I think one of the following The Motorcycle Diaries: Notes on a Latin American Journey
The Lady and the Monk: Four Seasons in Kyoto
Africaville
Sankofa
this is one I am having a very hard time with. I have a specific sub genre in my head of what an 'adventure story' is and other going back to Alexandre Dumas I can't seem to find anything
Miracle in the Andes is an amazing true-life adventure book that works for this task. It's beautifully written (and the audiobook is great, too!). It's not for the feint of heart, but, my goodness, you will be rewarded for the effort you put into this one. Really life affirming and thought-provoking -- and a page-turner to boot!
I feel something like NK Jemisin's The Fifth Season , Octavia Butler's Parable of the Sower, or Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse could work well here.
Mandie wrote: "I feel something like NK Jemisin's The Fifth Season , Octavia Butler's Parable of the Sower, or Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse could work well here."they definately could, depending on how this genre divide works in your head. For me those are all firmly fantasy or sci fi which I why I am probably re reading The Three Musketeers
maybe I can stretch 'adventure' far enough to read Mycroft and Sherlock, the first was pretty actively paced
I'm thinking Spirit Run: A 6,000-Mile Marathon Through North America's Stolen Land or The Adventure Gap: Changing the Face of the Outdoors
I'm considering reading Huntress or Dragon Pearl, but there are a lot of books that fit this task that I'm interested in.
Some I'm considering - Pym, Firekeeper's Daughter, A Snake Falls to Earth, The Adventure Gap: Changing the Face of the Outdoors, Pet

Oh that is a great suggestion, I read it a few years ago and it definitely qualifies as an adventure tale!
As Long as Grass Grows: The Indigenous Fight for Environmental Justice, from Colonization to Standing RockI can see this book working for this category since it's about environmental justice so that kind of fits within the adventure aspect.
Aru Shah and the End of Time by Roshani Chokshi is on my TBR and seems to fit here. It's a middle grade read, but sometimes I need those to break up some more difficult reading.
I'm going to read The Unlikely Thru-Hiker by Derick Lugo which seems to fit the bill and is nonfiction for those who asked above. The Unlikely Thru-Hiker: An Appalachian Trail Journey
Mandie wrote: "This looks to be a good starting point: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1..."Thank you for this. It made it very easy for me to scan for titles on my TBR already. I've added a bonus goal for myself to read off my TBR whenever possible. Too many good ones languish on that darn list of mine!
Raining Men and Corpses maybe, Zoo City, Tristan Strong Punches a Hole in the Sky, Heroine Complex, Sandry's Book, L.A. Blues
Not sure why this category was so hard for me to choose a book, but I'm going with Sorcerer to the Crown. It was in my TBR so I must have thought I wanted to read it.
I'm reading Firekeeper's Daughter by Angeline Boulley. The protagonist, who is part Ojibwe and part White, goes undercover in her community. I am enjoying the main character and depiction of Ojibwe culture.

I read this a few years ago; it's not an adventure story.
I just read it a couple months ago, but Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno Garcia would be a great one!!
I can't tell if this is meant to be fiction or nonfiction. For now I'm planning to read The Black Veins by Ashia Monet. If it's nonfiction, I'll switch to The Unlikely Thru-Hiker: An Appalachian Trail Journey by Derick Lugo.
Amy wrote: "I read this a few years ago; it's not an adventure story"Oh okay, thanks. It kind of sounded like one.
I'll have to go and find something else.
*****
If anyone has any nonfiction adventure stories that would be great. I think I have several in mind but I want other ideas as well.

I may be doing "Wonderful Adventures of Mrs. Seacole in Many Lands" for this one.

BookRiot says that the point of the reading challenge is "to push yourself to expand your horizons and break out of your comfortable reading bubble." So we all get to choose what our own personal definition of a category is, and take advice as we like to help us make a selection.

I'll look through my book collection. I have a lot of nature stuff that I think could work I just need to see if I have any that are BIPOC.

It was humorous and upbeat. I gave it 5 stars.
I’m a little embarrassed to say I don’t really know how to define an adventure story. You could probably argue there’s some type of adventure in most stories.

Thank you! It's already on my shelf, now I have a great excuse to move it up to my TBR list.
Appreciate the suggestion!
I'm almost finished with Valerie Valdez's Chilling Effect and I think it's a really good fit for this prompt (as long as Book Riot is defining adventure story in the way that I would).
Would Kindred by Octavia Butler work here? It has time travel, which seems like an adventure to me...
Firekeeper's Daughter is SOOOO good! I would also recommend Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin - it's children's but it's a masterpiece and the audiobook is excellent!
Kate wrote: "Would Kindred by Octavia Butler work here? It has time travel, which seems like an adventure to me..."Most of Octavia Butler's books and especially Kindred fall into sci fi but I see why you may want to stretch it into an adventure
Just finished The Dragon Republic. Absolutely incredible and more amazing (and, be warned, brutal) than the first book.
Would Children of Blood and Bone count? I've heard so many good reviews and it was already on my booklist...

If you like comics, this one is more of a zine. I just finished Montana Diary and I'd definitely categorize it as an adventure story.
Sarah wrote: "Firekeeper's Daughter is SOOOO good! I would also recommend Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin - it's children's but it's a masterpiece and the audiobook ..."I read Where the Mountain Meets the Moon for a prompt a year or so ago, and completely concur!
