I finished today as I had a long solo drive. Overall I was satisfied with the ending. It was a complicated story and I felt lost a lot - I think this book is probably better to read with eyes, but I already owned the lot on audio. I am glad that I stuck it out though. And I may reread the series some time now that I have gone through it once and maybe will enjoy it more since I will be grounded a bit more in the plot.

(view spoiler)[ It was a shock, Caeden getting captured. Horrible too. I almost cried when Erran gave Caeden the Sever to use on Ishelle, knowing she was already dead and Erran was going to his death. I don’t see how he is getting out of this and what is Asha going to do? (hide spoiler)]

She really thought Tal would have gotten out without Davian’s help? Eww what Grassandrid did to Fessi! I hate him! The goodbyes in Z were heartbreaking! I hope R and N made it.

Cyr is apparently dead already. Daria is gone now. After Gassandrid is taken care of, that leaves Alaric, right? Then Caeden can go in peace? Hmmm. (hide spoiler)]

Ch 48 – (view spoiler)[ This was a surprisingly calm chapter considering what is going on in the world. I liked the added detail of them finding the ring and Caeden refusing to give it to Dav yet. (hide spoiler)]

Finished the book and I have mixed feelings. (view spoiler)[ I love that Davian, Asha and Wirr live! Caeden really redeemed himself in this book, in my opinion. He started making the right decisions and he took responsibility for all his past actions. I really hope Niha finds Asha and Dav now that the boundary is down. She’ll be shocked and so happy to see him alive and can finally give him answers. Assuming she survived 20 years North of the boundary. If only we could get answers from Raelith to know if he survived and how he lived the rest of his life.
There are many unresolved plot points. The entire story of Dezia and Aelric is a big ?. Maybe there was supposed to be a separate book that followed their journey. What happens now? Caeden succeeded, the venerate is no longer in control, kan can’t exist in this world, but there is still fighting. Illin Illan is destroyed and so many lives gone. How will the world adapt? The gifted still exist and there are regions that despise them. I can’t imagine the current situation has improved that. I want more info! (hide spoiler)]

I agree. (view spoiler)[It seems like the book was setting up a new spin off series. So many unanswered questions. It's almost like his main thrust was the redemption of Caeden and once that was established, it was over and done. (hide spoiler)]

Sorry I did not get back - I got sucked into reading Midnight Sun before I had a chance to come back.

I have to say that the ending Epilog was kind of bittersweet.
(view spoiler)[I had already figured out that Caeden was going to go back and shapeshift into Davian to save him, but I had not figured out how he was going to do it. The way he was able to drift around in the rift, was kind of lame, but it made a way to wrap up the story to pull all of the other elements together. I had already suspected that Nihi was potentially Davian's mother. It was clear that Caeden had done something to her or the baby before the torqe would work on her to allow her to change before she was sent back to her own time. I had thought she was going to go way back, like Realith, though. I hope she was still alive when the boundary went down and will find Asha and Davian too. I think the whole wrap up was a little over done, but it did make a final end to the story. Before it got to the end, only real thing that I wanted to know was HOW the kid (I thought he was older than a year) got to Taeris. That Davian was still a baby was a surprise. It seemed like Caeden had lied, but then, he did not know, until after he "died". (hide spoiler)]

It looks like he's writing a new series as his main focus, so who knows if or when the story of Aelric and Dezia will be finished. He's influenced by Rothfuss, so that doesn't bode well for series completion. 🤣 Also, the new series starts with a book longer than the 1st two Licanus books.

I did not go to his website, nor look at his other books. Thanks for the info. Maybe Aelric and Dezia will not have to wait as long as we have been waiting for Rothfuss to finish The Doors of Stone, his third book for his Kingkiller Chronicle series.

That is going to be a thick book. I just wonder if its world building will be as complicated to understand.
