Soc | 3 comments Book was read around 2017-2018. However this book came from a school library, so that complicates things.

In addition to the details here, in the winter forest, the young girl wanders into a town, where there's sort of a stand or stage built in the middle, where a girl with red shoes is compelled to dance endlessly.

Also, on the back cover was an advertisement for additional books by the same author, and there was a book about "orange" or may with orange in the title. Not sure if that helps.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Soc, is this a fantasy novel (which we'll add to the header/ topic title)?

Soc | 3 comments Apologies, yes! It is fantasy. Edited the topic. And checking to see if it is indeed Breadcrumbs. . .

No worries. Here's the Google Books preview of Breadcrumbs by Anne Ursu - Rainbowheart's suggestion:

The bit about red shoes is actually part of a fairy tale called The Red Shoes(I know, shocker).
I don't see how this will help you, but I thought I should mention it in case it did.

Rainbowheart | 28841 comments I hope it's Breadcrumbs! If not, it's definitely a mashup of Hans Christian Andersen.

The A Tale Dark & Grimm series also includes some of Andersen's fairy tales.

Was is possibly a brother/sister pair? If so, then the Dark and Grimm series is probably it. There's a blue cover, a yellow cover, and an orange/red cover.
