Allie Loveridge | 2 comments Context:
I read the book in middle school, in Canada, about 13 years ago. It was in the class room, but was not a required reading.

Publishing period:
Based on the cover, likely 1960s to 1995
Read around 2007-2008, so it has to be published before 2008.

Setting:
North America

Premise:
(I can really only remember the first chapter or so, but this general premise)

It is set in the early settlement period of North America (I think). The book begins with a young homeless/nomadic man (?) waking up under a coniferous tree (like a pine tree maybe) in the late fall or early winter. Following his inner-dialog he basically notes that he doesn't have that much to eat and so he drinks some cold water from a nearby creek/stream and tightens his belt to stop himself from feel so hungry (I'm not sure about the water part, but the part about him tightening his belt is definitely in the book -- i remember it specifically because I thought was a wild concept).

The young man then ends up hiding in a cow shed/barn one night (it might have been during a storm) and covers himself in straw or hay to keep warm. I'm also pretty sure there is a cow in the barn, who is named something like Bes, Bessy, or Daisy. While hiding in the barn the owner of the barn/shed, or maybe the daughter of the family that owns it, comes into the building to check on the cow (and maybe other animals in the barn, but definitely to check on the cow) and find the young man.

The young woman befriends the young homeless/nomadic man, and basically saves him (i think).

I think it might have been set during the civil war or something, because the father/patriarch of the farm isn't there in the beginning (he might have been out fighting in a war or something, or out looking for work if it was during the Great Depression/dust bowl era, but I'm not sure at all).

I'm also pretty sure the young man might have been hurt at some point in the book, but I could definitely be getting that part confused with another book.

Note:
I'm 100% positive it's not a love story/romance novel because it was in my middle school.
I've been looking for this book for a few year and have had no luck finding it ... local public library catalogue searches, google (etc.)

The general look:
The book cover had two people on it, a young man and women, with a purple-ish blue-ish background, a moon, and I think a old looking barn/shed.
The book cover has a drawing-style similar to what you would see on an 'Apple Paperback' book from the 80s/90s (but is not an Apple Paperback book, I already looked through their publications).
