What Have You Read - 2022
I finished up The Ghost that Ate Us
and I thought it was excellent! The book is like a mockumentary of a poltergeist at Burger City, a burger franchise. It tells the story of the "haunting" via interviews with all of the people involved, and it includes photos of many of the interviewees, the restaurant, etc.
I thought the entire novel was a ton of fun. Was it really a poltergeist? Was it meth, was it mass hysteria? Why did so many have to die? (And dying isn't the worst thing, by far.)
I absolutely loved it!
I do not think, however, that it would work as well as an ebook as it did in paperback. A lot of times ebooks mess up footnotes, or if you click them you lose your place in the book. Plus, I'm not sure how well the photos would transfer or if they are even included in the ebook.

I read the ARC ebook. The photos were fine. But it was a terribly formatted ARC so the footnotes and such were a mess. I was not overly impressed with story. The gimmick really wore on me in the latter chapters.

I saw when I read your review last night. I can see where you're coming from, sure, but I loved every minute of it. (view spoiler)
I was guessing the whole time.
I just finished the first of our author group reads Ashley's Tale by Mike Duke.Even though it had what seemed to be a brutal start, it turned into something completely different by the end. 4*
I'll be on to the next one, for sure.
Just finished The Venue.
Since it's June and the month for weddings, this might be a book for you... that is, if you want to read about a seriously twisted celebration.

I love The Shadow over Innsmouth. Its one of the definitive Lovecraft stories. There are so many of his stories that are so creepy and truely scary.
Have you ever read any Edward Lee novels? There are a couple of his books that he writes as Lovecraft, expanding on several of his more classic stories such as;
The Innswitch Horror and The Dunwich Horror
Also Ed Lee had written a book or two that are somewhat sequels to Lovecraft stories such as, "The Haunter of the Threshold" which is one of my favorites. Its very hard edged though, like most of Lee's works. Highly recommend it and most of his other books. Ican make more recommendations.

There’s something about The Shadow Over Innsmouth that made it inbed itself into my brain! The scene in the hotel room is unforgettable, among others!
I’ve not read Edward Lee but I’ll check him out. Thanks for the suggestion!

It was FAB! It's a fantasy, though, not horror, but still very good and quite funny at times. The Lesser Dead though, will most likely always be my favorite from him.
Char wrote: "So noted, sir!"It has ruined the Aquatic Horror Summer Reading Challenge for me...first book I read for the Challenge, and I have a feeling it will be 'Nothing Compares 2 U' time for the rest of Aquatic Horror.
I had the best reading week recently, that I can remember in ages - unwittingly blitzed myself with three 5-star reads!
and
and especially
!
Recently finished the short story collection Blood Mountain by Brenda S. Tolian
My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
In short - loved this collection! 5 stars all the way!
Storm Shadows by Kenneth W. Cain
This is categorized as a YA/Teen but can also be enjoyed by those of us who are - ahem - somewhat older. Thoroughly enjoyed it
I finished listening to Ninth House.Meh.
I also finished the latest from Gabino Iglesias:
and it was amazing. I love his writing.
I finally finished
The Last Séance: Tales of the Supernatural. There are a few worthwhile stories here but too many actually have nothing to do with the supernatural, leaving the whole collection feeling like just a cash grab. There is one startlingly good tale here, though: “The Dressmaker’s Doll,” which, while not “scary,” is definitely supernatural and almost makes the collection worthwhile. It belongs on any list of all-time great supernatural doll stories.

I agree that "The Dressmaker's Doll" was a standout. I'd never come across it before and given Christie's fame I'm really surprised it hasn't been anthologized more often.
For myself, just started The Final Girl Support Group which I've been looking forward to.

The Last Storm by Tim Lebbon
Absolutely mad-fab book. Lebbon's best book to date. Link to my review - don't read the spoiler at the end unless you've read the book.

An oldie, but a goodie. Part of the film was shot in my hometown of Springfield, MA.
