Hi Tina. Weren't we on a team together last year or was it the year before? Melbourne's had a tough time but things seems to be improving a bit now. I hope you didn't get too bad a dose.

I started my first book as an audio while walking before work this morning.

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 949 comments I started my first one last night. I've never read a Desmond Bagley before. He was big in the 70's as a thriller writer. Interesting reading about an era I remember but had forgotten what we didn't have and also how society has changed.

By: Emily A. Duncan

I enjoyed it overall although there were some parts that frustrated me about one of the main characters. But the book overall managed to capture and keep my attention with plenty of action and twists. My overall rating for the book 3.5/5 Stars
Would recommend. :)

I gave this 3 stars. It's an entertaining, quick read but a bit too dated and with a basically implausible plot line.

Ruthless Gods (Something Dark and Holy, #2) by Emily A. Duncan
Book: Ruthless Gods

Rating: 3/5

Overall, I enjoyed the book. But I think I have a few more complaints with this one. The plot of the book overall all the characters will more or less betray one another for their own motivations. That's it. I mean more or less it's the middle book in a trilogy, so I feel like expectations can sometimes only go so far.

2 stars. I feel mean giving that score. It was a quicker read than I expected mainly because I wanted to see how it would end but I've never read a book where not one character was likable or was, or became, sympathetic.

Jax (jaxn) | 102 comments Draft No. 4: On the Writing Process
First book for this year's UNO. I really enjoyed this book on how to write well. Lots of interesting anecdotes from articles the author has written over 60 years of writing.

Pandora's Lab: Seven Stories of Science Gone Wrong
Second book! Did this one as an audio book. Highly recommend. Really good explanations of science concepts combined with history and lots of unintended outcomes.

Ella Wilson (readsbyella) | 49 comments I am starting with King of Scars which is a buddy read as well as, It's in His Kiss and The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue which is a book club read. I am also reading A Court of Wings and Ruin in hopes that I finish it and continue on with A Court of Frost and Starlight.

Also sorry if I am quite slow with my reads. I've just recently started year 12 and I am quite busy at the moment but I'll aim to get plenty of reading done still. I'll try my best to get each of my reads done but sorry if I don't get through them all before the end of the month.

Final book in the series, was fast paced, the character interactions were really fun and interesting in this book, and a lot of character development occurred. Made the book more interesting as the author fixed a lot of the flaws from the previous books.
If you enjoy the first one and make your way through the second one, this is definitely worth the read.

If I don't like the first book generally I won't continue with a series, but if I put time and effort into reading the next book in a series even if I disliked it or wasn't a fan, I don't like leaving the series partially finished so I will finish a series. And to be fair in Trilogies I tend to struggle with the middle book in the series the most anyway because usually that book is used as the build up to the final book, so sometimes it's just not as interesting.

I didn't actually start reading it then. I was just getting Goodreads ready for February as I knew this month is going to be super busy with year 12 and I wouldn't get a good opportunity to update it in the first week.

Another of Alan Furst's WW2 espionage stories set in Europe and featuring resistance fighters. He is expert at evoking a time and place--the desperation, fear, bravery, deprivation, cruelty, poverty and despair of people over run by a conquering power, in this case the French in their fight against Hitler's forces.

Shannon | 13 comments Finally finished my first book, Flights by Olga Tocarczuk!

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3...

Overall, would recommend. It has a lot of interesting meditations on travel, the human body, aging, and tricks the mind can play at any stage of life. It is not a quick read, but is composed of about 130 vignettes, ranging from half a page to 35 pages, so can be a nice book to dip in and out of and meditate on.

I promise I will be much faster with the other books. :)

Shannon | 13 comments Finished my second book today, The Waves by Virginia Woolf. It was my first time reading it, though I have read most others by her. It is very unusual in that it switches between six different stream of consciousness voices, and it's not always clear who is speaking/thinking until well into certain passages. At times, it reads more like poetry than prose, but it definitely held my attention. You can just feel the compassion and sometimes disgust for humanity coursing through each phrase, and she certainly describes nature unlike any other writer I have encountered. The style left me wondering if it was really about six different people or six different facets of one person. Definitely recommend.

I've been thinking of rereading some of my Virginia Woolf's and could read one if we need a reverse sometime in the game. I read Mrs Dalloway at school and was one of the few in my class who liked it. I haven't got The Waves though. Sounds interesting.

Jax (jaxn) | 102 comments Finished The Other Black Girl last night. Wasn't on my list of books to read but I was in the library and it was on our "lucky finds" shelf. (Do other libraries do this? They take ultra popular books that have huge wait times and put a few copies in the system as 2 week loaners that you can't reserve. You are just "lucky" to spot them on the lucky shelf and can grab them.) Anyways, saw this and one other book I was mildly interested in (How the Word is Passed) when I was returning books and grabbed it since I had heard a lot of buzz about them. That whole digression is a lot to say I didn't care for the book. The premise and twist were interesting but to get there it took forever and at times it felt repetitive.

Jax (jaxn) | 102 comments I don't have strong feelings either way but if we do list B I have one of the books on the Small Towns list (#100) on my shelf to be read this month anyways.

Looking at the main post there's 32 tasks that everyone does and then if we pick A or B means we have tasks 33-40 to match either big city or small town. And these can also be books that we are already using for UNO. Is that correct?
