Choko wrote: "Hailee, I am totally in for a BR for When Christ and his Saints Slept!!!"Me too! Does it matter what order SKP's books are read?
Very cool picture of the maze, Hailee, thanks for sharing that. I can picture Godefroi traveling it on his knees.
A buddy read of WC&HSS sounds fun. I wouldn't be able to fit it in before about mid May though.EDIT: Ooh and I promised to buddy read Pillars of Earth with Zaara as well which should come first. You're both joining that buddy read as well I believe? But we'll fit WC&HSS in somewhere 😅. Are you interested in WC&HSS Zaara?
Veronica you can read any of her series or her standalones in any order I think. WC&HSS is book 1 of 5 in her Plantagenets series.
THE CASTLE Yeesh, I read this chapter ages ago and (then got into Primce of Thorns and) it had completely slipped my mind that I had yet to post notes.

3 stars. Favourite scene : Richard de Godefroi has an outdoor reading nook and loves to read stories of knights. :-Don’t we all?? I dunno why they call prostitution the oldest profession when storytelling could sit right alonger it and no questions asked.
Re 77, I'm sorry I must have missed this amid all the posts...WHOA, and this is Europe NOW in the present day? Why does she stick arnd, Choc? I mean if the person is a fundamentally good person, she can at least think of attempting some sort of platonic relationship but this man will have dried her up inside (in the respect, mostly). I will have set a second empty place setting for the "wife that shoulda been there" and legged it. I’m sure she has her reasons tho but like you, can’t help feeling angry for her.
And also *hugs* I see the Founding has hit you hard, I accidentally glanced at the post and saw the unspoilered bit. I’ve started the chapter but didn’t read your actual post as yet because. We’ll be here SOONISH. I’m so glad you’re back.
Re 107 When have I ever said no? :D
I’m happy we’re starting more histfic BRs. I didn’t even know this group has a historical fiction thread and only saw it recently...
I'd also like to read the Sunne in Splendour.
Yes Choko and Veronica, we are enjoying this read so much that I really hope we read Pillars together...like she said asap early summer...it's such a good book!
Pillars...I think I started that one a few years ago but put it away fairly early, I wanna say. (view spoiler) I had to roll my eyes and set the book aside, never picked it up again. I actually think I resold the book to the used bookstore.
Zaara, Re: post 77.. I know, right?! But Romany women are taught that they need to to obey their husbands and that they're lucky to be married. At least he abstain from prostituting her, because that is a very typical way a woman who comes to the marriage "used" is expected to earn for the family, until she can... Just as with most such cultures, it is wonderful and horrible at the same time... I get to be who I am today only because my grandma had the guts to escape when she was 14 to a different tribe, because her parents were about to sell her to be a wife to a 45 year old man... She took her little sister and two brothers and took off. Married for love, which was absolutely unthinkable! She is my hero!
Finished The FoundingChoko, I hear you. It was tough to read about the treatment of the Jews. It would be easier to read about stuff like that if humanity had evolved to a point where racism and prejudice based on anything other than the character of the individual person was a thing of the past but, sadly, that is not the case. We still live in a society where the unscrupulous engage in fear mongering to separate people into "us" versus "them".
(view spoiler)
Veronica, I had a very hard time getting back to the book because of all those emotions, exactly because it was so real, and because there are still people perpetuating those attitudes... And here we are still stating every day that G-d is One for all of us...Sh'ma Yisrael Adonai Eloheinu Adonai Eḥad ("Hear, O Israel: the LORD is our G-d, the LORD is One.")
But that is that...
I just finished The Death chapter. Very good recounting of the possible spread of the Bubonic Plague and how it redistributed wealth among the survivors... I still hate the Wilsons, but I have to admire their perseverance. I just can't make myself respect them. I also have a ton of respect for Agnes and her sense of survival too. I am going to wait for you guys to get here and discuss:)
Also, even when we don't have other religions but one, we as people find ways to split that one into other sects, and once again people are ostracized... Makes no sense... A great way (view spoiler)Good look at how the precursors to Protestantism start getting root in the country...
Hailee, I agree with you all the way! And maybe because of all the feelings this chapter provoked, it turned out to be one of the strongest so far!
Choko wrote: "Hailee, I agree with you all the way! And maybe because of all the feelings this chapter provoked, it turned out to be one of the strongest so far!"Absolutely. It may have covered an infuriating issue but because it brought out such strong emotions in me, that it is worthy of it getting the highest rating so far in my opinion

Totally agree, its the fact that so little has changed and we know that everything gets worse and there is no justice that this chapter hits so hard.
Agree, Veronica! That pissed me off too...Which leads me to the next chapter, very short and not too personal...
The Roses, which is weird, because the war between the Roses is barely mentioned, but I think the author is using it as to frame the time period.
Honestly, I am getting kind of tired from the constant villainy of the Wilsons... The author is making a strong statement about nurture overcoming nature. Those young Wilsons are raised with hatreds in their hearts for some of the other families, and with a school of thought about making money and screwing other people over by any means necessary, the nastier the better... As I said, I am hoping that at one point that family takes a tern and become more human, some sort of goodness shows up...
In this chapter I feel (view spoiler)
Finished The Rose...Short chapter, comparatively speaking. It is starting to get annoying that the author keeps sticking to the idea that there is not any significant change in characteristics among family member through the generations. (view spoiler)
Veronica, exactly!!! For both the variations in family lines and the butcher's daughter... Also, the one thing that actually really stuck with me is that when the father of the current King married the French princess, the daughter of The Mad King of France, is when a definite madness started being passed down generationally in the royal line... Very interesting....
The DeathI wrote this in my draft notes but never got around to posting it before I proved or disproved my theory:

Choko wrote: "I just finished The Death chapter. Very good recounting of the possible spread of the Bubonic Plague and how it redistributed wealth among the survivors... The fact that they held this grudge for several hundred years demonstrates their perseverance but yeah nothing much to admire in that family so far.
EDIT: haha I have just read your comments on this chapter Veronica and see you said pretty much the same thing.
Choko wrote: "Veronica, exactly!!! For both the variations in family lines and the butcher's daughter... Also, the one thing that actually really stuck with me is that when the father of the current King marrie..."
Yes to be honest the fate of the butcher's daughter is the only thing that made an impression on me. The rest was all very "in character" for the family ancestry that Rutherfurd has developed.
Hailee, hahaha! That link with the "cheesy" sayings is awesome! The thing about the red Rose in the War of the Roses totally surprised me as well. This is why we read these books though, isn't it, so we learn something new:)
Choko wrote: "Hailee, hahaha! That link with the "cheesy" sayings is awesome! The thing about the red Rose in the War of the Roses totally surprised me as well. Veronica wrote: "I've never heard that chalk and cheese saying. Is it a European thing? I'm in the States."I think since it originated from Wiltshire in the UK its logical to presume it just hasn't travelled as far as the US. Its a very common saying in the UK but I'm not even sure if its used in wider Europe.
Veronica wrote: "Finished Journey From Sarum...Super short chapter and not much going on. We do ..."
(view spoiler)
Journey From Sarum was so short, almost jarringly so, after the more extensive chapters... As you ladies already said, what made most impression was poor Lizzy... My heart broke for such a promising young girl turning into a bitter, hurt woman because of those Wilson-Forest people! My one hope for that family is whatever comes out of William, who took off for London. The rest, I am sad because it seems everything that I found good in the town of Salisbury seems to be changing and not for the better... I will continue reading the next chapter in hopes for something more uplifting...
Hailee wrote: "I think since it originated from Wiltshire in the UK its logical to presume it just hasn't travelled as far as the US. Its a very common saying in the UK but I'm not even sure if its used in wider Europe."What does it mean? I don't recall how or where it was used in the book.
The New World...Talk about the Godfreys and their fall from grace... Wow! I just didn't expect it to go that far...
(view spoiler)
Overall, as much as I disliked most of the folks in the chapter, it was very educational and I liked it quite a lot. :)
Finished The New World. I'm running a little late in the reading schedule.Choko, I share most of your thoughts on this chapter.
(view spoiler)
Choko, reading about the fate of Mary Queen of Scots makes me sad to know that whatever (fictional) Lymond does for her protection will come to naught. :-(
I know! Was going to mention that in the other thread, but it is said to see The Little Queen as such a bright and precocious child with so much hope and to know how things end for her ..
Just finished Ch. The Unrest...This was a more personal chapter, taking on the five Shakley siblings. (view spoiler)
Overall, I really enjoyed this chapter and hope things get better for the Shakleys as we are getting closer to the end... And I want more information about the Masons and the Godfreys...
I too am running a bit behind in the schedule. I'll prioritize this book this week so I can get back on track. The New World

Veronica wrote: "What does it mean? I don't recall how or where it was used in the book."Sorry I completely missed seeing this question till now. The phrase "like chalk and cheese" is just used to refer to two people that are complete opposites or incompatible in some way.
Choko wrote: "The New World...Talk about the Godfreys and their fall from grace... Wow! I just didn't expect it to go that far...
.."
Yes I agree with everything you said, especially the whole fake coat of arms/family history thing, that annoyed me too. I expect British history is full of this kind of thing which makes me sad really
The Unrest I did find it interesting to follow the Shockley's so closely in this chapter.

(view spoiler)[I knew that a lot of surnames normally came about by being named after crafts that people specialised in but it was interesting to see it happening.
I actually had to google the term 'villein.' I thought it was the same as villain at first 😂
Poor Godric. He never really stood a chance. The Middle Ages weren't kind to anyone even slightly different to the 'norm' If only Mary had held out one more day.
This chapter and its focus on the dispute between Stephen and Matilda has really put me in the mood to read When Christ and His Saints Slept. It's been on my TBR for ages since the authors work The Sunne In Splendour is one of my favourite books.
I'm presuming the mizmaze mentioned is supposed to be the Breamore Mizmaze, which is apparently still surrounded by Yew trees:
