Popsugar Challenge - 2022

Just completed #36 (unknown book) - The Wives by Tarryn Fisher. I have mixed feelings about this book. It kept me guessing until the end, and I understand the point the author was trying to make. But the arc felt inauthentic to the main character. The ending left me unsettled, but not in a satisfying way. Not sure if I recommend. 3.5 stars

While the first was my favourite book of the series, I've enjoyed all the books. The seventh book is out now.

#29: A different book by an author I read in 2021:
Concrete Rose by Angie Thomas

Just completed #38 (features a party) - The Tsarina's Daughter by Ellen Alpsten. Overall, really enjoyable historical fiction. It took me a bit to get situated in the time period. The author does mention the suffering of the Russian people contrasted to the ostentation of the royalty. I enjoyed learning more about the history, and the author’s interpretation of historical figures’ actions. I received this book as a free giveaway in exchange for my honest review. Worth reading! 4 stars

Just completed #1 (pub 2022) - The Maid by Nita Prose. Enjoyed this mystery! Loved the main character, how she was described and how she viewed the world. I enjoyed how the story unfolded, though it was a bit long in the middle. I appreciate that the author used her experiences working with special needs children to inform her creation of the character. Definitely worth reading! 4.5 stars

31. A book featuring a man-made disaster: Love After the End: An Anthology of Two-Spirit and Indigiqueer Speculative Fiction Most of the stories feature a not-so-distant apocalyptic future where humans have actively destroyed the planet.

30. A book with the name of a board game in the title:
Scythe by Neal Shusterman
40. A book that fulfils your favourite prompt from a past PopSugar challenge -> Read a book about time travel (2018 challenge):
Outlander by Diana Gabaldon.

Just completed #12 (afterlife) - Ghost Stories of Tampa Bay by Kim Cool. I appreciate learning more history about my hometown. I will definitely be investigating more and desperately want to go on a ghost tour the next time I’m back in town. However, the stories in this book were less narratives but more like vignettes of the author’s thoughts and experiences. Not what I was expecting from the title. 3 stars

I plan to continue the series. I wonder how many the author plans on for it?

Just completed #29 (author reading in 2021) - How to Be a Movie Star by T. J. Klune. Heart-warming, lovely, understanding - this was a fabulous book! I loved the characters and the beautiful, oddness that made them perfectly imperfect. This author’s signature kindness in his writing with moments of hilarious absurdity shine brightly! Definitely worth reading! 5 stars
13/50

Just completed #39 (Ownvoices fantasy) - A Chorus Rises by Bethany C. Morrow. The beginning of this book was a bit irritating. I’m not a fan of petulant teen. But the author used that to start character progression that became very satisfying. I really appreciate the message she was conveying. Really good ending. Worth reading! 4 stars
