Just completed #18 (romance by bipoc) - Night Song by Beverly Jenkins. Given that this was her first published novel, it is impressive that she managed to combine little-known history with compelling characters and a good story. It’s a bit long and includes a lot, something that she’s mastered in her current work. Very open door. I would happily never read or hear the descriptor virginal used to describe a woman or her physical attributes ever again. Worth reading! 4 stars

36. A book you know nothing about
The Mystery of Mrs. Christie
Despite having read a lot of Agatha Christie books in my years I had NO IDEA that she went missing for 12 days!

Just completed #33 (social-horror) - Cultish: The Language of Fanaticism by Amanda Montell. Really interesting exploration of how language influences humans and society to the cult extremes. But it also looks at how those influences can be used in fitness, politics, misinformation, religion, among others. Good audio! Worth reading! 4 stars

#24: A book you can read in one sitting: Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach
7/50

Just completed #24 (one-sitting) - The Wedding Setup: A Short Story by Sonali Dev. This was a perfect gem of a short story! To introduce the characters, plot, conflict, and resolve all with the required hea is difficult to do well in a novel. To do that with such emotional effect in the confines of a short story is the mark of a true master. Definitely worth reading! 5 stars

✓11. A #BookTok recommendation: People We Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry (finished 1/30)

Just completed #34 (set in Victorian times) - The Hidden Palace by Helene Wecker. Beautiful writing and lush descriptions are this author’s signature. Her characters are complex. However, there were parts of the story that were too long, and at points, I wanted to yell at them to grow up and use their words. But it was an interesting sequel to the first book. Worth reading. 4 stars

30. A book with the name of a board game in the title - You, Me, and the Colors of Life read 2/4/2022

Just completed #9 (found family) - Love Me, If You Dare by Alyssa Clarke. Overall, this was an enjoyable book. I appreciated some of the unique elements the author introduced. However, it seemed at moments that the action was lost in between plot points. I had to repeat paragraphs a few times to see if I missed something, and I did not, it was just missing. This was the author’s debut, so I’m hoping it gets worked out in the next book. Loved the main characters, and I’ll be continuing with the series. Worth reading. 3.5 stars

Just completed #19 (fav season - winter, but in FL😉) - Mercy Street by Jennifer Haigh. Honest and brutal is the best description I can give for this book. It is well-written with developed characters. There are difficult chapters written from the perspective of a racist, sexist white man, so that was disconcerting but brutally honest as well. Apart from those chapters, I really enjoyed the rest of the book! Place and weather are also depicted almost like additional characters. “Over the years, Claudia had heard the same words from teenagers and middle-aged women; from nurses and teachers, cops and soldiers; sex workers and rape victims and survivors of incest. It was a lesson they’d been taught from birth, swallowed and digested: at all times, in all circumstances, the woman was to blame.” “Claudia thought of the protesters gathered on Mercy Street: the church going faithful, the celibate priests and monks. Would they have any interest in Shannon F. - a homeless addict who haunted the brick sidewalks of downtown crossing, harassing tourists for spare change – if she weren’t pregnant? Preventing her abortion was all they cared about. The bleak struggle of her life – the stark daily realities that made motherhood impossible – didn’t trouble them at all.” My only quibble with this book is the ending felt a bit too convenient. I received this book as a free giveaway in exchange for my honest review. Definitely worth reading! 4.5 stars

Just completed #20 (begins with last letter of previous read - T) - The Cowboy's Claim by Nina Crespo. This was light and enjoyable. I liked the setting and the characters. Action and dialogue got a bit muddled at times, but overall entertaining. Worth reading. 3.5 stars
