Nathan Preedy | 7 comments Hi all,

I have just discovered that another author has used the same royalty free image for a book cover that I have also used on one of mine. Obviously this is fine as it's a royalty free image so neither of us owns it at all, but I wondered how common this sort of situation is. It's certainly not a situation I've come across before.

Nathan Preedy | 7 comments Many thanks for your reply Jamie. I suppose it's one more factor to consider when picking the image for the next one.

Remember that mass produced covers are targeted at the masses. While viewing a catalog at the library a couple of months ago, I came across three different books sporting the exact same cover. So, I guess it would be more unusual not to occasionally come across duplications.

Justin (justinbienvenue) | 2274 comments I've always wondered this and I never saw it until last month when I saw an image on a book that was the same as the image my friend had on her book. The image was slightly different but pretty much the same.

As Jamie said it will be common given that when you use a royalty free image more people are bound to use it. As long as it doesn't upset you then I suppose it's all good. I'd suggest looking into a cover artist for future covers, most don't charge a lot and you have input on what you'd like.

Here's my cover artist that I use, she has good prices and does excellent work,

Sharon (fiona64) It's ridiculously common, actually. It's also one of the reasons I work with an artist to create original pieces for my covers. :-)

Paganalexandria It happens enough that I have a shelf for it. lol It doesn't deter me from reading them, just something I track because it's amusing.

Jim Vuksic | 1227 comments Especially common in the romance genre. After all, there are just so many positions a hot couple can assume.

R.F.G.,

Good point. I always wanted to read that book, but never got around to it. Now, with the early stages of arthritis appearing in some of my joints, I guess it's too late.

R.F.G. Cameron | 443 comments Jim,

I'm 56, a bit broken, have some arthritis, and my youngest child is 15 months old.

Some things are only too late when you're planted under the daisies.

D.C. | 327 comments You can sometimes avoid some of the accidental cover image duplication if use "search google for this image". Not foolproof, but it helps.
