Vagabond Treehouse (2023) [Beware of Chicken 3 - December 4th]

The internet says the early Discworld books have some Hitchhiker vibes, but Pratchett settles into his own style after 3-4..."
I believe I have the first few in the series so I'll likely give them a try :)

Book 1-2 is structured as a D&D campaign, being played by the gods, and the main characters are their PCs... in that context, the sequence of short stories nature of the plot makes a fair bit of sense... (I've only read the first book before)

Ooo that's a cool little quiz. I got Going Postal for a suggested start.

I don't really do quizzes... my school years are over ;)
Been riding the Codex Alera hangover for days...
Read South Coast, and enjoyed it as a quintessential Nathan Lowell cozy/competent book, but really questioned the veracity of the storyline... it was about a kid discovering what being a real shaman meant, and fishermen finding a way to meet unreasonable quotas on a fishing planet... lots of fishing ingenuity...
Then I read Yule Be Sorry... these characters are so ridiculous, and I love it... bunch of old ladies, and their dragon friends getting into detective hijinks... thinking, because they've read/watched Ms. Marple, Hercule Poirot, and Midsomer Murders, they know what it takes to solve crimes... and the real policemen that have the unfortunate "privilege" to know dragons exist, and keep the secret.... looking forward to the 3rd one, when I have time... hopefully I can get 4-6 on sale, the next time Audible has a sitewide sale...

I kind of want to jump in on Codex Alera late because I remember loving that series... But I've just got too many things!

Also its read AND listen for free!

My 3 day weekend is starting, and I'm ready to chain some BRs again...
In Death, Dark Hunter, Tarot Sequence, Laundry Files, probably a Mystery Book Club book, Yumi & the Nightmare Painter, Cycle of Galand... doubt that leaves any time to continue with Midnight Tides... I read Part 1 a week or 2 ago...
EDIT: Forgot Quantum Curators...

I reached the tail end of the month... the breather section... I have a half dozen Buddy Reads left, but they're mostly In Death & Dark Hunter stuff... clean out the rest I'm behind on, squeeze some personal reads in, and prepare for another new month of zaniness...

First time read?... nice... it was a binge re-read for me (not sure if you saw... was mentioned in the Hanged Man thread... did it in 24hrs)

Maybe I had seen a mention of it in my recent updates feed or something idk 🤷♀️
But i was a fan. Recommeded it to one of my friends who likes more romance than SFF. Still plenty of plot but definitely had the romance!
It's that time of the month, again... when I can try and make some progress on Malazan... with The Thousand Deaths of Ardor Benn done, I have 3 days to finish Midnight Tides and start Bonehunters, before things heat up again...
I'm reading Midnight Tides, and recently learned of the Letheri sword, Glory Goat...
But it seems to have nothing to do with the short story Goats of Glory from an anthology... did Erikson just find those 2 words funny and use them in multiple ideas?...

Iain, are you guys baking like we are here? Last night the temperature didn't fall below 90... In the 100s for days... We just had a major storm, so it got down to 85, finally! But I have been reading all my e-books in the last several days, because I am not going out in this heat... I am reading a Malazan too:)))

There was a storm the other day, and the temp dropped into the 70s for an hour, then shot up to 95... we've been in a heat warning/advisory for the weekend... was 100 yesterday, with a heat index of 112...
Should be dropping a bit throughout the week... it was hot all night last night, but back down to 60s at night for of the rest of the week, with daytime temps of 82-90 (not sure about heat index... my car bakes while I'm at work, tho)...
I've had my landlord/maintenance out twice this month for a leak in the A/C drain pipe (pipe is shared between me and neighbor)...
I'm ready for Autumn... they say next year will be worse, since we just entered an El Nino heat uptick, which lasts a few years, I think... and climate change "isn't real"

Yeah, that super volcano that went off under the ocean is doing a doozy. The articles I read said to expect this for few more years:

Back in Seattle today and it was marvelous. 75 degrees with clouds

Seattle or Vancouver sounds more my perfect weather... I don't need the rain so much as the 60F temps...

I think people get used to their environment, to a certain extent... I definitely know people from the tropics who would come to america and wear sweaters in 80-90 degree weather...
I don't think Yanique has posted the BR list for the month yet, but I went ahead and used the spreadsheet to update my spreadsheet, and it looks like I have 29 BRs this month, plus a couple stragglers from last month and even further back, for 33-35 total... normal month, basically...
Half are the weeklies... 4 In Death novels + 1 short story + 1 carryover from yesterday... 5 Dark Hunter... 3 Cycle of Galand... that's 14 BRs right there...

Don't know how you keep up!!!! LOL. I am swimming in Malazan so feel so disconnected on BRs this year. Reading Return of the Crimson Guard and loving it.

I saw you added in the Esslemont books... I thought the plan was to focus on Erikson... that's still my plan for now... with Midnight Tides done, I'm on to Bonehunters next...

Also, Iain I thought you sent me the order of books and it included all of them? If that is the case i will power through this and get back on the main series.

I honestly can't remember... I was definitely focused on Malazan Book of the Fallen, for now... people say the Esslemont books aren't as good, and take some getting used to... I saw the first one is short, and a bit of a murder mystery, i think?
There's also the Beauchelain & Korbal Broach novellas, Goats of Glory, and then once you finish the main Erikson & Esslemont series, there's the prequels and sequels...
Path of Ascendancy, Kharkanas, and Witness...
10 books vs 25-30 books, basically...

Brian, yes, Essemoth's are not as good, but if you remove that comparison, they are actually pretty great. Ericson is just a notch above when it comes to prose.

I agree. This is my second Esselmont book in the Malayan world and both have been good. Introduced some great characters that play a part in Eriksons books and give a deeper dive into the Crimson Guard which I really enjoyed
Audible is having another sale... this one is themed around some specific authors like Dean Koontz, and then some random additional books...
I picked up 3 Malazan books & 2 Joseph Bridgeman books (time travel series)...
The Malazan books are Night of Knives (start of Esslemont's main Malazan series), 3rd Kellanved prequel, and start of the Witness trilogy by Erikson... one of those is on the generic August sale, but listed in the author sale as well...
Joseph Bridgeman, the first 2 books are on Audible Plus, and I read them a few years ago... the 3rd is on the August sale, and the 4th is on the author sale, so I picked them up to have the whole series to date... it has an interesting mythos that's slowly being parcelled out...

It's also one of the only series where publication order isn't nearly as important as sub-series order. Iain's post over on the planning thread is dead on - if you end up liking one sub-series over another, you can just join for those and ignore the rest.
