailed New Orleans and am waiting to see what their response is! Wish me luck!

I think any speed ups I've gotten is purely due to my insane lack of sleep... I'm only getting about 3 hours a night, work nights... and audiobooks help keep me sane while I'm working... and my audio speed has gone from 1.7-2.5/3.5 in the past year... I still bow to your Jedi-Masterness, Iain-sama, I am still but a padawan...

I don't know how you function on 3hrs sleep... I get about 6-6.5 on work nights, and feel drowsy in the afternoons before gaining a 2nd wind... 6 is probably more accurate, with how often I wake in the night...

She has been a bit MIA. Hope she's getting better as well <3

That sounds intense! I hope you remember to take care of yourself! <3

Nirgatze, I couldn't live like that. Any less than a full 8 hours and I'm not very functional lol
Hope you're doing OK where ever you are Choko!
GR's not marking posts as read is messing me up a little.
Been a mod here for a year now... time flies so fast... been a mod in a 2nd group for 9-10 months now... I just track new releases and schedule Monthly Urban Fantasy / etc New Release Buddy Reads over there...
2x low effort mod jobs :D
Both groups were because a single active mod was buckling under the burden of maintaining everything... I wasn't sure about modding the non-FBR group, since I'd been more of a lurker the past few years... but since the New Release Tracker thread was the one time a year I tended to pop in and comment a bunch, it made sense...

And I just took the plunge! The New Orleans library folks got back to me today and I filled out registration form. Next they'll complete the process, and I assume, send me a card/card number and the bill. Yay! They have most of the Spooktober choices, so my options just increased tenfold.
If I have a hidden talent, it's waking up at 2:34 am... my work alarms go off at 2:45 and 3am on work days... but I only have alarms to get me to stop rolling over and going back to sleep, because I wake up through the night so much anyway... feels like mostly at the exact same times each night, too... I'm on vacation here, and here I am up at 3-4am...

Awesome! Keep us updated :)

I did it! I paid the fee and am now a (digital) card-toting member of the New Orleans library. The service folks were really responsive and the sign-up process was easy--probably would have been faster if I'd been able to respond to email during work hours. I've already checked out one book on Libby and one on Hoopla. I have 20 Hoopla borrows (up from 4!!!) and 10 Libby borrows (up from 7!) and a much much bigger catalogue than my home library!
The $50 fee will already pay for itself before the end of October--most of the books I would have had to buy are available in their system...
