Just checking in. I’ve been in isolation due to getting sick with the bug that’s going on all around the world.
I probably won’t be active for the rest of the week and haven’t been readi..."
Hi Tina. Weren't we on a team together last year or was it the year before? Melbourne's had a tough time but things seems to be improving a bit now. I hope you didn't get too bad a dose.

I started my first book as an audio while walking before work this morning.

By: Emily A. Duncan
I enjoyed it overall although there were some parts that frustrated me about one of the main characters. But the book overall managed to capture and keep my attention with plenty of action and twists. My overall rating for the book 3.5/5 Stars
Would recommend. :)

The Freedom Trap

I gave this 3 stars. It's an entertaining, quick read but a bit too dated and with a basically implausible plot line.

Me: I'm not really liking this book so far. The people are all horrible.
Husband: Why are you reading it?
Me: It has a blue cover

Book: Ruthless Gods
Author: Emily A. Duncan
Rating: 3/5
Overall, I enjoyed the book. But I think I have a few more complaints with this one. The plot of the book overall all the characters will more or less betray one another for their own motivations. That's it. I mean more or less it's the middle book in a trilogy, so I feel like expectations can sometimes only go so far.

The Party by Robyn Harding

2 stars. I feel mean giving that score. It was a quicker read than I expected mainly because I wanted to see how it would end but I've never read a book where not one character was likable or was, or became, sympathetic.

First book for this year's UNO. I really enjoyed this book on how to write well. Lots of interesting anecdotes from articles the author has written over 60 years of writing.
Pandora's Lab: Seven Stories of Science Gone Wrong
Second book! Did this one as an audio book. Highly recommend. Really good explanations of science concepts combined with history and lots of unintended outcomes.

Also sorry if I am quite slow with my reads. I've just recently started year 12 and I am quite busy at the moment but I'll aim to get plenty of reading done still. I'll try my best to get each of my reads done but sorry if I don't get through them all before the end of the month.

Book: Blessed Monsters
Author: Emily A. Duncan
Rating: 4/5
Final book in the series, was fast paced, the character interactions were really fun and interesting in this book, and a lot of character development occurred. Made the book more interesting as the author fixed a lot of the flaws from the previous books.
If you enjoy the first one and make your way through the second one, this is definitely worth the read.

That's interesting you persisted, Jen. I wonder how many readers are put off by a second book they don't like and give up on a series.

Just a reminder that you cannot use King of Scars as you started it Jan 22, which is before UNO. Otherwise, I hope you enjoy all of them.

Jax, that sounds interesting. Also, could you please add a date read to both your books on your UNO shelf? I did not see one this morning. Thank you

If I don't like the first book generally I won't continue with a series, but if I put time and effort into reading the next book in a series even if I disliked it or wasn't a fan, I don't like leaving the series partially finished so I will finish a series. And to be fair in Trilogies I tend to struggle with the middle book in the series the most anyway because usually that book is used as the build up to the final book, so sometimes it's just not as interesting.

I didn't actually start reading it then. I was just getting Goodreads ready for February as I knew this month is going to be super busy with year 12 and I wouldn't get a good opportunity to update it in the first week.
I actually started reading King of Scars on the 1st of February.

Red Gold by Alan Furst

4 stars
Another of Alan Furst's WW2 espionage stories set in Europe and featuring resistance fighters. He is expert at evoking a time and place--the desperation, fear, bravery, deprivation, cruelty, poverty and despair of people over run by a conquering power, in this case the French in their fight against Hitler's forces.

Also, Tina, hope you are feeling better.
Otherwise, hope everyone is doing well and enjoying your reading

I’m around halfway done with Maybe Someday, and to be honest, im not loving it. I’ll still try to finish it, but I apologize if it takes me a few more days to finish it.
I also plan to get through Beach Read & The Gilded Wolves this week.

Just finished this book. Checks off a lot of cards and is a fast read. It's YA, funny and moves along at a fair clip. If you like quirky stories, fantasy, stories about finding your own power or just need something unusual this would be a good pick.

Mary,
No worries, no books have been removed. They are just hidden to keep things orderly. If you want to check yours, just click unhide on the column numbers, and there they are (Click where the number jumps from 7 to 22, and they are hiding there).

Glad you enjoyed it. T. Kingfisher is one of my all time favorite authors. Have you read any other by her? Her other MG is Minor Mage, which I really like as well.

Book: Thief Prince
Rating: 4/5
This book is actually a re-read for me, although it's been a few years. The book has a simple story, that's easy to follow and interesting, with a good overall message.

Aldous Huxley
4 stars
I read this in the 70's and then it was a real scifi imaginative trip. Now it seems frighteningly prescient, the way 1984 does.

Overall, would recommend. It has a lot of interesting meditations on travel, the human body, aging, and tricks the mind can play at any stage of life. It is not a quick read, but is composed of about 130 vignettes, ranging from half a page to 35 pages, so can be a nice book to dip in and out of and meditate on.
I promise I will be much faster with the other books. :)

Hope everyone is doing well
I should be able to get a book read before next week

Finished February 8th

Maybe Someday
2.25 Stars
I pretty much forced myself to read about the first 70% of the book, and I really did not enjoy the plotline or either of the main characters. It was an interesting take on ya/na romance, but it wasn't for me.

Alina, sorry it was no good and hope your next book is better. I just finished a reread as I have been on a run of very average books recently

I apologise for not being here.
Will make sure to drop in every week. I'm aware I should have done atleast quick updates.
I've read two books.
First Book - The Hating Game
Author - Sally Thorne
Second Book - Beach Read
Author - Emily Henry
Regarding the second Book, Alina, how are you liking it so far?

Date Completed: Feb 9, 2022

Book: There Will Come a Darkness
Author: Katy Rose Pool
Rating: 4/5 Stars
This took me a bit longer than I anticipated, but I ended up enjoying this quite a bit. The characters were all interesting and the author spent time developing each of them. I always enjoy a book that has multiple perspectives.

Also, I'm super excited for the mini-challenges! I will definitely be participating as much as I can! Good luck everyone!

I've been thinking of rereading some of my Virginia Woolf's and could read one if we need a reverse sometime in the game. I read Mrs Dalloway at school and was one of the few in my class who liked it. I haven't got The Waves though. Sounds interesting.

When I lived in Boston, they had a lucky shelf but not my current library

General Rules
* Each task is worth 10 points, with a 40 point bonus for finishing it all!
* All the usual book rules apply. Books may be used in both the mini and the regular Uno cards.
* Books must be started since the start of UNO, and must be finished after the start of the mini.
***Countdown to start of mini:https://www.timeanddate.com/countdown...

Looking at the main post there's 32 tasks that everyone does and then if we pick A or B means we have tasks 33-40 to match either big city or small town. And these can also be books that we are already using for UNO. Is that correct?
