What did you think of Kindred, Diane? I thought it was excellent, but a difficult read.

I agree, it was an excellent book. It was very traumatising to read. The author sure was skillful in keeping me in the story.

I want to read Parable of the Sower at some point by her, we should maybe put it on the radar for the second part of the year if you are interested.

You're charging through this one. I've been meaning to try Geraldine Brooks, what was you thoughts?

I would definitely be interested in Parable of the Sower, I enjoy her writing style.
I really really enjoyed Geraldine Brooks, well worth the read. I would have rated Year of Wonders much higher if it wasn't for the bizarre ending. I want to try another of her books and I'm hoping she's more restrained with the outcome.

Wayne Jordaan | 825 comments Thanks Diane. Yes it is, and Mary H Kingsley had me chuckling at the telling of her (mis)adventures.

Here is a short piece on this "intrepid" Victorian. victorianweb.org/history/explorers/1....

"Apart from a week in Paris in 1888 with an old family friend, Mary Kingsley had never been abroad". Wow, talk about leaving your comfort zone. This amazes me, given Mary's Victorian background.

Wayne Jordaan | 825 comments And for all her life she refused to wear a pair of trousers, on account of it not being appropriate apparel for ladies. So up she went Mount Cameroon in hoops and skirts, while the men could not cut it.
