we had a few people interested in Carol a while back - did we decide on a target month for that?(I can do any from April or later...)
Darren wrote: "I'd prefer to avoid a clash with The Alexiad, so how about we say August for Carol?"
Sounds good!
Sara wrote: "I am going to add Carol to the schedule for August. If that changes just let me know."Thanks Sara :o)
I see that quite a few people have been reading the Man Without Qualities, so maybe some of you would be interested: I mean to read Hermann Hesse's literary works, would anyone join me?

Clocktrotter wrote: "I see that quite a few people have been reading the Man Without Qualities, so maybe some of you would be interested: I mean to read Hermann Hesse's literary works, would anyone join me?"I would like to know in what way would we read Hesse. I have most of his books. Are we going to read his poems too? I don't think there is a complete works of Hesse in one binding. Someone please disabuse me of this.
Clocktrotter wrote: "I see that quite a few people have been reading the Man Without Qualities, so maybe some of you would be interested: I mean to read Hermann Hesse's literary works, would anyone join me?"I wouldn't be interested in all of Hesse's works but there are certain novel readings I would enjoy. I would join for one of them probably depending on when it was.
I'm glad to see that you are interested! Luffy wrote: "I don't think there is a complete works of Hesse in one binding. Someone please disabuse me of this."
The complete edition of his work in German counts 20 volumes of 500 pages (including 10 volumes of non-fiction), so I doubt there is.
All in all, Hesse seems to have published 17 novels and novellas, two short story collections and five poetry books - reading them all would be rather ambitious.
I'd say his most relevant works are Demian, Siddharta, der Steppenwolf, Narcissus and Goldmund and the Glass Bead Game. So maybe we could start with these? We could also insert poems in between the novels. Would you remove anything from or add anything to that selection?
Regarding the timeline, when would you want to start reading? And at what rhythm?
I will read them in German (or in French if I struggle too much). I don't know much about the English editions. Does someone know if some translations are better than others?
I'm with Sam: I would be interested in joining for a couple of these books, depending on when you read them. (I've been meaning to read the Glass Bead Game for a while, and it would be nice to do a reread of Siddhartha.) But don't schedule around me. Just as long as I have a way of seeing your schedule, then I can figure out when I can join in.
Clocktrotter wrote: "I'm glad to see that you are interested! Does someone know if some translations are better than others?"
I don't have that knowledge. But I do have all the books you mentioned. For Siddhartha I have the Bernofsky translation. It is the only version I have.
I think we could take it slow and read 100 or 150 pages per week and read this challenge while reading other more intrinsic reads. I await others to chime in.

His novels aren't very long, but they are rather intense. If we read 100 pages per week, we could read two novels per months, but maybe we should give ourselves time from one novel to the other and rather say one book per month?
I will probably read some preparatory books inbetween (for example Goethe's Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship, as Hesse stated that the Glass Bead Game is a direct answer to that book), so I know that I would appreciate the extra time :)
What do you think?
Also, when would you like to start?
@Wobbley, Sam: when would you have time to join in and what books are you most interested in? I'm sure we can take your availabilities in consideration.
One book per month it is for me. I have little to add, and I have never read this author, so I look forward to being guided and informed throughout the reads.
One month to read each book seems like a good pace. I'm interested in joining for the Glass Bead Game and Siddhartha. I'm already doing 2 buddy reads in April, so if you could wait until at least May to tackle those two, then I could join you. Thanks!
Ok, thank you for your input :) I'd suggest the following rhythm, but obviously anyone could start a book earlier or join later on:May - Demian
June - Siddharta
July - der Steppenwolf
August - Narcissus and Goldmund
September - Glass Bead Game
We could also begin in April, as Wobbley doesn't mean to read Demian, but I figured I could use the month of April to do a little preparatory research.
Does that sound good to you?
I hesitate to commit, but I see you guys planning these reads and keep feeling pulled in! I have read Siddhartha and Steppenwolf, and have a copy of The Glass Bead Game (translation: Richard and Clara Winston) that I keep meaning to get to, but don't! Maybe this is the push I need. September would be a good time for me, but please don't plan around me. I will watch for your comments as you read and join in for The Glass Bead Game when the time comes.Looks like you have a lot of good reading ahead of you :)
I would enjoy joining in some of these if you'll have me. I loved Siddhartha, and I liked Narcissus and Goldmund a bit less but still somewhat.I definitely have an interest in reading some of the ones I haven't read yet, like Demian by Hermann Hesse (Bestseller Book) and The Glass Bead Game. I'll join in those if I can. I have a bad habit of over-committing, but I will definitely try. If I like either of them half as much as Siddhartha, it will be time well spent!

This schedule works for me. Thank you for organizing this.
I will join for specific books with Demian being one of them. Clocktrotter, or anyone else interested, I wouldn't mind starting with Peter Camenzind in latter April if you wish and if I don't have to move to a new house. Peter Camenzind is a bildungsroman and was Hesse's first big success. The book is not very important now and isn't widely read but I like reading an author's early work and it is only a couple hundred pages.
Sam wrote: "I will join for specific books with Demian being one of them. It looks interesting, so I just purchased a copy for $1.99! Hope to start it soon :)
Sara wrote: "I will add these books to the schedule as listed and if things change you can let me know."Thanks Sara!
By the way, I think it would be best to make one single thread, does everybody agree?
Sam wrote: "Clocktrotter, or anyone else interested, I wouldn't mind starting with Peter Camenzind in latter April if you wish and if I don't have to move to a new house. "
Sure! Count me in :) I don't know anything about that one, but it ought to be interesting. Hesse is a fascinating author.
@ Sara: could you please add this book to the schedule?
I'm glad to see so many of you are interested!
I have added Peter Camenzind for April and will set up the thread when I set up the April Buddy Reads. I will call it The Herman Hesse Marathon Discussion. :o)
Savita and Carolien, are we still on for Can You Forgive Her? by Anthony Trollope in April? Would anyone else like to join us?
Sara wrote: "Savita and Carolien, are we still on for Can You Forgive Her? by Anthony Trollope in April? Would anyone else like to join us?"I am interested. Not sure I can finish the book in 1 month but will try.
Sara wrote: "Savita and Carolien, are we still on for Can You Forgive Her? by Anthony Trollope in April? Would anyone else like to join us?"Sara , I have already begun the book , I hope you don't mind ? You all will be able to catch up easily since I am a slow reader . I was thinking of putting in comments ( in the concerned thread ) , with spoiler tags , where appropriate.
That is fine, Savita. I hope you are enjoying it and that we can catch you soon. I will not begin until April.
Thanks , Sara ! I have just discovered that this book is not mentioned in the April Buddy Reads schedule , Sara . May I know whether the thread will be available in April only ? Sorry to bother you.
For those reading Around the World in Eighty Days and Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day in April, please note that the group has already read these and there are existing threads. Links have been posted in the Buddy Reads Schedule to the appropriate threads.
