Lots of fog, protagonists protect small children and animals, apparent alien spaceship turns out to be 'wheels within wheels' from Revelations. Published second half of last century -- '70's?

I know it's by Dean Koontz; I just can't think of the title. Give me a moment . . .Never mind. I was thinking about The Taking, but that wasn't published until 2004.
