Michelle (marcher08) | 1705 comments These two nonfiction books were a great anitdote for my recent foray into the literary psychic realms.

#87 Bitcoin Billionaires A True Story of Genius, Betrayal, and Redemption by Ben Mezrich Bitcoin Billionaires: A True Story of Genius, Betrayal, and Redemption This book describes the rise of bitcoin and some the the major players in that market. Fascinating. I'm still not sure I understand bitcoin but it was one hell of a story. Audiobook. 4 stars. Nonfiction.

#88 Fly Girl A Memoir by Ann Hood Fly Girl: A Memoir Author Ann Hood recalls her days as a flight attendant in the 70's and 80's. Some great stories in this one. Audiobook. 4 stars. Nonfiction-Memoir.

88 books/9938 pages

Shoeless Joe ebook.
This is How You Lose the Time War audiobook.
Cloud Cuckoo Land hardback.

Hoping to get some good reading time in over the long weekend.

Michelle (marcher08) | 1705 comments Time for another round of catch up.

#89 This is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar This is How You Lose the Time War Mixed feelings about this one. The writing was pretty but the world building sucked. Since I'm more of a scifi/fantasy girl than a poetry girl the last one was hard to get over. How exactly did time travel work? and What exactly were they doing? and How exactly did they beat the system? Oh well, I hated Romeo and Juliet too and I think that this was in the same mindset. I think so anyway I'm not sure. I'm giving it 3 stars because by the end I really didn't care I just said "Hmmm. Pretty." Audiobook. Fantasy-Time Travel(I think?)

#90 Shoeless Joe by W.P. Kinsella Shoeless Joe I loved this one! Just a really good tale about family and faith and magic and baseball. Very well written. This one really made me smile and we all need that. 5 take me out to the ballgame stars. ebook. Contemporary Literature/Magical Realism.

#91 Upgrade by Blake Crouch Upgrade I have seen other goodreads reviews that seemed to indicate Blake Crouch phoned it in for this one. Personally I thought this was his best since Dark Matter. I welcomed the change of topic from time travel to DNA/endtimes. I do think his endings in general seem to drag out too long. Once we know where its going, there is no pleasure in long repetitive action sequences. Just my opinion. Audiobook. 4 new premise stars. SciFi.

#92 Breaking and Entering The Extraordinary Story of a Hacker Called "Alien" by Jeremy N. Smith Breaking and Entering: The Extraordinary Story of a Hacker Called "Alien" This nonfiction narrative follows a young female hacker from her earliest days at MIT to her establishment as an entrepreneur in the computer securities industry. A really original view of the hacker life. Fans of nonfiction I think you would enjoy this one. ebook. 4 white hat stars. Nonfiction-Biography.

93 Women Rowing North Navigating Life’s Currents and Flourishing As We Age by Mary Pipher Women Rowing North: Navigating Life’s Currents and Flourishing As We Age Sage and comforting advice for women facing their latter years. This book was sort of like a Bob Ross painting except in the form of an advice book. Put some happy little trees over here. It's all going to be all right. ebook. 3 calm yoga breath stars. Nonfiction-Self Help.

93 books/10804 pages

Current:
Fairy Tale Audiobook. Stephen King need I say more.
New and Selected Poems, Volume One ebook. Taking small bites of this one. Nibbles really.

Cloud Cuckoo Land Hardback. I am currently completly ignoring this one. La-la-la-la-la.

I think I'm fairly alone in disliking this book. I love time travel and this looked like it was right up my alley but nope. I hadn't thought of it in the same context as Romeo and Juliet but maybe that was it. And I hated Romeo and Juliet as well. You were much kinder in the ratings than I was.

You're not alone. It wasn't good time travel or good romance as far as I'm concerned. I tried to be kind because the writing was pretty and the idea was good if it had been executed better. So many writers from different genres are now incorporating Fantasy/SciFi/Magic Realism into their stories. Sometimes this is delightful and sometimes it is disaster. I think in most of the disaster cases they overlook one vital element of fantasy. That is world building. To be a complete story the reader has to understand the rules/background/topography/whatever of this setting you have created. Otherwise we can't get invested in the story. Why do they think that every classic fantasy novel has a map at the beginning? You've got to provide some context.

Michelle (marcher08) | 1705 comments Also I really do hate Romeo and Juliet. Hated it in high school and hate now. So the whole dying for love thing rarely does it for me. Stupid.

Michelle (marcher08) | 1705 comments #94 Fairy Tale by Stephen King Fairy Tale For Stephen King I would call this story whimsical. Don't get me wrong there was plenty of grit and gore but overall it was a lot of fun. The fairytale portion of the book is derivative but that is not only acknowledged it is part of the premise. While I enjoyed the entire book, I have to admit that I enjoyed the non fairytale first part of the book a little more. When he wants to King can write characters that seem so real you could touch them and that is what he did here. I listened to the audiobook and not only was the reader great but King performs a small cameo portion of the book himself. A nice little bonus. Audiobook. 4 stars. Fantasy/Good King.

#95 The Magic of Lemon Drop Pie by Rachel Linden The Magic of Lemon Drop Pie I thouroughly enjoyed this one. Magical realism, a sweet little romance, and a woman searching for her true self combine to make a great story with shades of "It's a Wonderful Life". Audiobook. 4 stars. Contemporary Lit/Romance/Magical Realism.

#96 Geisha, a Life by Mineko Iwasaki Geisha, a Life The memoir of a woman who was raised and later worked as a Geisha. This memoir was very favorable to the Geisha way of life but it was an interesting companion read to Memoirs of a Geisha which I read earlier this year. Audiobook. 4 stars. Nonfiction-Memoir.

Michelle (marcher08) | 1705 comments #97 Ellie Dwyer's Great Escape by Diane Winger Ellie Dwyer's Great Escape A senior woman takes to the open road in a camper after her husband abandons her. This was for my RL book club. An improvement over last month's selection. Audiobook. 3 stars. Contemporary Fiction.

#98 The Alzheimer's Solution A Breakthrough Program to Prevent and Reverse the Symptoms of Cognitive Decline at Every Age by Dean Sherzai The Alzheimer's Solution: A Breakthrough Program to Prevent and Reverse the Symptoms of Cognitive Decline at Every Age A lot of good information and real ideas about non-pharma ways to fight dementia. At the same time the lifestyle if you followed all the "rules" would seem somewhat bleak. Very thorough in the areas that were covered. ebook. 4 stars. Nonfiction-Health.

#99 Thank You for Listening by Julia Whelan Thank You for Listening I needed something funny and peppy after the above. This fit the bill nicely. I don't think I have ever seen a romance author cram as many romance tropes into one novel as Julia Whelan managed to do in this one. Fortunately, with the playful banter, sweet family side story and endless hot innuendo, this story really works. Also the author happens to be a popular audiobook reader and since the story centers around an audiobook narrator it made for a great audio production. Audiobook. 4 stars. Romantic Comedy.

Michelle (marcher08) | 1705 comments Last night my husband and I watched Mr. Harrigan's Phone on Netflix. This was an adaptation of Stephen King's short story by the same name. I love King's short stories and I think this is one of his better ones. They did a great job converting it to the screen. It was very true to the original story. Donald Sutherland was great as Mr. Harrigan. It looked like Stephen King was involved in the production so that is probably why it turned out so well. Anyway I would encourage all of you King fans who have access to Netflix to watch it. A great creepy movie for October. Movie. 5 stars. Great King.

Looks like I need to add this on to my audiobook list. I’m always looking for lighter stories to fit in between heavier reading

message 169: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (marcher08) | 1705 comments If you like a romance now and then to lighten things up, this would probably be perfect for you. Just be prepared to suspend disbelief now and then. I find I have to do that as much with the romance genre as I do with fantasy.

message 170: by Lillie (new)

Lillie | 1686 comments I do enjoy light romances every so often. Hear you on suspension of belief for the genre. I find I do that to an extent with sci-fi & cozy murder mysteries as well. Historical fiction and contemporary fiction are where I have a harder time with my expectation that they’ll be realistic. The other genres get a slight pass from me.

Michelle (marcher08) | 1705 comments #100 A Lady's Guide to Fortune-Hunting by Sophie Irwin A Lady's Guide to Fortune-Hunting A fun little regency romance. The MC has to marry rich in order to save her four sisters from a life of poverty and only one man stands in her way. Light, predictable but with lots of witty banter. Audiobook. 4 stars. Romance.

#101 The Golden Enclaves (The Scholomance, #3) by Naomi Novik The Golden Enclaves I thought this was a good ending to a series that I have enjoyed. I'm not sure the magic held up or maybe I just didn't follow it well but I thought the author finished up all the loose story lines nicely. Audiobook. 4 stars. Fantasy.

#102 Things Fall Apart (The African Trilogy, #1) by Chinua Achebe Things Fall Apart A tale of colonialism and one man's struggles with changing times by Nigerian author Chinua Achebe. ebook. 4 stars. Historical Fiction.

#103 Personal Memoirs of U.S. Grant All Volumes by Ulysses S. Grant Personal Memoirs of U.S. Grant: All Volumes Volumes 1 & 2 only because these were the ones available on audiobook from my library. Well written and detailed these first two volumes cover the period from Grant's boyhood until he as appointed Lieutenant General over the Union forces during the Civil War (the War of Succession as Grant consistently refers to it). Much of the military portions dealt with battles that took place in the area that I live in so that added interest for me. I do have to apologize to President Obama, however. I was highly critical of the length of his memoir. Little did I know that Mr. Grant had published six volumes which basically include an entire Civil War reenactment. Keep writing Mr. Obama you are cleared to go. Audiobook. 4 stars. Nonfiction-Memoirs.

Michelle (marcher08) | 1705 comments #104 Six Wakes by Mur Lafferty Six Wakes Basically this is is a classic closed-door mystery aboard a spaceship. Oh, and every single character is a clone. I enjoyed this one a lot. Good characters, intriguing premise, and a solid mystery. 4 stars. Audiobook. SciFi/Mystery.

#105 Other Birds by Sarah Addison Allen Other Birds I am a big fan of Sarah Addison Allen. She has a knack for combining interesting characters with magical realism that always works for me. Without getting into the plot, this book was about finding your own place and family in the world and letting go of the ghosts (literally) of the past that hold you back. It was a nice story with just enough of a ghost story on the side to make it a great October read. No hard stuff here. Not spooky at all. Just good reading. 4 stars. ebook. Contemporary Fiction/Magical Realism.

#106 The Ink Black Heart (Cormoran Strike, #6) by Robert Galbraith The Ink Black Heart The latest in the Cormoran Strike series by Robert Galbraith AKA J.K. Rowling. In spite of critics, I do like this series, and this was a good one. While still denying their feelings for each other, Robin and Strike solve a murder mystery by infiltrating an online game. I have always enjoyed the narrator for the audiobooks in this series. He is excellent. However, due to the nature of the story, there were a lot of emails, texts, tweets, online conversations, etc. to read and those parts of the audiobook were a little tiresome. This one might be better read in print. 4 stars. Audiobook. Mystery.

Obviously since I have been reading Cloud Cuckoo for months now, I would have to say I can't get into it either. I am determined to finish it but it's slow going. There are about 5000 main characters and multiple time lines and a weird myth like story that is supposed to tie everything together???? The writing is solid but there is too much going on. Everytime I get into one of the stories it switches to another story. I can only do that so many times before I give up. Right now I am mainly reading it on weekends when I have longer periods of time to concentrate on it. Unfortunately, that is not every weekend so I will probably wind this one up sometime in 2023. It makes me sad because I enjoyed All the Light We Cannot See so much.

Glad I'm not alone. It's such a pity because the narrator for this series is excellent. I like him almost as much as Jim Dale (narrator of the Harry Potter series). I always try to listen to these rather than read the print. Maybe I'll have to review the book a little more next time. The mystery itself was excellent it just takes a long time to unfold.

#108 The Lost Ticket by Freya Sampson The Lost Ticket A chance encounter on the bus leads to unexpected change and new relationships. A sweet story. Less of a romance than a book about friendship. 3 stars. Audiobook. Contemporary Fiction.

#109 The Last Picture Show by Larry McMurtry The Last Picture Show Larry McMurtry's gift for characterization and solid writing were all that saved this book from being a shallow book about horny teenagers. Somehow, McMurty manages to portray very expertly a small slice of small town America. That is the saving grace of this book and the only thing that I could see that would legitimately raise it to the rank of contemporary classic. 3 stars. ebook. Contemporary Classic/Teenage Disaster

Some people read a book for the cover. I'm more of a title person. In this case it makes it sound a little boring though and it is the opposite. An orphan, a school of magic, a revolution, an outcry against colonialism and racism. Lots of action and social justice.

Michelle (marcher08) | 1705 comments #110 Babel, Or the Necessity of Violence An Arcane History of the Oxford Translators’ Revolution by R.F. Kuang Babel, Or the Necessity of Violence: An Arcane History of the Oxford Translators’ Revolution A great fantasy with orphans, a school of magic and secret societies but with a serious side of anti-racism and anti-colonialism. I did not expect this one to be as good as it was. I would recommend this one for anyone looking for a good old school fantasy story. 4 stars. Audiobook. Fantasy.

#111 Of Boys and Men Why the Modern Male Is Struggling, Why It Matters, and What to Do about It by Richard V. Reeves Of Boys and Men: Why the Modern Male Is Struggling, Why It Matters, and What to Do about It A good discourse on the challenges faced by men and boys in our current culture. I felt too much of the book was dedicated to making the author's case about the state of things and too little to offering solutions. The solutions offered mostly involved major policy and societal change rather than individual solutions so I'm not sure they are very helpful. 3 stars. Audiobook. Nonfiction.

#112 Freakonomics A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything by Steven D. Levitt Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything This book was a little dated and I thought that many of the topics discussed were oversimplified but on the whole the book was a delight. If you want an entertaining book that "thinks outside the box" pick it up. I may check out the podcast next. 4 stars. Audiobook. Nonfiction-Economics.

#113 Go Tell It on the Mountain by James Baldwin Go Tell It on the Mountain A heartbreaking coming of age story, beautifully written. A young boy struggles with his future and the secret pasts of those around him as he tries to determine the man he will become. 4.5 stars. Audiobook. Fiction/Classic.

Michelle (marcher08) | 1705 comments I finished it! I finished it! I don't usually post just one completed book but I feel like this is such an accomplishment. I somehow made reading this book a second job and I'm soooo glad its done.

#114 Cloud Cuckoo Land by Anthony Doerr Cloud Cuckoo Land I really loved All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr. Obviously, I did not enjoy this follow up book as much. I also did not hate it. While I was reading the book I enjoyed the stories but when I put it down I had no desire to pick it up again. My problem was that it had way too many main characters and their stories were too disjointed. There seemed to be no connection between stories. Having read Doerr before I knew that he was going to bring it all together in the end but it took way too long. By the end it becomes obvious that the whole book is a tribute to books and the timelessness of story. The last 250 pages or so things start to come together, and they were actually great. It was just long, long, long and I never got to spend enough time with any one character to actually care. I'm giving it 3 stars because the writing is good and the book as a whole is not bad. IMO this could have used better editing. Cut it down to 2 or 3 main characters and shave off about 200 pages and you might have something. My recommendation for this one is that if you feel you have to read it get the audiobook. I don't know if the audio version is any good, but it will take up less of your life. 3 stars. Hardback. Fiction.

Probably a good call.

Michelle (marcher08) | 1705 comments #115 Love on the Brain by Ali Hazelwood Love on the Brain Funny and entertaining romance but very predictable and happy. It had a surprising (given the lightness of the rest of the book) dark turn at the end but the story quickly self-corrected and returned to its predicted happily-ever-after track. 4 stars because light and predictable were what I needed. Audiobook. Rom-Com.

#116 When Two Feathers Fell from the Sky by Margaret Verble When Two Feathers Fell from the Sky The story follows a young native american woman who happens to be a horse diver during the time just after WWI. I can't really say too much about the plot without spoiling the book but this was a great read. Interesting characters and a fascinating bit of history. 4 stars. Audiobook. Historical Fiction.

#117 Little Souls by Sandra Dallas Little Souls Two sisters depend on each other to overcome the hardships they face during WWI and the Spanish flu epidemic. I always enjoy Sandra Dallas. Her understated approach to historical fiction always makes her characters seem more realistic. 4 stars. Audiobook. Historical Fiction.

#118 Crazy Faith It's Only Crazy Until It Happens by Michael Todd Crazy Faith: It's Only Crazy Until It Happens A good discussion of the practice of faith from a Christian perspective. 4 stars. Audiobook. Nonfiction-Christian.

#119 The Deal of a Lifetime by Fredrik Backman The Deal of a Lifetime Short story about a man who makes a deal with death. 3 stars. Audiobook. Contemporary Fiction.

Michelle (marcher08) | 1705 comments #120 Tripwire (Jack Reacher, #3) by Lee Child Tripwire Book #3 of the Jack Reacher series. Reacher's past becomes the center of this mystery/thriller. This may have been my favorite so far. I'm such a Reacher fan now. 4 stars. Paperback. Mystery/Thriller.

#121 Tell Me an Ending by Jo Harkin Tell Me an Ending A futuristic novel in which we assume it is possible to erase memories. What would happen if the people in charge of that were less than ethical? Great concept but it bogged down a bit in the psyches of the various characters. 3 stars. Audiobook. Fantasy.

#122 Clark and Division by Naomi Hirahara Clark and Division Loved this one. A young Japanese American girl tries to solve the mystery of her sister's death after her family is relocated during WWII. This book is a good mystery, but it really shines as historical fiction. The time period and the subject matter were fascinating. 4 stars. Audiobook. Historical Fiction/Mystery.

#123 Frost Burned (Mercy Thompson, #7) by Patricia Briggs Frost Burned #7 in the Mercy Thompson series did not disappoint. Mercy is one bad shape shifter. The story begins just after Thanksgiving so this made a fun and seasonal listen for me as I decorated the Christmas tree. 4 stars. Audiobook. Paranormal Fiction.

Lillie | 1686 comments I liked Clark and Division too. Enjoyed both the mystery and the time period.

Really need to get back to the Mercy Thompson series. It’s been a while since I read them, thinking I got to number 3. May have to start from the beginning though.

Clark and Division was really nice. Just a perfect combination of mystery and history. The Mercy Thompson series is just book candy but sometimes that's what you need right?

Good to know. That is the next book in the series for me. Maybe, I will make progress. Who knows??

Michelle (marcher08) | 1705 comments #124 The Codebreaker's Secret by Sara Ackerman The Codebreaker's Secret This is a nice historical fiction centered around a young woman's adventures as a codebreaker during WWII. The story flips back and forth between two timelines to solve a mystery. 3 stars. Audiobook. Historical Fiction.

#125 The Code Breaker Jennifer Doudna, Gene Editing, and the Future of the Human Race by Walter Isaacson The Code Breaker: Jennifer Doudna, Gene Editing, and the Future of the Human Race Weird I should choose these back to back but this was a completely different kind of code breaking. This follows the recent advances in the field of gene mapping. It also included a lot of gossipy tidbits about the major players in recent scientific advances made in the field. I enjoyed (though I can't say I completely understood) the science portions of the book. This is a great read for someone trying to get a basic scientific understanding of recent events. The personal portions of the book were very he said/she said and I found that part a little tiring. Overall good though. 4 stars. Audiobook. Nonfiction-Biography.

#126 We Met in December by Rosie Curtis We Met in December A perfectly light, perfectly enjoyable, perfectly forgettable romance/comedy of errors. Lots of holiday atmosphere so perfectly timed reading also. 3 stars. Audiobook. Rom-Com.

#127 Two Truths and a Lie A Murder, a Private Investigator, and Her Search for Justice by Ellen McGarrahan Two Truths and a Lie: A Murder, a Private Investigator, and Her Search for Justice This true crime book was OK, not uninteresting. It just seemed to be a lot of rehashing of a case that had already been sufficiently rehashed. It didn't seem to come to any definitive conclusions or bring up anything new.
3 stars. Audiobook. Nonfiction-True Crime.

#128 Blacktop Wasteland by S.A. Cosby Blacktop Wasteland Loved this one. I can't believe I waited so long to read it. The story of a man trying to escape his past. Loved the author's descriptive style. One of my favorite quotes: “When he stepped off the porch, he could feel the sun beating down on him like he owed it money.” I might use that sometime. 4 stars. Audiobook. Contemporary Fiction/Thriller

Ioana | 2122 comments You're doing great, reading lots of interesting books. The Jennifer Doudna and Blacktop Wasteland are both on my TBR, and I'm glad to hear they are both good.
Looks like you put a serious dent in that pile of books 😉

Both of those are great books Ioana. You're going to enjoy them. Sadly, it didn't reduce the pile of books at all. All of the above were audiobooks that I check out from the library. I have so little time to actually hold a book in my hands and read it these days.
