Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments Are we in need of another color book, or I should I save this for another round:

Looks like we have the Red 4 and all the Wild cards covered. Or is this helpful for something else? I'm still a little vague on how the draw 2 cards work. Is that basically a free spot?

I Am Half-Sick of Shadows (Flavia de Luce, #4) by Alan Bradley

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 949 comments I appear more organised this year than before because I've signed up for lots of annual challenges which dictate certain genres etc. One is a calendar challenge where we read a book starting with the letter of the month. We can do an author as well if we like. That explains my two books with F for February--The Freedom Trap and Red Gold by Alan Furst I've been meaning to reread Brave New World for ages and it also fits a genre challenge. I like the challenges because they make me read more widely and also the Australian based ones must include a minimum number of Aus authors which is great.

And pretty much everything counts for UNO. Bonus!

Actually I like reading everyone's completion posts and the comment idea is great. It's easy to miss them on the SS.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments I have 4 on the spreadsheet for now. I'll add more once I know what I need to read for 2 other team challenges. One is series # based which is awesome for working into Uno.

My boss, aka my Mother is heading to Florida on Wed for a couple of months. That means more audio book time at the office for me. Or at home, winter is our slower time and I often work from home more.

Lexi | 736 comments Mary, every color card but the Green 7 is covered for now but we may need it by the end of the month if books end up moving around (as they often do).

Draw 2 's allow one book to cover two sports, so they are basically free but also give us less points.

message 56: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments I'll see if I have anything for Green 7. The Red 4 book I have is on Hoopla so I can check it out any time.

Jax (jaxn) | 102 comments Would Pandora's Lab Seven Stories of Science Gone Wrong by Paul A. Offit be green enough to be the green 7? I'm already reading it for another group?

Ella Wilson (readsbyella) | 49 comments Another suggestion I have for the green 7 is A Court of Mist and Fury with the setting of Velaris and green cover. I would be happy to reread it or if someone else wants they can read it!

message 59: by Elisabeth (new)

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 949 comments There are links to lists of color cover books on the Read Me First page. Message 5.

Lexi | 736 comments Jax wrote: "Would Pandora's Lab Seven Stories of Science Gone Wrong by Paul A. Offit be green enough to be the green 7? I'm already reading it for another group?"

It is green enough but I don't see how it would fit for the 7 (letter V), esp as it is non-fiction. See Ella's example with Velaris and a green cover.

Great idea

Just a reminder for everyone that the cover you use must be the version you read so in this example, you would need to read the copy with the green cover

Yes, but these are more for ideas as anyone can add covers to the lists so some don't work

message 63: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 736 comments In the past, I have read The Ghosts of Sherwood (The Robin Hood Stories, #1) by Carrie Vaughn by Carrie Vaughn for Green 7 (green cover, A: Vaughn).

True and a lot of them have many different covers so finding the right one is hard--and that fits the number. No telling if there are characters in there that fit.

I guess it helps if we're searching for something at the library. though.

That book sounds really interesting!

message 68: by Ella (new)

Ella Wilson (readsbyella) | 49 comments Just also as a note:
We still need:
3 more books related to something in the 7 column
3 more books related to something in the 8 column
And then I think we would have covered all our bases!

Okay! I hope you'll enjoy it! Sounds quite intriguing!

message 70: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 736 comments Since books can't be used in more than one place, we still need a lot of books, but Ella makes a good point that as people read, can you mark E and V characters as those can be harder to find. (I's as well even if we have fewer this round).

Mostly, after the color cards, read whatever you want, as I have almost never had issues making books fit. It also helps if people mark all options.

Ooh yes! Definitely agree re the BBC version. Jennifer Ehle is perfect as Elizabeth, too.

Lexi | 736 comments Shannon wrote: "Do the hands for February come out all at one time on February 1?"

The cards for the entire month of Feb are in message 6: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

message 81: by Elisabeth (last edited Jan 27, 2022 03:43PM) (new)

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 949 comments And we get a Mini Challenge mid month which is always fun.

Don't these last few days before we're allowed to start our Feb reads go slowly? I just finished a book I thought would take me through nicely to Feb so now I'm reading an Agatha Christie, which doesn't suit any cards, and trying to pace myself. hahaha I'm also reading Anna Karenina on my Kobo but that's a long project. Really enjoying it though.

message 82: by Shannon (new)

Shannon | 13 comments Ah, okay, thank you! I have read the instructions a few times, but am still a little confused about how we move through the hands. We have to finish each one before moving on to the next, right? Just want to make sure I order and structure reading correctly to contribute the best I can. Thanks!

message 83: by Elisabeth (new)

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 949 comments The distribution of cards in the hands is Lexi's domain so we just read our planned books as we like and add the info to the planning sheet.

I don't think we have to finish each hand before reading books to fit the next but we can't claim points at the end of the month for hands that come after an incomplete one . eg Lexi can put the colour cover books in where they fit as people read them rather than wait for that hand to come up.

message 84: by Shannon (new)

Shannon | 13 comments That all makes sense, thanks for explaining!

message 85: by Elisabeth (new)

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 949 comments It's all confusing at first and I'm sure Lexi will explain it better and correct me if I'm wrong. But it's great fun which is why I love UNO time each year.

message 86: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments Once the game starts it gets easier to understand.

We can read the cards in any order, ,we just have to have them all done by the end of the month to get credit for all. For example If we finish hands 1-8 and 10, 11 and 12 but don't finish hand #9, then we only get credit for hands 1-9. That's why it's helpful to list list everything a book works for so the captains can move books around if needed.

message 87: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments I wish this started today or tomorrow. We're about to be snowed in for the weekend if that Nor'easter hits us like we're expecting. We're supposed to get a minimum of 7" of snow and possibly 15" with 45mph winds. We're used to that here in Massachusetts so we're all prepped and ready. I'll have lots of reading time this weekend if I want. We probably won't leave the house again until Monday morning. I'm working from home today.

I saw that. Where is I lived last winter in MA is getting ~17 inches. Sounds like a good weekend to stay inside and warm. I have two books I need to finish up so I can start fresh for UNO but otherwise, excited to start too.

This is correct. Thank you, Mary and Elisabeth

See here in the rules:

◈ Note: . Just remember, you can only get points if a hand is completed, and in order.
So, if you complete all of hand 1, some of hand 2, and all of hand 3, you will only get points for hand 1 and the books read of hand 2.

message 90: by Jax (new)

Jax (jaxn) | 102 comments For the minis....would those need the same books as the regular UNO or would some of my oddball reads maybe slot in better there? (I know all books fit into standby but for some books that's the only thing they fit into.)

Also I made a new UNO shelf for this year, sorry for the confusion.
https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

message 91: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 736 comments Thank you, UNO mini books are also used for the main hand cards and usually have very specific prompts. There is no way to guess what ahead of time.

message 92: by Elisabeth (new)

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 949 comments Seeing as we're team Pemberley I'd hazard a guess that one of the mini prompts will involve books with a link in some way to Jane Austen/her books, romance, historicals, families or sisters, grand houses/ estates, England etc. Sometimes there are cover pictures to find too. eg last year I read "a book with a beautiful dress on the cover". But who knows? Sometimes I find I have a most unlikely book in my TBR pile that fits.

Good grief, Mary! We're finally getting some summer weather here in Aus but I can't imagine coping with that sort of snow. We have friends in Gloucester MA who live in a big old house right on the water and send us news of dreadful storms etc. as well as beautiful photos of the coast.

message 94: by Ella (new)

Ella Wilson (readsbyella) | 49 comments Are there challenges that we have to complete as well? I thought all we had to do was find books that matched our set of cards and aim to reads those before the end of the month. I didn't realise that there were going to be challenges to do during the month

message 95: by Elisabeth (new)

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 949 comments You don't have to take part in the minis, Ella, but you'll probably find a book you're reading fits anyway. Sometimes it's as simple as finding a particular word in the text. And the books count for regular UNO as well so you don't have to change anything. Don't worry. We're a team so we all contribute in our own way.

message 96: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 736 comments Yes for the second half of the month each month is the mini challenge. They are my favorite part. They tend to be very creative. Each team is a fictional place so that will likely effect the theme. I’m excited to see what the mods have planned.

message 97: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 570 comments We go on a group couples' trip to Gloucester every September. They are probably getting the wind bad. We live in a valley and sometimes snow storms get stuck over us. But we're usually spared the brunt of hurricanes.
