We are going all out to end 2021 and we are going to start off 2022 with a bang! End Strong, Start Strong End of the Year Readathon from December 24, 2021 to January 2, 2022!

How many books do you have left to meet your GR goal (if you haven't already met it)?

Have you modified it at all this year?

What's your goal for 2022?

Any other personal reading goals besides the GR Challenge?

Do you consciously pick a book for your first read of the new year or is it whatever comes up next in your TBR?

message 2: by Charleen (new)

Charleen (charleenlynette) | 1688 comments This is perfect since it leads right into Bout of Books starting on the 3rd.

I need one more book to meet my goal of 100, and I have two books in progress (one I might finish today!) and another two I plan to read before the year ends. I like to start the new year with a clean slate, so I won't be pushing to add to that number, although if I have time I might try to find something quick and fun.

Next year I'll be doing the Mount TBR challenge for the first time. My goals are 24 books I own and 60 books I don't. I still haven't settled on an overall goal number, but I'm leaning towards 85.

I have a handful of titles in mind to read early next year, but nothing specific as the first book.

message 3: by Carol (new)

Carol (carol07) | 4342 comments Yay! An End of the Year Readathon! I am in.

I have met and exceeded my GR goal. I think it was originally 250, and I bumped it up to 290 books. Am currently at about 305. My big goal that I met was finishing all the books that I put on the list in 2017.

For 2022, I think I am going to try to read 250 books. Am also going to try to get all the books off the list that I added in 2018. Only 14, so if I stay focused...

For my first read of the year, I don't consciously pick a book, but in the back of my mind, I am already planning out my 75 Books...More or Less! ABC Book/Author Challenge. I like to get it done as soon as I can.

Icy-Cobwebs-In-Space (readingreindeerproximacentauri) | 325 comments I passed my 2021 goal. Going to set it a little lower for 2022, probably 250.
I'll be doing Mount TBR and Virtual Mount TBR for 3rd year each. Continuing challenges here and some in Hooked on Books (monthly, weeklong, weekend, 24), and Seasons of Reading Readathons, plus monthly themes at Devour Your TBR and Genreland; but not planning to do many challenges beyond these: going with an "organic" approach, what catches my eye at a given moment. For 2021 I did choose "First Read": Persephone Station. For 2022 I'm thinking Moon Lake and something Adrian Tchaikovsky.

Shelby Suderman | 2180 comments I’ve got one book I’m still reading, which I need to finish before the end of the year. I always set my GR challenge low so I know I can hit it, but this year set it at only 30 instead of my usual 40 because of my goal to focus on some big books this year. I’m glad I did, because I didn’t feel as much pressure to read those quickly, but im ready for shorter books and digging into some series again next year.

I’ve been wanting to do the ABC Challenge again next year, but also I don’t like having to dive for books to fit each letter like I did last time a few years ago. I want to do challenges that motivate me to get books OFF my tbr, not scrambling for something new that fits a letter. I finally worked out a compromise.

To that end, my main reading challenge for 2022 will be the RYO-ABC Challenge. It goes like this: The goal is to do the ABC challenge, but for every letter I don’t have something I want that fits it, I will read TWO books on my tbr from before 2020. Takes the stress out of it, and I feel good about getting stuff off my tbr. This will involve some shuffling around as what I read changes, but I don’t actually care.

I still have three books I need to read before April for the Magical Readathon, those being Castle in the Air (Howl's Moving Castle, #2) by Diana Wynne Jones , The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab , and Dreadnought (Nemesis #1) by April Daniels . The last two I’m doing as buddy reads here on the group, and if I get roughly one done per the first three months, I should be happy with that. I don’t pick as much of my tbr as I used to. With everything I read for either research or TFIL, I don’t have the time for more.

My goal for this year was 175. I think I need 40 more so its not looking too good for me. I have a couple books going so I think I will get to 150. I changed positions and locations at work this year and my commute dropped down from 40 minutes to 20. Then in July we moved and my commute is not 4 minutes. It’s also just been a crazy year personally and professionally.

My goal for 2022 is going to be 100 books and then I will reevaluate as needed. I really want to do better with self care and work life balance this year.

I’m excited to spend another year reading with all of you and spending time together chatting about books.

I’m in the same boat! Didn’t get much reading done today, but tomorrow it’s going to be all day readathon. We have leftovers to eat and not much to clean. I have one errand to run that will take 20 minutes.

Shelby Suderman | 2180 comments So I sat down and did some serious reading in Imaginary Friend by Stephen Chbosky . At LONG LAST I have finished Part 5, aka the longest part ever. That twist tho. O.o

I finished Model Home last night, a cute short story based on some of the home reno shows you see on channels like HGTV. This morning I finished Accidentally Engaged, a cute romantic comedy I started a couple of days ago. This afternoon I finished another short story The Last Line (Tracy Crosswhite #8.5). This was a new author for me and I really like the writing and story. I'm going to listen to some more short stories while I try to catch up on reviews.

I spent most of the day reading or listening to books. I have 27 books left to read in 5 days...hahah I would feel better about this if I didn't have a really busy week at work. I'm covering for one of my staff that gets a lot of calls, another manger and we are also short at the front desk. I probably wont get too much listening done during the day. I'm going to try to actually take my lunch and breaks and get some quick stuff done. I might be crazy!

I didn't get as much reading done yesterday as I had planned to. Motivation struck and I cleaned up Christmas stuff and got chores done. I read some of The Last House on the Street by Diane Chamberlain which I'm buddy reading in another group. I did listen to a bit of Journey to the Heart of the Abyss (Light the Abyss, #2) by London Shah while cleaning. Hoping to finish it today so I can start listening to The Eye of the World (The Wheel of Time, #1) by Robert Jordan for #ChunksterReadathon on Instagram. Also need to read Empire of Storms (Throne of Glass, #5) by Sarah J. Maas for the same readathon.

Charleen (charleenlynette) | 1688 comments Christmas weekend update:

A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens read 48 pages (finished)
This is my 3rd re-read. Started Christmas Eve and finished Christmas morning.

The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg read 37 pages (finished)
This is our Christmas Eve bedtime story tradition. The 6yo knows the story very well by now and looks forward to it. The 2yo was more attentive than last year, but still pretty squirmy. She doesn't quite have the patience for longer picture books with more than one sentence per page.

A Princess in Theory (Reluctant Royals, #1) by Alyssa Cole listened 83 min (61%)

I hope everyone who celebrates had a great holiday!

message 17: by Stacie (new)

Stacie (stacieh) | 1945 comments I listened to A Christmas Carol (read by Neil Gaiman) by Charles Dickens (sadly, not very impressed- even with one of my favorite author/narrators reading a copy abridged by Dickens himself... it was still abridged. Bleh.) and read How the Grinch Stole Christmas! by Dr. Seuss over FaceTime to my great-niece on the 24th, and 11 hours of Exploring the Roots of Religion by John R. Hale between yesterday and today.

I read a little of The Last House on the Street by Diane Chamberlain and I got to page 211 of Empire of Storms (Throne of Glass, #5) by Sarah J. Maas yesterday.
I also read Incubators A Graphic History by Paige V Polinsky .
I did finish listening to Journey to the Heart of the Abyss (Light the Abyss, #2) by London Shah but I decided to not start The Wheel of Time this year (and I'm already reading Empire of Storms for #ChunksterReadathon) and focus on a couple of past due NetGalley audiobooks this week. Starting with The Hawthorne School by Sylvie Perry .

message 20: by Karina (new)

Karina | 1069 comments Something about the latter half of 2021 really left me in a funk with reading. I was NOT reading at the pace and more importantly, the joy that reading gives/gave me. I am not going to reach my goal of 75 books which felt like such a weight around my neck every time I would log into Goodreads and the counter was telling me I was x many books behind my goal. Finally, at some point in October, I stopped caring. I was going to read if I wanted to read. If I was actually enjoying reading. I found that sense of love and enjoyment back in November. I am not exactly happy that I will not make this arbitrary goal I set for myself but I will not be beating myself up. I am hoping to finish reading 60 books. I am very happy with that. With that being said and getting THAT off of my chest, here are the books I hope to finish by years end:

The Meaning of Mariah Carey (currently listening to the audio book)

Dead Letters (currently reading)

Night & The Wife are two shorter stories I hope to finish while I am on PTO.

Busy day today but I sat down with my first book of the year, a reread of A Kiss of Shadows (Merry Gentry, #1) by Laurell K. Hamilton .

I have a minor surgery tomorrow (yes on a Sunday) so will probably not be reading much due to the anesthesia. So that's a huge bummer.

I should probably update my 2021 thread and create my 2022 threads. lol.

Brian was climbing the walls so we took a ride and walked around Whole Foods to stretch our legs. I did sneak in a 5 book short story series that was cute.
