Mini

3. Read a book with a character who is very rich The four "boys" and Uncle Lucian Zacarias are obviously wealthy with a mansion, a private plane, a penthouse in New York and other luxuries. The boys all have access to large amounts of money as exhibited throughout the books, but it is never truly discussed as to how they came to be wealthy or how they maintain it, other than through their Variant abilities.

I was on my way to the Zacarias mansion to get ready for an exclusive gala dinner. Josh had offered to pick me up, but I had insisted on walking, wanting to enjoy the nice weather. pg 214

I had yet to meet the elusive Lucian Zacarias. The boys had told me he would be at the event tonight but was flying in too late to make an appearance at home, instead staying at their apartment in the city—because of course they had an apartment in the city. On the Upper East Side. Where else?pg 218

I undid the black silk bow and lifted the silver lid, placing it on the table. Tissue paper—held together by a little round sticker with “Dior” embossed on it—concealed the box’s contents. pg 220

4. Read a book where a place (house, flat, office, barn etc.) gets renovated or built
On the ground floor, I had to step around sheets of drywall and several wheelbarrows full of debris. I frowned, cursing myself for not stealing a pair of Alec’s socks. What the hell were they doing up there? This renovation was taking forever. As I walked into the kitchen, the smell of coffee drove all thoughts of swinging hammers and messy demolition from my mind. pg 1010

5. Read a book with any cargo transport vehicle word in the text (cart, lorry, van, truck etc., plural form is accepted.)
They dragged me backward toward the van, and one of them shoved a face mask over my nose and mouth - pg 641

14. Read a book with some kind of furniture or decor piece on cover or the word in the text
To the left was a fully stocked bar complete with stools and four frantic waiters serving all manner of drinks. pg 97

18. Read a book with one of the 4 cardinal directions or their sub directions in the text (the adjectives are also accepted: North, Northern, Northwest(ern), etc.).
“Kid, Josh, take our girl home. I’ll send two teams to meet you in the underground parking garage in the north wing. Uncle Luce . . .” pg 955

B35. Read a book that connects some way to life in a small town or village: places, activities, institutions, etc. or what you would like to have at your imaginary settlement
“Welcome to Urahidaka,” Mr. Takata announced. We emerged onto the outskirts of the most picturesque place I’d ever seen. The houses were mostly wooden, built close together near the center of the village and more sparsely at the edges. Smoke rose from several chimneys, which jutted up from thatched and tiled roofs. Goats and geese wandered as freely as the villagers along cobblestone streets. The village was set into the side of a hill overlooking a valley. A few fat white clouds floated by lazily, but the afternoon sun cast a golden glow over the whole scene.
pg 1082

Great! I will look at that and add it in as well. I'm still working on cataloging all the reads and working out which cards I can play with which of my reads. I have the mini with the tasks pulled up as well. I'll update completion posts with any mini tasks the books meet.

Playing for Keeps (#UofJ #3) by Alley Ciz

3 - Series: Book #3 in the #UofJ series
6 - Character: Samantha "Savvy" King
6 - Character: Kevin Sanders

9 - Character: Noah Mitchell
9 - Character: Mason "Casanova" Nova
9 - Setting: New Jersey
Skip - Character: Kayla Dennings
Skip - Character: Kevin Sanderson
Skip - Character: CK (Chris) Kent

Mini:
13. Read a book with some kind of furniture or decor piece on cover or the word in the text
the other prominent wall made entirely of matching oak bookcases filled with leatherbound law books and priceless first editions. pg 218

27. Read a book with a character who has a pet(s) - Kayla "Kay" Dennings has a golden retriever named Herkie
Her arm goes around Herkie’s furry body as I tuck the covers in around her, hoping the blankets are enough to keep her from getting too chilled by the ice packs. “Sleep, baby.” I kiss her forehead and give Herkie an ear scratch and a “Good boy.” I’m closing the door behind me, making sure to leave it cracked in case the dog needs to leave, when I hear a whispered “Love you, Caveman.” page 103

10. Read a book with two of the five Feng Shui elements (wood, fire, earth, metal, water) in the text (plural form accepted).
There’s a working fireplace, wood burning and crackling as a fire burns in the hearth to help combat the chill of the winter. The wall behind the desk is floor-to-ceiling glass overlooking the manicured back yard pg 218

28. Read a book where both the words "home" and "library" can be found in the text
As the clock ticks closer to midnight, the rest of our friends start to say their goodbyes in groups. CK leaves with Em and Q, after confirming with G and me to meet in the library tomorrow for one last study session. pg 127
“Such a caveman.” That familiar sassy sparkle enters her gray eyes, and that sense of home that has nothing to do with the apartment and everything to do with this woman hits bone deep.pg 327

29. Read a book with a character who is moving to another place (can be just moving house or to a different geographic location)
At the end of the book, the group of friends move into a large penthouse apartment off campus for the remainder of their schooling.
“But you said this was our place?” A wave of snickers goes around the table at Kay’s question. “It is,” G answers. “Why else do you think it looks like MTV is doing a revival of The Real World?” Trav adds. I smooth a hand over my hat, rethinking this strategy. I don’t know if I’ll survive living with him and Kay under the same roof. I hope these walls are strong enough to handle the smartassery. One by one, each person around the table pulls out a matching keycard. “Could you and Em have gotten a smaller place for just the two of you?” I nod. “Sure. But this”—I circle a finger, gesturing to the penthouse around us—“makes it so I don’t have to worry about what could happen if you left to hang with the others.” pg 327

Yes. The third book features the house the main characters are living in being renovated in order to accommodate their uncle's wheelchair - which is necessary after an injury sustained in the second book.

The books also have the Cardinal directions as Nina sets them on the path to finding other Vitals and Vivids. Additionally, the book begins with Eve and her mother leaving Australia and flying to the US.

There are also many references to pieces of furniture in all three books.

Depending on what we are looking for for our "small town" the bulk of the books are set in Branford Hall University which is a college described as being in a small New England town with train access to NYC. I actually pictured it as being in Stamford, Fairfield or Greenwich CT as I am familiar with those towns and the train runs from there into Grand Central.

The plot centers around a college aged student who is studying genetics. She spends a lot of her time in libraries classrooms. Two of her partners are interested in cooking and reading classics.

In the third book of the trilogy the trio travels to small settlements in both Japan and Greece to meet with a Vivid (Japan) and then Greece to meet with the settlement of the Lighthunters.

Finally, this book is actually an Ominbus of three distinct novels. I believe the cover of one of the novels outside of this omnibus does have trees on it's cover.

I don't think that this works for 22. Read a book with any word related to the weather in the title or series title (any form is accepted, e.g.: rain(s), rainy, raining, etc.). "season, any of four divisions of the year according to consistent annual changes in the weather. " This is the official Britannica definition, so I figured this works. If you think it doesn't though, I'll match it to another task.

Annalisa | 1659 comments Inseyah, I did think about that aspect too. Let’s put that definition in the reason we used it. I don’t want UNO pixie to say it doesn’t work.

Insiyah (insiyahxo) | 503 comments Do you think it'd be best to check with the others? The book can work for the B tasks, furniture or decor tasks, or the four colours task as well.

Annalisa | 1659 comments If we have another book that works better for the task then yes. I’m not sure we do though.

Sorry. It was the 6th. I was getting tired and I had a kiddo distracting me with kiddo bedtime evasion stuff. I'll correct now. The read dates on my GR are correct as all books read in February were read for The Bachelor challenge and were for specific date tasks.

I'm so sorry Dänah. My sincere condolences to you and to your family.

Maggie Robinson (librariansdaughter77) | 149 comments This is the book I'm reading for the following Task:

-B33. Read a book from this list Small Towns - * Maggie

#13 on the list -
The Trouble In Willow Falls (Willow Falls Series Book 2) by Pat Nichols

I'll be starting this read later this evening.

Based on the Precis, could this book also be used to fit in with a task for a town having an inn or having a small theater or fixing up Main Street?

If needed I have a book for Red2 I can read - Wicked Appetite (Lizzy & Diesel, #1) by Janet Evanovich

However, I'm not sure if this one would help with the mini as well.
I can keep looking for another WD4 read that would work for a card and the mini. I just know this book is sitting upstairs in my daughter's room LOL

I found a red cover that works with a 9 and is set in a small town. I can read this one this week as well.
Main Male Character is named Noah.
Kiss the Girl by Melanie Jacobson

Thank you, Maggie. If you would enjoy the book go ahead and read it. I can easily move a book that fits a Red card around, though if it isn't interesting. I wasn't sure if someone was already reading for a color cover and hadn't finished the book yet. Insiyah and I can move things around to cover the WD4.
